Biografía

  • B.J. Thomas (born August 7, 1942) is a Grammy-winning American country, pop and Christian musician, hailing from Houston, Texas, U.S.

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Thomas’ earliest musical excursions came singing in his local church choir and performing with the group The Triumphs. After competing in a number of battle of the bands, largely against Roy Head and The Traits, the singer decided to go solo and recorded a cover of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”. Produced by Huey P. Meaux and issued on Scepter Records in 1966, the single became a surprise hit and peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. B.J. Thomas’ subsequent hit single came two years later with a cover of “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head”, followed by “Everybody’s Out of Town”, “No Love at All” and “Rock and Roll Lullaby”. These releases represented the musician’s period of rock and roll influences, however with the collapse of Scepter Records, Thomas reinvented himself as a country-pop singer on ABC Records at the start of the '70s.

The single “(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song” established the singer’s new musical sensibilities and rose to the top of the Billboard 200 in 1975. Throughout the end of the ‘70s and into the ‘80s Thomas continued to find chart success with the singles “Don’t Worry Baby” in 1977, “Everybody Loves a Rain Song” in 1978, and the No. 1 singles “Whatever Happened to Old Fashioned Love” in ’83 and “New Looks from an Old Lover” in ’84. This was Thomas’ most success country-pop period, however he simultaneously managed to record a series of hit gospel records including “Midnight Minute”, which spawned the single “As Long As We Got Each Other” in 1988.

Despite failing to achieve the same chart success as his previous releases, B.J. Thomas continued to tour well into the ‘80s and ‘90s and release new material to his adoring fans. The 2000s brought a series of Christian and Christmas albums for the singer showcasing the five-times Grammy-winning performer’s composition and songwriting prowess. After releasing “The Living Room Sessions” in 2013, featuring guest appearances from Lyle Lovett and Vince Gill, Thomas was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2014.

  • B.J. Thomas

Best known for recording Burt Bacharach's infamous song 'Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head' Billy Joe Thomas has enjoyed a career that has spanned over four decades. The Oklahoma singer/songwriter is now into his 70s and although his touring commitments have become a lot less gruelling than during his heyday, he still seems to find real enjoyment in taking to the stage and greeting the fans.

His live show is a pure celebration of timeless country and pop music lead by a true American institution. As he stands front of stage and beams out at the crowd, you really can't see him taking a retirement anytime soon. Although the music is not particularly dynamic, it is still endearing and holds an indescribable charm. As you see numerous generations enjoying the songs together, you understand the importance of the likes of 'Hooked On a Feeling' and 'I Just Can't Help Believing'. With an expert band supporting him Thomas shows confidence with upbeat covers including 'Get Ready' by The Temptations and '(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher' by Jackie Wilson. Undoubtedly he is one of the most passionate musicians working and it is a joy to see.

  • Music is absolutely ageless, and that goes for both the appreciation and for making music. What I’m getting at is that Billy Joe “B.J” Thomas may have had his career start in the early 60s but he is very much continuing to perform and give his fans what they are looking for from him. Having had his career span for such a long time, the well-respected singer draws a great crowd. People of all ages gather to listen to songs that they know all the words to, because the parents would sing them to their kids.

In a fairly full venue, every takes their seat, and when the MC announces BJ Thomas the band immediately starts to play. Thomas has such a classic voice, an absolutely timeless classiness that everyone has an appreciation for. He is extremely personable, and speaks to the audience in between songs, as the band tunes up for the next song. Everyone in the crowd knows at least one of his songs by heart, so at any one point there is an almost choir like effect coming from the audience. He closes out his show with “Raindrops Keeps Falling In My Head” which turns into a sing-a-long and ends with a well deserved standing ovation.
