Tesseract are a progressive metal band from Milton Keynes, England who formed in 2007. Known for their intricate, technical music and powerful live shows, Tesseract began as guitarist Acle Kahney’s solo project in 2003, and have since become one of the most respected bands in the Djent scene.
By and large, I think it’s safe to say that heavy metal bands who take heavy metal seriously have missed the whole point of the genre by a country mile. Ronnie James Dio didn’t pose with a sword and shield singing about killing dragons for new metal bands to dress entirely in black and do nothing but grimace for entire concerts, after all! Heavy metal is an inherently ridiculous genre, what else can one say about a genre that began with bored geeks writing songs about the devil and/or their Dungeons and Dragons campaigns?
It takes a very special band to be able to pull off serious metal and in the form of Tesseract; we have a group whose music could make them stand alongside System Of A Down, Faith No More and Behemoth as heavy bands you don’t laugh at or even with. The band began with its guitarist Alec “Acle” Kahney, who wanted to branch out into more experimental solo work while still performing with his band Mikaw Barish. As Kahney put more and more of his time and effort into his solo work he started posting clips of his guitar playing on internet forums like Sevenstring.org and taking the feedback he’d get into account.
A few others were composing, producing and releasing music completely independently as well, and the resulting genre, a mix of progressive metal, ambient and electronica, was called Djent. Named after the onomatopoeic word for the palm muted guitar riffs that they played, this meant that Kahney was at the forefront of an entire movement. As interest in what he was creating grew and grew, he started to turn his demos and riffs into full songs and put together a full band that came together in 2007. He christened the resulting band Tesseract and their first release came the same year, a demo CD containing parts of what would later make up their debut album.
Since then the band has released two critically acclaimed studio albums, 2011’s “One” and 2013’s “Altered State”, which sealed their reputation as not just one of the most exciting new bands in British metal but also one of the most artistically accomplished. How many other bands have included a 27 minute song split into six suites on their debut album? How many have then followed that up with a second album that’s a 51 minute continuous piece of music divided into four sections? Very, very few, that’s who. What’s more is that it’s working. That second album? The 51 minute continuous piece of music? Charted on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
The band have toured with everyone from Periphery to The Devin Townsend Project and in 2014, sold out London’s 1’145 capacity Scala with ease. There is a bright future ahead for these guys and they’ve achieved the success they’ve had through sheer integrity and without a hint of compromise. They are the future of heavy music, and that is very good news indeed.
Leer másThere are few bands that have as much control over their music as TesseracT do. This English progressive metal band not only produce, mix and master all of their tracks by themselves, but they are also responsible for helping to found the entire sub-genre that their music falls into. This control over their sound means that TesseracT holds themselves to unbelievably high standards and that their music is full of integrity.
The clean vocals featured on TesseracT songs are unusual for the genre, but it is one of the many elements that really really works for the band and sets them apart from the crowd. TesseracT isn’t content to go with the status quo: they know what they want to achieve with their music and they go out there and make it happen.
It’s awesome to see the elements of a TesseracT song build layer by layer during a live gig. There is some real musical mastery going on within their songs, and the trio of tracks within “Of Matter” sound truly epic in a live setting. Their “Concealing Fate” EP is some of my favourite work from the band, and it is majestic when performed live. The members of TesseracT work incredibly well together and are so worth seeing live.
First time I seen tesseract live, and it was totally worth it,y'all guys sound better live than on CD and that's hard to accomplish so congrats.the whole band was out standing and on point as always haha.the line up was skyharbor, erra, the contortionist, and tesseract,i couldn't of asked for a better line up.I was so happy tesseract played proxy, retrospect, resist, nocturne, and tourniquet,it made my night.and plus after all that Jay threw his drum stick out and I caught it and of course I had to get it signed.thank u tesseract so much for an unforgettable night as goes for skyharbor, erra, the the contortionist, keep on rockin dudes and I hope and pray u all have a merry Christmas and happy holidays☺

Pretty mystical show... they're like another layer of consciousness, even though their music is slower for metal and a bit jumpy rhythm-wise, they're unique live for their light show, ambience, grind, and singer stage presence. I left feeling great as it seems most did exiting with smiles on their faces or talking graciously of them or standing in line to make souvenir purchases.
One thing I did not like however was that the stage lights were way too bright, and either made the whole room or other people too bright or hurt my eyes when they hit them. I think the lights are Tesseract's, and I don't know if they work better at bigger venues, but they just were too bright.
TesseracT were definitely the best show of the night. However, and I say this as a fan of TesseracT (as well as their previous band FellSilent), seeing them in concert brought home to me how similar their songs seem to each other. I really dig that sound, but it doesn't seem to me to necessarily translate as well to a live show as just having it on playing at home...
Maybe it was partially due to a bad soundboard? I mean, before them Between the Buried and Me had an AWFUL sound mix, barely able to hear their singer sing or gorwl and way too much clicking from the drum mics. I think they fixed it for TesseracT, but maybe not...
I’ve read some reviews of Flex before going there. There were some nasty things being said about the place but being there I found put its not really that bad.
The sound quality was really great and crisp clear. All the bands performed beautifully and the public loved them.
About Tesseract? There isnt much to say other than they re simply amazing and they sound great amazing.
Though personally I loved Ashe, Daniel is also incredibly good and up at the top.
Technically they were also incredible, really nothing bad to say about the show.
CONS:
- Flex doesnt have card payments so i had nothing to drink :(
I traveled from Canada to Lansing to see this show during a winter weather advisory, and it was sooo worth it. These guys are so tight live, I honestly have no idea how they can keep rhythm with such complicated time signatures. It's truly a pleasure to watch the flawless execution of some really great tunes. Although Sonder only came out last year, I am really looking forward to seeing what these guys come up with in the future!

Supported by ethereal duo Nordic Giants, and also the crushingly heavy The Contortionist, Tesseract blew everyone away with their surgical precision. Featuring songs from all three albums (One, Altered State, and their latest endeavour Polaris), every song had the whole room absorbed and involved.
10/10, would definitely go and see them again.
Great show! I really liked the sound and corresponding light show! Stunning performance, awesome!! Tesseract really kept it going, the audience was excited and everybody enjoyed it, from the beginning to the end. And the location, Szene Wien, is a really nice place to be, has a good sound.
I had a good time!!
Hands down the best show I have ever been to. The band was locked in and sounded incredible. Dan Tompkins is an amazing front man and his live vocals are just as impressive as the album recorded stuff. I cannot recommend seeing them love enough!
Truly impressive live experience, and they played all their hits. They don't mess around live, no filler, just straight through what the crowd wants. One of the best live performances I've seen in a while, my second time seeing them.
