Biographie

  • Solange is a singer/ songwriter hailing from Houston, Texas, US who was born on June 24th, 1986. Since her debut, she has released two studio albums along with one EP and has worked with everyone from Lil' Wayne and Chromeo to The Lonely Island and Boards Of Canada.

It's safe to say that Matthew and Tina Knowles bore musical children. While the world knows exactly who Beyoncé is, her little sister Solange has been also been performing from around a similar age, and is just as deserving of anyone's attention. Solange began singing at around the same time she started talking, and was performing at state fairs by the time she was five years old. From the age of nine, Solange was more interested in writing her own songs than performing anyone else's, but then her older sister shot to fame as a member of the girl group Destiny's Child, and Solange began touring with them as a backup dancer. Over the next couple of years, Solange proved herself as a formidable singer and performer, and by the age of 16, her father had secured her a record deal thanks to his recording company, Music World Entertainment.

She began as an extended member of Destiny's Child, singing lead vocals on a track on the band's Christmas album “8 Days Of Christmas”. However, she soon began to prove herself away from her sister, writing a couple of the tracks on Kelly Rowland's solo album “Simply Deep” and in January 2003, releasing her debut solo album “Solo Star”. Being 14 years old, the album was regarded as coming a little bit too soon for Solange, but still showed more than enough promise to justify it. After the album's release, she took a break from music to focus on acting, and returned with 2008's far better received “Sol-Angel and The Hadley St. Dreams”. The album sold over 100'000 copies in four months, and Solange went on her first extensive world tour to promote it.

Ever since then, Solange has remained a fascinating and unpredictable artist, one day cutting singles entitled “F*ck The Industry”, the next appearing on the children's TV show “Yo Gabba Gabba!”. While she might never have the commercial success of her older sister, she'll still release material that can rival the best of her sibling for quality and for sheer unpredictability. For that, she comes highly recommended.

  • Solange

Seeing Solange Knowles in concert is like spending a fun night out at a disco party. As an independent artist having sculpted a pathway for herself through style, her musical content is more mature and organic. Her 2013 True Tour encompassed everything she’s transitioned into -- her true authentic self. Her shows have a retro vibe with a modern twist and this is what concertgoers were expecting.

At $22.00, the tickets were sold out. During her 2013 True Tour in Atlanta, GA, Solange was booked for a show at The Masquerade in the intimate upstairs “Heaven” venue room. In support of her album, she played all 7 songs from her True EP, opening with “Some Things Never Seem To Fucking Work.” Almost midway thought the show, she performed a rendition of Selena’s “I Could Fall In Love.” That particular song was a bit chilling but had everyone singing along. Throughout the night Solange managed to maneuver closer to the audience and encourage crowd participation. Solange danced the night away during every cut. During the 2nd half of the show she performed songs from her Sol-Angel and The Hadley St. Dreams album including “T.O.N.Y.,” “Sandcastle Disco,” and “Cosmic Journey.” Before going into “Crush,” which was featured on her debut album Solo Star, she mentioned that the particular album was made during her “figuring it out” stage. “Losing You” was the epic part of the night when she asked friend Janelle Monae and opening act Roman GianArthur to join her on stage for a dance off.

The True Tour experience felt like a family function. The night was filled with r&b, soul and psychedelic fun. All in favor of the new wave indie movement were in attendance to jump aboard Solange Knowles’ soul train.

  • Solange has made a name for herself, and it isn't just for being Beyonce's younger sister or attacking Jay-Z in a lift either. She has her own style of music, melding indie, hip-hop and R&B, and it holds it's own. I like her style - she has some of the best outfits, equally at home in the style pages as on on stage. She's clearly different but in a good way. That's what makes her unique and she stands out in the music industry.

Her sounds are vibrant and mellow but a little upbeat too. It reminds me of slowed down reggae music at times. On stage, she’s a force to be dealt with, and looks fabulous as she dances in high high heels. I wish I could get the chance to see more of her - she doesn't seem to come to my state that often. Still, I can remember the time that I did get to see her and relive the memories. She will entertain you and keep the songs coming - from the soulful and rhythmic “Losing you” (that film clip is fantastic BTW) to her funky R&B cover of Dirty Projectors’ “Stillness is the Move”, where she hits the most diva-like of high notes. See her if you get the chance - her shows sell out quick!

  • Ethereal, hopeful, humble, powerful... just absolute ART. The show was focused on everyone, a celebration of culture, love, identities, and struggle. I love that she made it more about the group on stage as a whole than just her- Tons of stage presence nonetheless. Beautiful band, beautiful backup singers. The lighting was amazing and the stage was so well done and simple. Solange holds her own and I cannot wait to see her when she comes back. You can tell she was feeling it when she got down on the left side of the stage and started singing to us, beautiful moment that reminds me why I love going to live shows/concerts. Flying Lotus was an absolute trip as well. I wish she would've brought Kelela out on this date... Scales is such a beautiful song and I'd of loved to see it live with them two.
