  9th October, 2014. The Haunt, Brighton. Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express. So it’s off to breezy Brighton tonight with Graham to see the legend that’s Chuck Prophet. Older listeners may remember him from 80’s rockers Green on Red. By my count it’s the eleventh time we’ve seen Chuck and he rarely disappoints. Its country rock at its finest. A new venue tonight, The Haunt with its naff ghostly logo. A small room with booths down one side, weird. We are given a wristband at the door to show at the bar that proves we are over 18, like there would be any doubt. It’s a largely mature audience who have obviously been with Chuck since the start with a smattering of youngsters who are about to receive a lesson in fine music. Chuck arrives with some sartorial elegance donning a red suit and spotty shirt which is light years away from a 12 bar show where his jeans had more holes than a block of Swiss cheese. A new very good album Night Surfer to promote, the set does not include anything from any of his 20th Century albums which is a shame as it ignores two of his best, Balinese Dancer and Homemade Blood. The new tracks blend in with half a dozen from his last album and works to particular effect when he shares lead guitar duties. As ever his wife Stephanie Finch, despite a cold, provides beautiful harmonies and keyboard accompaniment.

  Half way through the set Chuck and as reference to Brighton breaks into an impromptu Pinball Wizard slowed down in a Johnny Cash country style. He tells a great Flamin Groovies story before covering their Shake Some Action and ends with the sing-along You Did and we walk back to the car with a Bomp Shooby Dooby Bomp. As usual an impeccable show from Chuck who is both underrated as a songwriter but also a Telecasting guitar picker.

• Chuck Prophet is a guitar slinger that has been in the music biz for more decades now, more than most Songkick users have been alive, including a notorious stint in the late great 80's alt-country band Green on Red.

  While that may seem like a long time in some respects, he's always keeping his approach fresh, while his initial influences remain firmly footed in the classic rock of yesteryear like they just don't know how to shake & bake anymore. His live sets are cool and competent without being complacent and constipated with obligatory revisits to the back catalog graveyard.

  Some may come across him from his collaborations with Alejandro Escovedo or the songwriting he's done for artists he grew up listening to like Kim Carnes and Heart. He's a real rambling storytellin' troubadour from the mystical old school that never was, and a perpetual teenager making adult rock for the young at heart.

  The solidly American music of Chuck Prophet kinda creeps up on listeners, with a relatively low profile on the music industry's rock n roll radar. If the big name buzz bands seem like military drones invading the airwaves from overhead, Chuck's albums flutter more like kites over Kansas cornfields on the edge of towns bypassed by the big box stores. Your average Warped tour ready pop punk band with some forgettable name & even more forgettable songs can sell more t-shirts in a weekend than Chuck will do in a year, but Chuck ain't really in it for the merch. He's got more pop craftsmanship & hectic holy history in the tunes he carefully carves out than an army of skateboard punks & tour busses huddled in some parking lot.

• Chuck Prophet at Outpost in the Burbs last night was so fun! My husband and I are both wondering why he isn't a superstar yet?! He's definitely got the writing skills, the voice and the musical chops to be a huge star. Had a great nights. Hope the rest of his tour is just as much fun.

• He really is incredibly talented and a nice guy with a cool wife who plays with him! They were both great talking with fans after the show. His new album, particularly Bad Day for Rock and Roll is great live.

• A great concert. Unfortunately not enough people attending. Chuck definitely deserves more attention. A super great performer and an awesome show in Frankfurt. I hope to see more of Chuck soon.

• Really enjoyed an absolute fabulous concert and the great intimate atmosphere at La Boule Noire- this is how a rock concert is supposed to be when it's best ! Come back soon to Paris Chuck !

• Great show from a fantastic, tight band. Best guitar playing I have heard for many a year. Great mix of old and new songs, all done with a touch of humour.
