Though Death Metal in large respects has been tied to the subculture of Scandinavian music, its roots are often traced back to the eerie swamplands of Florida. Obituary was one of these sunshine state bands who were essential in outlining what form the genre would take.
Members John Tardy (vocals), Allen West (lead guitar), JP Chartier (guitar), Jerome Grable (bass), and Donald Tardy (drums) formed Obituary in Tampa, Florida, US in 1984, initially under the name Executioner. They eventually altered the spelling of their name to Xecutioner to prevent being confused with another band using the same name. Under these monikers they released several demos and recorded two tracks for the “Raging Death” compilation.
The group adopted the name Obituary in 1988 and released their studio debut “Slowly We Rot”. This album was noted for being the group’s only release to feature bass player Daniel Watkins and their only album to be recorded in standard E tuning. Even though tunings pitched a step or two below standard E are considered to be more heavy and dense, this remained their most ominous and daunting release to date.
The group’s 2nd album “Cause of Death” came out on 19 September 1990 and like its predecessor took the construct of thrash metal and tested it to its limits, which often broke into non-musical forms of sound. The pace of their music was in constant flux and the unpredictability of the album caused a tremor of invigoration throughout the metal scene.
On 21 April 1992, Obituary put out their third and best selling album “The End Complete”. The album sold 550,000 copies world wide and climbed to No. 16 on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart. “World Demise” followed and had similar commercial success, reaching No. 17 on the Billboards Heatseekers chart. The group’s 5th album “Back from the Dead” marked their last album before their break up. The group dissolved due to weariness of their hectic tour schedule and saw them all moving on to other projects such as Six Feet Under, Lowbrow, Andrew W.K., and Catastrophic.
Obituary ended their 6 year hiatus in 2003 and released their long awaited return album “Frozen in Time” in 2005. This was the group’s last release with Roadrunner Records. Their next two albums 2007’s “Xecutioner’s Return” and 2009’s “Darkest Day” were released through Candlelight Records as was their 2008 EP “Left to Die”. The group’s proceeding album “Inked in Blood” was self-released on the label Gibtown Music/Relapse Label and was funded through the Kickstarter campaign.
Plus d'infoObituary are a great death metal band to listen to recordings of, but their live performances are just incredible, and if you’re a fan, I can’t stress enough how insane the shows are. From the moment the lights went up and the feedback of the guitars came through the giant amps, they were on fire. As one of the most successful metal bands in the world, their budget allows for every effect imaginable, from crazy costumes, to epic lighting.
They came onstage all dressed in black and started rocking out to Don’t Care. As well as being super talented musicians (the solos were insane, like nothing I’d seen before) they are all great performers. From watching Trevor Peres head band almost lying on the floor with his long thick hair going everywhere, to seeing John Tardy nail every single note whilst throwing himself around the stage, the talent and stamina that the band have was just incredible.
They played a selection of their new, and older material, and kept everyone jumping around like mad for the entirety of the show. When they got us to sing along, John jumped down off of the stage and got as close to the audience as he could, holding up the microphone to people to sing back to him. The atmosphere was electric, and I can’t stress how incredible the band are live, they’re like nothing you’d ever expect.
We got a chance to see Obituary when they were in Charlotte NC. It was my first time seeing them and it was an awesome show! I've been very fortunate over the years my best friend toured with several different Death Metal bands and there was also club courtesy for the Club I worked at; so I was able to get in to see a lot of shows. This was the first one in a long time that I had to have tickets for and I think that made it more exciting! These guys put on a fantastic show! The best part of it for me was that they were having a great time bending on stage! I loved seeing them laughing and having fun. We had a chance to talk to John, the lead singer, after the show and he seemed so down to earth, I really like seeing that when I get time to chat with these guys. It makes it all seem that much more worth it for me. :)
A singular band Obituary realize a big show with an accurate sound and with great technique.
I'm a big fan of this band since 1990's. John Tardy has a fucker vocals equal to the studio. Monstrous performance of all band! Perfect setlist! (Missed "the end complete" only)
I really thank especially the great TREVOR respect and consideration with fans after the show. Many are musicians, he demonstrated far beyond that, as a musician and as a person. A lesson for all of us in metal scenery!

Third time I've seen these guys and every time they crush it. They are an incredibly tight band live and all of their songs translate very well. I might even say that they get better every time I see them. Having been around for over 30 years, they have plenty of great songs to choose from and unfortunately it's impossible to play them all. Even if you don't consider yourself a fan, go see them if you want to bang your head real hard.
Second time I've seen them; this time the band seemed much tighter. A high point for me was when they played Circle of Tyrants by Celtic Frost. Unfortunately the bass player was not there as he had just experienced a family tragedy. But the band played on with very high energy. Drummer was excellent as usual. Fantastic show.

Dont know many of the songs either of these bands but they both were very good If you get the chance see this tour This show needs to be experienced for a proper review Words cant describe how good this was
No i didn't enjoy the show, since they all cancelled. I'm pissed!!!! I waited 27 years to see Obituary again and was my son's first time seeing Obituary or would have been. I expect a concert soon or I'm done with them.
Ass kicking- pure hard core old Skool metal. Simply the best. No pussy ass love songs. All metal bands should play with the same power as this band does. This is a show I would see again when they come back to Chicago.
Awesome, There are incredible live. The set list was perfect and the new album is wonderful. One of the best Death Metal Band! They mix old and new songs in the show, the performance was perfect.
They done storming set for 30 minutes and left the best to last with Slowly We Rot from their debut album...looking forward to seeing them again in london on saturday...rating 4/5
