Biografía

  • Great Lake Swimmers is a Canadian indie and melodic folk rock band formed by Tony Dekker in 2003, based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Led by the melodic folk excursions of Tony Dekker, Great Lake Swimmers originally from Wainfleet, Ontario, Canada, released their eponymously-titled debut album in 2003. Released on the small independent label Weewerk, the album subsequently earned a U.S. release on the label Misra Records in 2005. The band’s follow-up, “Bodies and Minds” (2005), like its predecessor has been compared to the luscious folk of Red House Painters, Nick Drake and Iron & Wine.

After the release Great Lake Swimmers signed to Nettwerk and expanded on their Canadian popularity with their third full-length “Ongiara” in 2007. Aided by the indie chart topping single “Your Rocking Spine”, which also appeared on the American TV show “Weeds”, the band was able to tour in support of the album for two years, however still found time to record their fourth studio album. “Lost Channels” was issued in March 2009 and represented the height of Great Lake Swimmer’s creativity, subsequently being shortlisted for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize and earning a Juno Award nomination.

Also in 2009 the band released a live EP “The Legion Sessions”, which featured live versions of a number of “Lost Channels” songs. Having appeared in the documentary series “City Sonic” and “National Parks Project”, the Great Lake Swimmers released their fifth full-length album “New Wild Everywhere” in April 2013. The same year arrived Dekker’s solo album “Prayer of the Woods”, including covers of Lightfoot and Human Sexual Responses, followed in 2014 by the cover album “Sings 10 Years of Zunior” to mark the 10 year anniversary of the music store Zunior.

  • Great Lake Swimmers

Great Lake Swimmers performed in Louisville, KY at Zanzibar last night. Their set focused largely on their most recent release, The Waves, The Wake. Their most recent work includes a vast array of electric and acoustic instruments that helped to explore and broaden the Great Lake Swimmers sound. Perfoming a set of this material live without the woodwinds, harps, etc., could have fallen flat, felt false or even hollow. Instead, we were treated to an inspired, richly textured set of songs.

GLS is a band that seems to keep an eye on the horizon, always growing, trying new things and inviting their audience along for the journey. Mr. Dekker's vocals, as always, were absolutely on point, atmospheric and perfectly balanced with the subtle and intricate guitar playing many associate with this band. The other members of the band, multi-instrumentalists all, were truly amazing to watch. Listening to GLS live you can get a true sense of collaborative spirit alive and seemingly well in this band. They truly play together and the overall effect is amazing.

I do also want to mention the lovely duo that opened the evening, Native Harrow. I had not had a chance to check this band out prior to the show. I was very impressed with them and will be following up on Spotify, etc. The usual suspects were there, folk-pop sensibilities, solid acoustic performances from both members, etc. BUT, this is a band that is so much more. Listening more critically you get a deep sense that these two are really in it together. They share a real sense of where the other is in their space and as such the music has a chance to shine. Their beautiful arrangements are able to live and breathe and the vocals can maintain their color and delicacy within the framework of the songs.

This was a wonderful show. I cannot recommend both of these bands highly enough.

  • Great Lake Swimmers have a nice, pastoral folky sound and wonderful vocal harmonies. Their sound is like slowcore meets indie folk, and the mix is just pure gold.

The band pulls their sound together beautifully, live. The dreamy, sad quality of their music gives their live sound an ethereal, distant haunting sound. It is loud, cinematic, sad, and beautifully written.

The vocals match the music's aesthetic, but also provide a poppy edge. The female harmonies sound emotional, and the band utilizes midwestern emo style guitar chords and rhythms for a passionately loud effect. I was just continually blown away by the band's sound. They seemed to have a true passion for the music that they were making, and it really heightened and sharpened their sound. The guitar sounded like it was an alternate tool for the musician to express their emotions.

I just loved every second of their dream pop sound. It was fresh, and clean, and the melodies really gave their tone an advantage. The melodies perfectly complement the musical aesthetic, and the distant, dreamy sound of the Great Lake Swimmers was a new favorite of mine. The audience happily swayed for the rest of the set, and happily cheered when it was over. I was really impressed by these guys.

  • My partner and I saw the Great Lake Swimmers last night at The Forge in London. The venue also has an upstairs restaraunt where we had dinner before hand and who were seated next to us but the band. They are as lovely as their music and I was so glad to have the opporotunity to express my appreciation for their music.

The show started at 9:15 and the venue only held 300 people so it was a very intimate and cosey atmosphere. They played a lot of oldies mixed in with the tracks off of their latest album that came out last year. Only three members of the band were present but the truly acoustic setup was wonderful.

The show did not disappoint on any level and these guys are talented beyond measure. They played for about an hour and a half and we got on the bus back to Oxford, very very happy indeed.

  • first time we saw them was at the st. james hall,

in vancouver, excellent acoustics. kate maki was

the opener and to be honest kate was who we went

to see but we were blown away by the beauty

of the great lake swimmers. feel kind of stupid

they made me cry, could have been partly

being a bit drunk and taking cold meds so

i have wouldn't have throat grumbles and

disturb the performance. there music is sad

and emotional anyways so it brought that

out. can't wait to see them tonight at the green frog,

tony dekker has the sweetest and saddest voice,

hopefully i won't tear up again!

  • This was one of the best shows I've been to. Very intimate setting, acoustic set of many of the new songs from their upcoming release. Tony's vocals were amazing! Angelic...especially on The Talking Wind. Absolutely beautiful. Great band, great venue. Had a wonderful time talking with Tony afterward. Such a talented, gifted musician, and one of the nicest people I've ever met.

  • A surprisingly vigorous concert, kicked off with two uptempo numbers and nicely paced throughout. As well, the star of the show turned out to be Melissa Mulholland, whose violin added an edge to the songs, and whose backup singing, fiery red hair and general stage presence added warmth and colour.

  • What an amazing concert! They are such calm, natural performers, and the music just flows through them. Their name really coralates with their music - it felt like we were swimming underwater. They also joked with the audience and played a few requested songs. It was truly a flawless performance.

  • Great Lake Swimmers always sound excellent live and last night was no exception. I only wish they'd played for longer.

The seating at the show was terrible though - really uncomfortable. Would have prefered to stand.

  • Awesome opener with a beautiful voice in Brooke Anabale opening. The Hideout was the perfect venue for their quiet, contemplative folk sound. Second show we've seen and highly recommend you check them out!!

  • Great concert of the 3 piece GLS composition. No drums this time, but great songs and a fantastic performance. Had a lot of fun. Also: Great support by Mary Lattimore.
