Biografía

  • Hailing from Seattle, Washington, USA, Damien Jurado is an indie rock singer/songwriter who made his debut in 1995. He is known for his incredibly prolific output, releasing 13 studio albums and 14 EP’s with eight different record labels.

The D.I.Y movement in punk rock gave birth to many great things that weren’t powered by ferocious power chords and throat crushing screams. Most of the movement’s ideology could be just as easily applied to any struggling singer songwriter as well, and in Damien Jurado, it had found an artist more willing to commit than most.

Jurado started out releasing cassette tapes on his own label Casa Recordings, this managed to get him a cult following in his native Seattle and the attention of Sunny Day Real Estate frontman Jeremy Enigk.

Soon after they met, Enigk bought Jurado to the attention of legendary alternative label Sub Pop who would go on to release his first four albums, starting with 1997’s “Water Ave S”

Jurado would stay with Sup Pop for five years, releasing 1999’s “Rehearsals For Departure”, 2000’s “Ghost Of David” and 2002’s “I Break Chairs” in the interim.

These ran the gamut from the upbeat rockisms of “I Break Chairs” to the abject desolation of “Ghost of David” and earned him an even bigger cult following around the globe.

However, in 2003 he signed to Indiana’s very own Secretly Canadian, where he remains to this day. The truth of the matter is that Damien Jurado is going to remain a cult concern for the rest of his days, just as most artists as outrageously talented as he is will do.

However, it seems as though that’s exactly what Jurado wants to be, and any music fan worth their salt should want to be there as well.

  • Damien Jurado

A few months back I was at a show with my partner. The band was popular in the 90s and was doing a sort of revival show. The crowd reflected this - mostly lifers who knew the words, the chords and the stories of the band. The evening was wonderful, but something meaningful was missing. I turned to my partner and told her, "I need to see a concert of an artist that is making new music now."

Damien Jurado's show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg last night satisfied that need. Jurado is making new music now. He’s even doing so at his own peril – shifting away from the much beloved solidly indie-folk music that won him a not so unsubstantial group of lifer fans and even some mainstream attention. His words last night described the need for the shift succinctly when he commented on how much he enjoyed working with the band The Heavy Light, “I didn’t want to be just that guy who sings all those sad songs.”

Instead, last night’s show featured an artist and a band with a deep versatility. Jurado shifted tempo and sound at a whim – alternately blowing the doors off the venue while inviting the audience into some return to the 60s cosmic adventure. Mostly, the music exploded off the stage in a way that moved quickly past the subtleties presented on the studio recorded album. In particular, the drumming and percussion expressed a sort of jazz-inspired brilliance that was totally in-sync, a musical cosmic mind meld, with the direction Jurado was pursuing on each song.

The show reached its high point near the close as the sedentary Jurado emerged from his stool, cast aside his acoustic guitar and whirled into bizarre bodily gyrations. The Heavy Light filled the open musical space with extended solos that advertised the muscle each brought to the table. When Jurado finally ascended to the top of his stool shaking furiously, it was unclear whether this show would end on a musical high or some strange unexplainable tragedy as the stool gave way and the lead musician was rushed away with critical injuries. Thankfully only the musical high prevailed.

All this tumult led back to a critical musical question during the encore. Jurado sauntered out solo. After a witty story about his first tragic trip to NYC 20 years ago, he slid into a song. One musician. With a guitar. With a beautiful, powerful and soulful voice. And there it was. Jurado is simply an absolutely brilliant indie-folk musician. The best at his craft at bringing emotions to the surface, speaking to them and then tucking them away. His new electric music is wonderful – it has an experimental excitement that was admirable to watch develop and to listen to. However, it moves away from sheer brilliance. And perhaps this shift is a necessary one, if only for a moment, for the restoration of a creative soul.

As a fan of “making new music now,” I hold out hope for a grand Jurado synthesis. Some creative combination of the raw power of the last three albums with the deep roots the singer-songwriter has laid in Indie-folk. If nothing else, it will be a joy to see how this wonderfully talented musician continues to figure out how to straddle this line. Thank you Damien Jurado for bringing us all along for the ride.

  • Some might say 11 albums is overkill—I just call it dedication. And when you have an infinite amount of talent like Damien Jurado does, why not keep on sharing it?

I first fell in love with Damien when I stumbled upon his music on Heather Browne’s blog “I am Fuel, You are Friends,” her review startling me with the amount of praise it laid upon the artist. I knew that if Heather, who I consider to be a very credible source, was so ardently captivated by his music, I would be, too. After watching his haunting, choral version of “Metallic Cloud” (he literally had a choir behind him!), I knew he was someone I had to see live. Jurado’s fans are cult-like in their adoration of the musician, and it adds an incredible amount of positive tension and charged excitement to his shows. His voice lays somewhere between James Taylor, Bob Dylan, and Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek, and it makes his shows feel nostalgic for a place and time in the very recent past. His shows strike me as wholly classic, and I always feel closely connected to the crowd when I’m watching him perform.

Damien has certainly come a long way since his first album “Holding His Breath,” but he has maintained an unmatched sincerity that keeps him unique and relevant, and it is an absolute joy to hear him perform live.

  • Washington singer/songwriter Damien Jurado is an esteemed performer on the indie folk circuit. Most artists work their whole careers to be able to captivate a venue in the way Damien can. Pairing sensitive lyrical subject and a technically sublime guitar playing Jurado has the whole room holding their breath during small acoustic instrumentals intermingled in his tracks.

He is also a confident speaker so between songs he has the audience engaged by stories of his past travels and performances, telling them about technical mishaps and tiny venues has the audience chuckling along with the musician. When he returns to the acoustic there is a feeling of serenity and calm in the venue as Damien has achieved a solid connection with the fans. He has a great free spirited vibe to his playing and you get the idea he may have chosen a setlist before the show but he could stray from this at any time should the mood take him. Fortunately he makes space for fan favourites including 'Beacon Hill' and 'Silver Katherine' which receive huge applause before he leaves the stage contended.

  • As always, his serious and thoughtful performance was exactly on the mark. He even took a few minutes to share how a year ago, he was so down that he almost didn’t make it through some dark times. He lost track of his life for months. This just came up as someone yelled something at him during the show. This often happens. He’ll stop and chat. Mid-song, even. He often has a dialogue with the audience that’s heartfelt and vulnerable. I don’t know what darkness plagues him but what he produces in lyrics and melody is as soulful and powerful as any lyricist I’ve ever known. He was born from the Seattle scene and knew the giants of that era in their infancy. I’ve heard it said that he’s actually greatful that brand of fame never came his way as he doesn’t know how well he’d have handled it. He tells stories of sadness and longing. Even though I’m a relatively happy and content person, they are all relatable on many levels because of his genius. He has a real gift and I never miss a show.

  • Terrible. Not sure what he's doing with this band. They don't add anything to his songs. I think he's just taking them along with him to stop him being lonely on tour...

Things got awkward after a few songs where there wasn't a great reaction and he went off stage with a 'broken string'. Came back on with a piece of paper (presumably with some old song lyrics on it) and asked his band to leave the stage.

That got the crowd going a bit and then when the band came back on, he introduced them and for some reason the atmosphere changed and the crowd Were now into the band. It wasn't an improvement though and at times I found my mind wandering, wondering where it all went wrong.

On the rare moments when he played on his own, it was great but I wont be going to see Damien Jurado (and friends)again any time soon.

  • Sombre and raw show from Damien, enjoyed it even though it was him on his own. The venue was a nice setting (St Paul's church) but they hadn't turned down the lights and got the atmosphere right till the encore - which really kept you from completely immersing in the music. It was also constantly interrupted by sirens from outside and the sounds from the bar in the back (or people knocking over bottles). I'd definitely go watch Damien again, but not in this venue.

  • Great show as always by Damien Jurado. While his shows are not 'flashy' or 'high energy' he has a way of captivating the audience in to complete silence. I have seen him several times, and I always enjoy the way he make everyone feel like they are just hanging out in a friends living room listening to music! This was my first time at The Old Church venue and I absolutely loved it. Acoustics are great, atmosphere is 'heavenly.'

  • Incredible singer songwriter! Haunting vox,at times reminiscent of Neil Young, with songs as heartfelt and original as Glen Hansard. Surprisingly witty too.

I downloaded "caught in the trees" from 2008 after "shazamming" the song called Sheets about two years ago and was pleasantly surprised to find that he Damien was even better live, without the use of a back up band.

Keep an eye on this guy, he's definitely worth the look.

  • I'm a huge Damien Jurado fan and he did not disappoint, working through a stack of songs (literally, having walked on clutching several songbooks) old & new. It was a pleasure seeing him in such a intimate venue.

The venue itself was fantastic, great sound! The audience too were very attentive, you could have heard a pin drop. All in all a great show.

  • Damien loves Velour and Velour loves Damien. He delivers honest, solemn sustenance for the soul. This was his last solo set for a "long time" as he will begin touring in support of his new album. He admitted being relieved at not having to sing "sheets" as he hates performing it, even though people love it. Which says a lot about Damien.
