Biografía

  • Through her eclectic avant-garde pop infused with electronica, Björk (born November 21st, 1965) has become an international icon with her intelligent, forward-thinking music that frequently defies expectation.

Following the demise of her band, the Sugarcubes, in 1992, Björk embarked upon a solo career that would lead her to widespread critical acclaim and chart success. Yet this was not her first solo album. Björk had already released a hit record at the young age of 11, a collection of covers that found great success in her native country. The child prodigy later became lead vocalist for the Sugarcubes, whose art rock found a hit album in the US and UK after the release of "Life's Too Good" in 1988. After their break-up, Björk traveled to London, where she became interested in the burgeoning dance scene, which would inform much of her solo musical direction from there on.

In 1992, "Debut" was released, Björk's first solo venture since she was 11 years old. The album took influence from trip hop and electronica, with the likes of Tricky, Underworld and Nellee Hooper lending their production talents. The resulting album became hugely successful, peaking at number three in the UK charts, featuring a number of hit singles that found chart success globally. Björk became a runaway success, earning countless awards and accolades at the year's end.

Björk's following releases continued to find critical acclaim, most notably in the UK, spawning several remix albums of her work subsequently. In 2000, Björk was also named 'Best Actress' at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance in Lars Von Trier's "Dancer in the Dark." Alongside her solo efforts, Björk also created several film soundtracks, helping to diversify her work. In 2004, she released the ambitious "Medúla," an album made up entirely of vocal samples before then returning to the more beat-driven, upbeat record, "Volta" in 2007.

Björk continued to be ambitious in her scope for musical exploration, creating the concept album "Biophillia," which explored humanity's interaction with the natural world, most notably its geological landscape, and how music reflects this. The album also spawned an IMAX film, as well as a BBC 4 documentary, "When Björk met David Attenborough," further exploring this subject matter.

Forever busy, Björk appeared on a Death Grips release, on the album, "Niggas on the Moon." A live DVD of her "Biophillia" project followed shortly after in 2014, which captured Björk's ability to put on an impressive live show. In 2015, her ninth studio album was unexpectedly released after it was leaked prior on the internet, yet Björk still found critical acclaim for her highly anticipated "Vulnicura."

It could be argued that Björk's 2011 release 'Crystalline' was her most creative and daring collection since her career began way back in 1992. The Icelandic mega-star has always been known to push boundaries of visual media and its relation with music and this innovation remains present during her live performance.

From the percussive intro to 'Cosmogony' the sense of anticipation in the room is strong as the audience watch Björk's impressive choir ominously chant the introduction. The classic tracks such as 'Hunter' and 'Hidden Place' gain huge cheers and the performance of these influential pieces of alternative pop prove why Björk is such an iconic musician.

With such a large discography, she continuously keeps her set lists fresh and interesting by playing a variety of fan favourites as opposed to reverting straight back to the likes of 'Crying' or 'Army Of Me'. 'The Pleasure Is All Mine' sounded wonderful with a supporting choir, and 'Mouth's Cradle' was as haunting as ever.

Perhaps the oldest track performed of the evening 'Hyperballad' attains the most poignant moment as her pained vocal annunciates every lyric on this tender and beautiful ballad. The controversial 'Declare Independence' acts as the encore and the way in which Björk delivers this epic piece of power pop leaves audiences chattering about the Scandinavian star all the way into the night.

  • Being in the audience for a Björk performance is the modern equivalent of being one of those slack jawed scientists at the end of “Close Encounters” who stand there in amazement when the higher beings descend from above to teach us a new musical language.

Your mind melts and your synapses stretch under a slew of signals and images until you’re simply transported somewhere else.

    She’s a genius.

This was the first dress rehearsal for her forthcoming world tour for her new album, Utopia and it was staged in a local cinema near to her home in Reykjavik.

We had been politely asked by Björk to refrain from taking any pictures before, during or after the show, but I can describe the set as a multi-layered combination of platforms and stages, some of which rotated while Björk or her amazing supporting artists moved from one level to another.

Those support artists are seven female flautists, who call to mind Shakespearean woodland nymphs and sprites as they jauntily run from one stage to another.

The set was dressed as a river garden, with fronds and delicate arrays of plants.

The set was around 90 minutes long, with a one song encore and no interval.

As a gig experience, it was incredibly emotional and affecting and I still find myself somewhat stunned by it now, the next day.

If you can get tickets, get them. This is not to be missed.

  • Björk's creativity and ability to captivate her audience is indescribable. She exudes such raw talent and a talent for entertaining her audience. She is so different and uniquely Björk that there can be no one just like her.

Her performance at each of her shows is something else. It seems as though she loves to perform and loves to bare herself to the audience.

Her voice is lovely and has a quality about it that is all her own. live is a sight to behold and her style can seem strange to some unfamiliar with her but her fans know that she just expresses herself differently. It really is something completely worthwhile to see her live and in person. The audience really appreciates her and her adorably unique voice.

She sounds dainty and tiny at first but throughout her show she gets progressively louder and more resonating and you can feel how powerful her voice can be. Everyone in the audience will be silent, you don't dare make a sound as she unfolds before your eyes and ears.

Björk is an unforgettable experience and her music, show and audience come together with such perfect clarity. She is delicate and strong and everything you would want as a performer.

  • Let me start off by saying that I don't like all of Björk's music but there are a few specific songs that I fell in love with and listened to nonstop at one point, and she got me through a pretty tough time in my life. So I was kind of scared that Her new album would not really be my thing, and after listening to several of its songs, I was convinced it wasn't. I bought the tickets mostly for the visuals.

My low expectations completely dissolved about 10 seconds into the concert. Björk's incredible voice in combination with her visual performance was literal magic. It was a feast for the senses - all the senses. In terms of music/movies/art I have about the emotional capacity of a brick wall, but I teared up more than once. I had to keep myself in check constantly, asking "Oh my god. Is this really happening to me right now?"

It was the fastest-moving two hours of my life. Seeing Björk live at Carnegie Hall was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I've tried to sum it up in this review but to be honest, I feel like no words could ever come close to capturing what I saw, heard, felt, and went through.

  • Excellent support from Lotic and Arca set the tone for a march harder, 'festival-style', beats-and-bass-oriented gig than I expected, but was utterly excited by. Did not expect to dance *so much* but it was impossible not to. Cracking setlist going as far back as Army of Me and Hunter, but still weaving in new faves like Mutual Core and of course the main body of Vulnicura. As predicted, Mouth Mantra translated pretty extraordinarily to a live set, and the pyrotechnics didn't hurt. Hyperballad was the perfect encore too. Bjork herself was on undeniably good form, but then that was never in doubt - her vocals on point, and her fun command of the stage made her feel accessible and the moments intimate despite the content being so constantly explosive and grand. Couldn't have asked for more.

  • Epic.

A stripped down Björk with no band or choir this time, but with orchestra instead. Just her, the orchestra and the music. The first part of the performance featured on the new album 'Vulnicura' which is another masterpiece. After the brief intermission we were in more familiar territory with powerful and moving interpretations of some of her more famous songs. Jöga and Bachelorette being standout versions for me personally but sadly, no 'Pagan Poetry' in this set. After two hours of magical music from Björk, the sold out audience at the Hammersmith Eventim Apollo left satisfied and amazed one again. 10/10.

  • Saw Bjork perform at the Harpa in Reykjavik, the ticket along with the flights from the UK plus accommodation cost me a fortune, but still I have no regrets. Singing with just a string orchestra, Bjork's voice sounded as good as it ever has, and what a powerful, emotive performance from what has to be the most original artist out there.

Can't wait to see her again!
