Biographie

  • Sheppard are an indie pop band hailing from Brisbane, Australia who formed in 2009. Since debuting in 2012 they have become one of the biggest names in Australian indie rock, with several ARIA music awards to their name and a five times platinum single with their track “Geronimo”.

The band was formed by Amy and George Sheppard, siblings who both act as the bands lead singer. Back in 2009, Amy had been confronted with a school music assignment whose deadline seemed to rise from out of nowhere and the only person around to help her out with it was her brother, who was already musically gifted, luckily enough. The duo recorded a track together with George singing lead and playing the piano and Amy singing backup vocals, perhaps understandably, they had a massive amount of chemistry and decided to start writing and performing live together as a duo.

By 2012, they had formed a full six piece band, adding a third songwriter in the form of Jay Bovino on rhythm guitar, their younger sister Emma Sheppard on bass guitar, Michael Butler on lead guitar and Jared Tredly on the drums. The Sheppard parents also got involved too, their dad taking up management of the band and their mother tour managing them, they also set up their own record label in the form of Empire Of Song, with whom they still release their records in their native Australia. By August they had released their self-titled debut E.P, and with that one release they generated enough buzz to play festivals in places as far-flung as London and the United States.

It was also a hit back home, hitting number 18 on the ARIA singles chart and “Let Me Down Easy”, its first track, was nominated for the band’s first ARIA award for best independent release of the year in 2013, where they both performed and presented an award at the ceremony. If the band were any hotter at that point in time they would have been on fire, as they were still getting glowing critical notices and making waves all over the world, playing New York’s CMJ Music Marathon with only their debut E.P and its singles to their name. The band wisely decided to strike while the iron was hot, and in February of the following year, they released their breakthrough hit “Geronimo”.

If the band hadn’t been made yet for whatever reason, “Geronimo” made them for sure. It spent three weeks at number one in the Australian singles chart, and was a top five hit in Austria, Poland, Germany, New Zealand and Italy. With that song, the band managed to score a record contract with Decca for the UK release of their debut album and ever since the release of “Bomb’s Away”, the band have made themselves right at home at the top of the Australian music scene. They’re set to support the might Meghan Trainor at the time of writing and if anyone looks set for world domination, it’s absolutely them. They’re one to watch, and they come highly recommended.

  • SHEPPARD

I just recently got into Sheppard. Of course I heard the 'Geronimo' weeks ago, but you can do only so much with one song ;). A few weeks ago nevertheless I got the Album through a friend and within 4 weeks they reached my top 4 in my last.fm listening charts. I was kinda surprised by that, but maybe because it's such a catchy and fun album and the weather outside is cold and dull it was a nice change to listen to something fun :) So my friend and I got tickets for the concerts also only a few weeks ago, because they just recently announced the concert, unfortunately I had to decide between two concerts on the same day, but I decided for Sheppard, because I needed some well deserved fun! So we went on Monday the 17th of November to the little Bang Bang Club, which was crowded like hell, my oh my and pretty hot too. The venue was nicely made because it had different highs which made it possible to see lets say that. Of course there is always that one big guy in front of you! The support was pretty nice and from Canada which made me smile. Sheppard started around 9pm, with what I would say was a kinda traditional Australian song, at least it sound like that for me. They played a pretty cool set and except for 2 songs of their own songs I knew everyone almost by heart, which makes a concert perfect because you feel connected to an artist :D. They played two covers one was 'Rude' by Magic, which was pretty fun, the other one I don't really remember didn't know that one. Best song for sure during the concert was 'let me down easy', George wanted to tell the crowd how the chorus goes and some random older dude just sang it from the hard and they all seemed pretty impressed and we all sang the song together. Awesome stuff happening there :D. Biggest song of the night during the normal stage time was for sure of course 'Geronimo', this song everyone knew by heart. So so fun. They played one cover as a encore and left. BUT here comes the biggest happening of the night, while most people left already, I told my friend "there can always be more, and I really would have liked to hear 'the best is yet to come'. While I was saying that we saw mommy sheppard ;) funny isn't it going backstage and telling by hand gesture that she will get them back on stage. So it took a little while but they came back for a second encore ( still makes me having chills ;)) So went like 3rd row and George asked if we had some preferred song we wanted them to sing, so I went screaming 'the best is yet to come, the best is yet to come'. He said well 'the best is yet to come it is' and apologized if they would mess up, we shouldn't be mad. How could we :D They played the song for just a few left over fans, who didn't go right away and there it was, he even smiled a little at me while he was singing <3 <3 <3. Still makes me kinda giddy, when I thing about it. After that they finally said 'we have nothing more to sing, thanks a lot, we had a lot of fun'. SO DID WE!! Making it a pretty perfect night and definitely we will go again, when they come back to Berlin next spring, at least that's what they said. Hope next time it will be a bit bigger club and we will be a bit more in the front. So yeah, not just the album convinced me but also the 3 Sheppard siblings on stage, they are just fun and so kind and happy about there success, which makes them so sympathetic. Wouldn't change that night in any other way. Thanks for making moments like this happen and making me giddy for weeks or months to come and enjoy what music can make us feel <3. Sorry for any typos or weird sounding sentences, it's because of the non native speaking skills and the still happy me :D

  • With recent single Geronimo assaulting the airwaves as the break out single for the band, Sheppard open the show with Hold my tongue a drum heavy track that is rather bouncy and light hearted to get the crowd moving. Followed up by tracks from the album Smile, Let me down easy, Find Someone, The best is yet to come. Each song following onto the next with relative ease and not too many memorable moments.

With her mermaid-esque aqua hair, the gorgeous Amy Sheppard is easy to watch and a natural on stage. She is captivating in her knitted see-through top and ability to use the entire stage. Amy is gorgeous and passionate with a lot of energy to spare. She glides across the stage using every possible corner, aqua hair mesmerising. Waving to audience members and taking pleasure in performing Amy is a fledgling performer with the ability to hold the show on her own.

The rest of the band seem a little lost on stage and bassist Emma seems rather bored at times and restless, hardly cracking a smile. They lack the ability to work together as a whole and could possibly work on stage presence a little more to make the show gel better. At times this disconnection is distracting from the performance.

George Sheppard makes attempts to be witty, but is not engaging and at times comes across a little arrogant; giving the impression that the band deserve to be there on stage, rather than a little humility that other artists present. There is little interaction and he lacks the ability to hold and really captivate a crowd. He feels the need to draw attention to the bands recent slew of ARIA nominations, a gesture that is unnecessary especially when he disrespects Chet Faker; it seems like an attempt at humour but comes out rude and brattish.

Mostly the songs are easy listening and fun, Sheppard are not really breaking new ground with the music they present. The performance seems rushed at times and not well thought out. What it really lacks is passion fire and personal connection to most of the songs; instead at times it is bland and mediocre. There is little introduction to the songs and when there is it is rushed, feeling like the band are on a time constraint. Amy is the highlight of the show, she is a darling to watch and saves the show from utter blandness. With a little more polish Amy will eventually make an excellent performer and it will be interesting to watch her grow as an artist. Closing the show with the smash hit Geronimo the song on everyone's wish list Sheppard leave the crowd amped up and dancing. To say the least the performance has flowed with relative lack- lustre delivery and was not so memorable. The stand out moment really being when an George invites a severely intoxicated fan on stage for a round of hugs from the band which has the crowd laughing as the girl stumbles blindly around the stage in a drunken state.

Sometimes a song may capture the public on the airwaves, but is it really enough to produce an entire 60 minute show that will have people returning for more? Not this night.

  • Sheppard are a 6-piece indie pop band hailing from Brisbane, Australia. They formed in 2011 and have been since expanding their line-up, ending up with their current six members including siblings Amy, George and Jay. They originally released their material through their own label, named Empire of Song, but recently became the first band in Australia to sign to Decca records. Though they still release their music under Empire of Song, their recent involvement with Decca is definitely illustrative of the success that they have earned. In early 2014, they became the first independent band in years to reach number one on the Aria Charts - their platinum single, Geronimo, remained at the top for 3 weeks. They have matched their record success with a number of tours by touring with pop superstars Owl City and Jason Mraz.

Given the recent hype around this band, you certainly expect big things. I am glad to say that they deliver on stage. They play with 5 members at the front of the stage, including two guitarists, a bassit, drummer and keyboardist all contributing to vocals and harmonies. They play with a lot of energy and impressive talent. They open with ‘Hold My Tongue’ and play a wide range of songs from their collection and close with the song that the crowd has been waiting for – of course, Geronimo. The crowd goes whilst for this platinum single but this is not say that Sheppard are simply one-hit wonders – their full set clearly shows this. They play an encore of two songs including a MAGIC! cover, in true indie pop style, ending the night on a true high note. Their cohesion on stage is incredible for a 6 piece band and they are all clearly talented musicians. Sheppard are indie pop wonders who deserve every bit of success they receive. They deserve to be a household name.

  • I had an amazing night wih my friend at the sheppard concert! First the band "the Brahms" played, which was an awsome experience. They played their hit song "Golden", which I'm still singing in my head after the concert. During their performance they threw their drummer threw his sticks into the audience, and I catched one! It was a lovely memory of the night.

After the Brahms, Sheppard finnaly came on stage. We waited two hours to get in the front, which was awesome being that close to Sheppard! They started off with Halfway through hell, which was really energetic. They were really energetic throughout the whole concert. This was pretty astonishing as it was really warm that day. They had a lot of interaction with the audience, as they made jokes, took selfies and shaked hands with some of their fans. When they announced they had only 2 songs left, George Sheppard decided on stage, to do a slow ballet with Amy and George singing. After that they had two songs left. The last one was Geronimo. It was a great ending of the concert and the audience went wild!

After the concert Amy, George and Emma Sheppard came down to a table to sign t-shirts and posters. They were really surprised by the people waiting for an autograph, and were friendly enough to take selfies and have a little conversation :)

Overall I had the best night with my friend. It amazed me how good they were live, as it is usually the opposite with some bands.

If you are considering to go to Sheppard, please do, don't hesisate any longer! They are amazing!

  • It was a fantastic show, I love the music and the energy of Sheppard and the venue and concert goers enhanced that. Being an all age event it was an early finish to the night which wasn’t a bad thing considering it was Sunday night. Also being an all age event it limited the consumption of alcohol and excluded drinking in the concert room. It was a grest night

  • They were so incredibly amazing. The music was absolutely fantastic and they were entertaining to watch, which is what you would hope for in an opening act. I can't wait to see them again; I'm going to be stalking announcements for any news of them coming back.
