Jennifer Lee, better known by her stage name TOKiMONSTA, is an American instrumental hip-hop/ electronica artist from Los Angeles, California.
Growing up in Torrance, California and having graduated from University of California, Irvine, Tokimonsta released her first album, an EP entitled “Bedtime Lullabies” in 2008 followed by a full-length album entitled “Midnight Menu” in 2010. The album was released by The Flying Lotus crew/label, Brainfeeder, with Tokimonsta being the first female to join the group. She toured around the world, gaining popularity by both mainstream media as well as underground magazines; in fact, she was named by LA Weekly as “2010’s #1 female DJ in Los Angeles.” In addition to the release of her EP, she took part of the Red Bull Music Academy in London in 2010.
A year later she released another EP entitled “Creature Dreams,” as well as the EP, “Los Angeles 8/10.” Tokimonsta also collaborated with Suzi Analogue, with the two releasing an EP entitled “Boom.” The eleven-track album was released under the name Analogue Monsta. During the summer of 2012 she toured across Canada as part of the Full Flex Express tour with Skrillex, Diplos, Pretty Lights and Grimes; the tour was the first electronic music themed train tour to run through Canada. On 9 April 2013 she released her second full-length album, “Half Shadows,” through the New York based, Ultra Records.
Leer másI had been salivating over the prospect of seeing TOKiMONSTA live since missing her concert in Seattle shortly after discovering her music 3 years ago. Well on 9/15/17, Miss Jennifer Lee kicked off the US leg of her Lune Rouge Experience tour in Portland and she was more than worth the wait! This show was divided into two distinct halves: the first contained old favorites like "Darkest (Dim)" and "Gamble" mixed with new material from the forthcoming Lune Rouge album and stayed a mostly in a head-bobbing, mid-tempo pace. The second half was sheer terminal velocity: a relentless assault on the senses in the most pleasurable way, with uptempo house,hip-hop and serious dirty bass vibes. TOKiMONSTA was warm, open---taking a moment to speak candidly about the health issues that sidelined her for over a year---and playful...loved the way she coyly hid her face behind her hands in anticipation before delivering soul-shaking bass. She seemed to fuse every celebratory bass drop with love and by the end the entire crowd felt connected to her and each other. The Lune Rouge Experience is the best electronic show I've seen this year, highly recommended!
Jennifer Lee forms the artist known as TOKiMONSTA (try pronouncing that). The Californian born artist dabbles in electronica and hip hop simultaneously, blending the two together seamlessly. She is as eccentric as her name suggests, if her appearance is anything to go by. She rocked on to stage wearing her trademark round glasses, a bright yellow snapback and with distinctly green hair. She voice is refreshingly unique with some beautiful qualities to it and her music is original and very easy to listen to. It wasn’t a party hard atmosphere, but more of a spaced out, chilled feel. The crowd seemed to really enjoy her music and every track was met with rapturous applause. There is definitely a very edgy vibe to her sound that sets her apart from the millions of other hopeful DJs and electronic artists dreaming of making it big. ‘Go With It’ was the biggest crowd pleaser of the night, and easily her most recognisable song. Throughout the night there were catchy beats, pumping bass and an ensnaring drum beat that maintained a great show all night.
Tokimonsta is the Los Angeles creative who is accompanied by singer M.N.D.R. You can immediately tell from her appearance that she is such a creative with her trademark-rounded glasses and original fashion sense. There is just something whimsical about the overall sound, a real diamond in the rough. This song, “Go With It”, has enough obscurity in the verse, with a hugely infectious chorus, with the largest hook you can imagine, making you want to join in. Tokimonsta is commercial but credible, adopting a style quite similar to her contemporaries - Lady Gaga and Naked and Famous. “Steal My Attention” is the closer of this set, featuring a powerful kick drumbeat, complete with some interesting samples. It builds and builds escalating with a military snare drum beat. The chorus is fantastically minimal with a pulsating, and quick oscillating bass line holding it all together, with the odd samples coming in here and there. It is just so well executed – I would love to know how this DJ does it live!
Audio is an intimate venue, with remarkably enchanting lighting for such a small space. It gets pretty cramped when it sells out, but I managed to get a good wiggle going in my 2 square feet of floor space.
Tokimonsta was masterful, although didn't take the decks until around 12:30, after long sets from two openers. I rallied, enjoying even the encore, which was all old school hip hop, although it put a hurtin' on my Friday at work.
Tickets for such a great artist are rarely this cheap ($23!), especially for *five hours* of music. Thanks, Toki, and thanks Audio <3
TOKiMONSTA brought contagious energy and amazing sound, and she did not fail to play all the songs that peope will want to hear most - even The World is Ours, an old hit which is only available on YouTube! Not only that, but she played a brand new, unreleased song as well. A concert, definitely recommended! And her fans make a nice audience as well; no complaints there.
Toki loved us in Brooklyn before she even played a track! We heard about half of her new album, Gavin Turek had some fun with throwbacks and Toki’s New stuff, and there were lots of remixes of popular songs, a few Kendrick Lamar “DAMN” songs and I CANT STOP BY FLUX PAVILLION.
Very cool chick!
Honestly won't pay for another Tokimonsta show. Doors opened at 10:00..got there waited around 3 hours and she still wasn't on..I left around 1:15 and she still wasn't on. So I didn't even get to see her set..pretty disappointing!
It was a great show! The check in was fast and the beer was a reasonable price, the performance was great! I loved how Tokimonsta was having a good time while she played her music. It was a pleasure being able to attend
toki-bunny beastin (awesome, great, badass)!
cant wait until she comes back to atlanta, georgia.
why does it have to be at least 30 words? pineapple, mango, apple, sauce, do not make me type more please
Was one special show! Under the dome of the Charles Hayden Planetarium, astro traveling through black holes with TOKiMONSTA providing the beats!
You shoulda been there, the opening act was ok too!
