• Delta Spirit

  SO here it is, my two cents on the magic that is Delta Spirit, and the reasons why their show on June 3rd pretty much changed the game.

  So the stage was dimly lit with a plethora of tiki torches which gave it a very intimate and inviting feel. As Ellen and I paraded up the stairs and into the Constellation room we heard that familiar introduction to Strange Vine, which is my personal favorite jam on Ode to Sunshine. SO yeah, awesome way to kick off what will end up being one of the best shows I've ever seen. So as you know, the lineup said "Delta Spirit and Friends"... they brought some friends alright. Matt Costa came out, Sameer Gadhia, lead singer of Young the Giant, came out and quite a few others that I didn't note the names of; they were more so personal friends of the band, but they were awesome nonetheless.

  Vasquez was seriously on fire last night. There was a lot of dialogue in between songs that made the room fill with laughter; I had no idea the dude was so damn funny. Every girl was pretty much drooling over him. He was jumping off walls- his energy was indescribable. He'd go from cracking jokes and laughing at himself to putting his serious face on, and then the tiki torches would go from vibrant to almost unlit, and he would then sit down with his guitar, hang his hat, and sing to the crowd with SO much passion, it 'd make a grown man cry. Another very cool thing about this show- I expected mostly Into the Wide songs.. but they sang EVERYTHING. They even covered that famous and likable Violent Femmes song Add it Up... "How can I get... just one kiss..." yea, you know it.

  One of my favorite parts was the second to last song when the band and all the special guests came back out to the stage and sang Rod Stewart's I wish That I Knew What I Know Now. You've never seen a bunch of dudes have so much fun on stage. Vasquez was all over the place in the crowd on that one, you had no idea where he was or where his voice was coming from, but everyone else made the stage impossible to look away from. And of course.. as if I wasn't stoked enough on what I had just experienced... They ended the night with People, Turn Around.. my other favorite jam on Ode to Sunshine. It was one of the most incredible live shows I have ever experienced, and I've been to a lot of shows, man. If people weren't already in love with Delta Spirit before that show, well they fucking are now.

• The words ‘Delta’ and ‘Spirit’ both seem to be popular words to include in the name of your bands, especially on the evidence of the last decade or so, so it’s important not to confuse Delta Spirit with the likes of The Duke Spirit or any band related to the delta blues sound; in fairness to the San Diego outfit, that shouldn’t be too difficult, because they’ve managed to carve out a sound that both achieves widespread commercial appeal and is pretty singular, too, pretty difficult to mistake for anybody else; they intelligently blend elements of Americana and soul with an otherwise straightforward indie rock palette, to often stirring effect. Live, too, they’re an intense proposition, with high-profile festival slots in the U.S. at the likes of Coachella and Lollapalooza testament to the unifying nature of their anthemic sound, which can flit between balladry and aggressive rock and roll at a moments notice; it’s that dichotomy, too, which has afforded them a following here in the UK, and they’ve made their over here several times accordingly. Their most recent trip, back in 2010, saw them pack out intimate rooms with support from Dillinja; with a new album, Into the Wide, lined up for September, expect further dates sooner than later.

• Californian indie rock outfit Delta Spirit formed in 2005 and as they approach their ten year anniversary the group appears to be stronger than ever. As they step out onto the stage to the sound of deafening cheers, there is a great little interaction between the friends which is a mixture of bemusement, amazement and gratitude. It is pretty clear to everybody present that these boys feel incredibly privileged to be able to travel the world as a group sharing their music with a great fanbase.

  To thank the crowds for their ongoing support, the group treats them to one of the most energetic Delta Spirit shows to date. There is not one single moment when every member is not fully invested in the music and the performance. They rip into the guitars, batter the drums and practically scream back the lyrics during 'Tear It Up' and 'Empty House' in order to enthuse the masses. It works well and by the end of this exhausting set, the whole crowd has their hands raised high as they cheer on the dizzying instrumentals of 'White Table' before it all crashes to the ground in an instant.

• Amazing! Great energy. Great artists that they had playing with them. Just an amazing show that I didn't want to end. It's no surprise that tonight's show is sold out. Definitely want to see these guys again and again.
