  • LCD Soundsystem

Dressed all in white, with an oxygen tank in tow, Mr. Murphy joined his band to the roar of the crowd each night. Lights extended over the heads of security and swept across thousands of outstretched arms attached to fists pumping to the beat of “Us v Them”. The stage upon a stage had been built section by section, while a multitude of music-making devices were unwrapped, before Nancy and Pat and the rest of the 7-piece Soundsystem warmed things up for the man himself.

Small droplets of rain welcomed the band back to Red Rocks on Tuesday night, but the sky was clear over the soaking wet crowd when they took the stage on Wednesday. Murphy and his crew had weathered an intense rain and lightning storm backstage that second night, but wasted no time hoisting the planet-sized disco ball into the air to encourage the not-so-lucky audience to dance themselves dry. “Thanks for coming, I’m sorry it rained on you.”

Not to be outmatched by an artificial spectacle, the lightning stuck around to augment the party both nights. Bright flashes and bold fingers cracked through the black sky as Murphy reminisced about the time Daft Punk was playing at his house. The disco ball was the sole stage prop and there were no LED screens to hide the natural backdrop either; just some cheesy 80’s transitions playing out on the permanent side screen, with the occasional birds-eye view of the extremely talented circus of musicians. Even the disco ball disappeared as the mood transitioned seamlessly into a full blast electro-punk show. The greatest dance party Red Rocks had to offer this year didn’t consist of a single DJ or an extravagant light show; it was all about the music. Real life music. The pacing was perfect as well. The downbeat, personal “I Can Change” was followed by the percussion-heavy, post-dance “Get Innocous!”, before shit was lit for “You Wanted A Hit”. There was never a somber moment, but light shelling would follow every barrage, thus allowing an ebb and flow with a palatable texture.

Having seen LCD Soundsystem perform in the past, I knew what to expect from the show, but I also knew there would be no way to accurately describe the experience. I streamed the Coachella set into my living room and I was almost bored. I felt the same way when watching the live footage in the Shut Up and Play the Hits documentary. But there is something visceral about being at the show. It awakens some primal urge to dance and destroy shit at the same time; like physically being in the crowd at a Fugazi concert, but listening to Homework on headphones at the same time. The music, and Murphy’s physical reaction to channeling it, should tear the listener apart, yet it releases a state of euphoria instead. I know the Talking Heads were a big influence on the band, and I don’t believe Murphy is quite the frontman David Byrne was, but watching LCD perform over the past two nights, I do believe they will mean as much to our generation at the Heads meant to theirs.

  • Even though it's highly unlikely that anyone will ever get to witness a true LCD Soundsystem show any time soon, they are one of the very best live acts I've ever had the privilege to experience. An LCD live show is unbeatable and visceral.

What do I like about LCD Soundsystem? I like that they created their own sound out of the sounds that came before them, paying homage to the material from which they borrow while creating something that will one day get an homage of its own.

I like them because they put on a live show that I can see five times in a week and never get sick of (true story). I like them because they know what they stand for and make no apologies.

I like them because their music speaks to me in the same way that the music of The Beach Boys and The Doors speaks to me - through songs that are carefully crafted from bass to vocal and everywhere in between, and I know that that care has not gone to waste, because I am there to appreciate it with every listen. I like them because I feel connected to them through their art.

  • dec.3/17 saw lcd at the air Canada centre. I enjoyed the show very much! They were a great band to see live. They put on a good show and played for 1 3/4 hours new and old hits. I usually go to smaller venues that are more intimate but this show was worth seeing even if I was at the other end of the arena.

There was no opening act, someone was hidden amongst the instruments on the stage playing some of the worst music for a big arena act ever. Plain instrumentals mostly of meaningless soulless house..I had to endure 1 and a half hours of that lame music. Seemed so plain that it was to make lcd sound better..no need lcd were great without that crap opening dj act...meh

it took an hour before I noticed someone was DJing that elevator music...then another 45 min. lcd came out and made me forget about the opening music..

air Canada centre was too expensive for food and drink and 90 dollar tickets with no real opening act says it all.

Massey hall or the Danforth Music hall are way better places to see a band and half the price.

  • This was special. I loved every minute of it!

This was my first time at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Two things: the sound system delivered a perfect experience. I was in first row - the beats blew my mind and body away, but not my ears! Second: the air was cold and clear - all together I was surprised to find this venue so pleasant, giving the fact that I normally only go to small events.

LCD Soundsystem is special! They started with Get Innocuous and they didn't stop. Ever. They delivered a huge production! Everything was performed on stage. They had 3 percussionists and a dirtier guitar playing than on their recordings. The music, the sound, the lights - it was one of the bests shows I have seen this year.

About Songkick - I love you guys!

  • In light of the Brooklyn Steel gigs being announced, and adding one of those dates to my "going" list, I thought I'd add a review. However, having read through previous ones on Songkick, there's not much else to add and vesper385 pretty much sums up my thoughts.

I will add though that, I have ben lucky enough to have seen LCD in various places / countries, and are a band I can never tire of. NIN, The Cure, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode have all been major live favourites over the years, but probably NIN aside, LCD top those artists by a mile. They are clearly all fantastic musicians, and they have a power, and create a vibe (consistently) at their gigs that I have rarely seen matched. Long live LCD Soundsystem.

  • First of all, I must mention that Big Freedia opened for this show. I was a little like, errr...not so sure about all that bounce and twerk, but I gotta say...I was impressed! Amazing dancers:-)

LCD did really well, the crowd seemed to appreciate everything, but Mr. Murphy seemed just a tad scattered, or distracted? Although when he was in a song, he was fully there. Great crowd, wonderful fashion, and a lot of fun!

Suggestion? Please use spotlights like the last part of the show rather than backlights cuz we can't see your faces then, and you are all so lovely it might be nice for you to come out of the dark.

    Love.....

  • As usual, Murphy and his amazing band was just mesmerizing. Even under the heavy rain that was pouring, none of the nearly 4 000 people in the Old Antic theatre of Vienne was afraid anyway.

The sound was great and it is always a pleasure to see them back on stage with such amazing sound and style.

LCD Soundsystem is *REALLY* a UFO Band.

  • Saw them last night in the Boston University auditorium. I'm almost 50, but danced the whole time in the general admission zone with a mix of people who were <21 and some who were at least mid 60s. The giant disco ball was AWESOME! Great show!

  • I saw LCD back in Bristol O2 Academy many moons ago. They were incredible then and even better tonight! What a gig. Amazing!

From Get Innocuous to the final belting of All My Friends, everything was so tightly knit, it was beyond belief!
