  • Courtney Marie Andrews

faultless, brilliant, spell binding, outstanding, jaw droppingly good, aural perfection, the list goes on. This is the easiest review I have written.

Before I move onto Courtney herself a massive shout out to Islington Assembly Hall. This is by far the best mid-sized venue in London and I have yet to have a bad experience here. The sound quality from the first note was spot on and although the gig was sold out the venue never over sell and so there is always room to move about. Sight lines are great, toilets are the best venue toilets in London. Only criticism is beer is expensive.

After first seeing Courtney a year ago in small pub in Guildford in front of thirty people, the universal acclaim and quality of ‘Honest Life’ and new album ‘May your Kindness Remain’ have seen her step up to the 800 capacity IAH.

In keeping with the venue upgrade so too has Courtney herself. No longer the shy, slightly withdrawn woman that graced the Keep in Guildford, she has matured as an artist and really grown into this now found status. The band too have all stepped up their game, they are tight without being showy, understated but driving the sound along perfectly and provide the perfect foil for her sublime vocals.

Often compared to Joni or Emmylou what I take now from her voice especially on the new album is how much it sounds like Maria McKee particularly at the higher end of her range. And boy what a range. Stylistically it’s generally a folk/country fusion but on ‘Border’, one of my favourite tracks from the new album, there is a real Pink Floyd vibe going on with the Rick Wright organ and then the Gilmour inspired guitar solo.

The pacing of the show is perfect with a nice blend of ballads and up-tempo numbers with Andrews shifting effortlessly between acoustic, electric guitar and organ. I have seen another review of tonight claiming the performance was sluggish and road weary. Well this is not a Beyoncé show, what are they expecting. However, if you want to be transfixed for ninety minutes and lose yourself in a lush voice supported by fine musicians then I dare you to suggest where you will find a better example of this in contemporary music today.

It’s too difficult to pick a highlight on a night of such high standards but the encore of ‘Irene’, ‘Let the good one go’ and the Little Feat cover of ‘Willin’ rounded off the evening perfectly.

‘till the next time, keep on country folk rockin’ y’all.

  • Saturday 4th March. The Keep, Guildford. Courtney Marie Andrews. So a complete contrast to my last gig with twenty thousand people in the behemoth that is the O2 on Monday to a tiny pub in Guildford with fifty other hardy souls.

Courtney Marie originally from Phoenix, Arizona and latterly of Seattle is difficult to classify. She sits with one foot in each of the country and folk camps. Her voice seems to drift effortlessly from a Mary Chapin Carpenteresque classic country style through Carole King, Laura Nyro to the modern folk sound of Laura Marling taking in everything that was great about seventies Laurel Canyon. It’s a beautiful instrument, powerful yet understated.

Tonight she is supported by her friend Bryan on pedal steel to give the songs a little more depth as and when she requires. Whilst Courtney has produced several albums it is her current album ‘Honest Life’ that has finally given her the recognition she deserves. Most of the set comes from this along with a couple of newbies and oldies.

‘Table for one’ and ‘Put the fire out’ (which has an uncanny similarity to Steve Earle’s ‘Guitar Town’) stand out for me in a night full of highlights. After an hour it’s all over but such is the size of the venue there is no escape from the crowd and she returns back to the stage for two encores and it’s probably only the British politeness that allows her to finish there as I could have happily listened for another hour.

Special thanks to the pub and promotor who saw her potential early and booked this artist for such a small venue. She won’t be playing pubs this size for much longer as demonstrated by her return trip to these shores in September. One word for the venue though. When it’s a sold out show like tonight it might be an idea to have at least a couple of rows of chairs at the front and then standing behind. As the audience are so close, unless you are literally right in front you cannot see the artist at all especially someone as tiny as Courtney. A minor grip though on a magical evening.

Keep on folk country rockin’ y’all.

  • Monday 4th September. Courtney Marie Andrews. Bush Hall. Apologies for the late posting but went straight off to Florida to ride a Hurricane the day after this gig. So it’s the second time for me seeing Courtney Marie after an intimate show in a pub in Guildford earlier this year.

It’s a full band tonight and this really adds a depth to the songs which are a combination of tracks from the current album, the rereleased ‘On My Page’ and a bunch of new stuff.

I won’t rehash my review from earlier in the year but suffice to say that Courtney possesses a beautiful voice, sometimes frail, often haunting but always magnificent. She’s a little bit Joni, a little bit Rita, a little bit Janis and a little bit Emmylou but a 100% Courtney Marie. The sound is as usual excellent at Bush Hall.

Highlights for me include my single of the year ‘Table for One’ and ‘How quickly your heart mends’.

A great night for a rising star on the scene.

    Keep on Cali rockin y’all

  • We saw Courtney Marie with her band at The Deaf Institute in Manchester. She played songs from her impressive body of work, a number of new ones as well as old favourites. Most of the numbers were with the full band, and a full sound, but we were also treated to a couple of solo songs and with the band reduced to two. The variation in mood and tempo made for a varied and enjoyable night.

  • A wonderful show. She has a great voice plays a mean acoustic and electric guitar and her multinational band are hugely talented. The small and intimate venue is one of my favorites in DC. I have never seen a bad show there. As usual I was right at the front in my spot that I have placed in a state of permanent dibs.

  • Amazing intimate acoustic show exploring a great back catalogue & a couple of new songs. Fantastic voice and meaningful lyrics that tell great stories. Lot's of stories behind the songs and happy to take requests at the end as an encore.

  • Lovely voice, splendid songs and a good band behind her. Stage patter is non existent. Played for almost 90 minutes which was great value too. Venue was an absolute sweat box.

  • As usual the concert started super late at this venue but the beer is good and the staff cool. Plus it was way worth the waiting since Courtney Marie Andrews was amazing!
