Biografía

  • The Devil Makes Three is an American band formed in 2002 and currently consists of Pete Bernhard, Lucia Turino and Cooper McBean.

The Devil Makes Three formed in Santa Cruz and remain there to this date, their acoustic style is often described as Americana and blends various genres including bluegrass, country, folk and blues. They self released an eponymous album in 2002 but due lack of fan base or market, the album failed to chart. It did receive a re-release in 2007 after the band had taken time to tour and promote their music and it entered the US Grass charts at #7. They had recently signed with record label Milan who had seen their live album 'A Little Bit Faster and a Little Bit Worse' which impressed them so it was through their help that the debut achieved the chart position.

The next album 'Do Right Wrong' came in April 2009 and remains the band's highest chart position to date as it entered at #1 on the US Grass chart. In 2010 the band parted for a short time as Pete and Lucia relocated to their native Vermont while Cooper stayed in California, around the same time Cooper split from his current partner. A live album came in 2011 which debuted at #4 on the Grass chart, this was followed by the band's fourth original release 'I'm A Stranger Here' in 2013.

The fourth album peaked at #2 on the Grass chart and the US Heatseekers chart, their first appearance on the latter. It also appeared on the Indie and Folk chart, another first for the band. The band has toured across the world to promote this release and have appeared at numerous folk festivals.

  • When you watch The Devil Makes Three perform you can't help but feel happy and content. The music itself is upbeat and soothing and it makes you just want to listen and form your own impression of the music.

The venue itself is of an open stage in which the performers themselves stand extremely close to the edge and extremely close to one another. In this way they create a more welcoming and inviting atmosphere and one in which you don't feel uneasy about joining in.

During the performance the audience quietly listens and waits until the band is done performing a song before they clap and cheer loudly. This in a way shows how deep the lyrics are and how much these same lyrics make people think about their own thoughts and feelings during a live performance.

The Devil Makes Three is a band that doesn't move around a lot on stage, but they do dance in place and show that they are into the performance, but more then that it shows that they are more focused on how the song sounds and their execution rather then drawing to much attention to themselves. In between each song they try their best to interact with the audience and tell a little bit about themselves and what happened on their way to each performance helping to drive a deeper connection between them and the fans that came to see them. In performing their song "The Bullet" you can see just how much each song means to them and how important it is to them and that in itself makes me want to see them live.

Too often you see artist just write songs that they know will sell, but in the case of the The Devil Makes Three you don't see that at all and what you get with each song is lyrics that really reflect the thoughts and feelings of the artist themselves.

  • Fantastic Show!

One of the best I have ever seen. The Devil Makes Three put 300% into the show. They poured out all of their talent and gave us all the energy they could muster.

Bernhard's vocals were full of strength and passion while McBean changed instruments with almost every song, he is clearly a master of each. He was also able to instill confidence in the crowd with the words "Annoys Fascist" written across at least one of his banjos. Lucia picked, strummed or drew the bow across her dog house base like Jackson Pollock dripped paint, she too is a true master. Ten guitarist and violinist could not have replaced what she brought to the game.

I see no need for these folks to hang with the devil as the amount of heart and soul that they put into this show could make an angel cry.

Thank you to The Devil Makes Three for a great opportunity escape our world and live in theirs for a few hours.

Hopefully my beautiful and flirty young lady friend will be able to join me next time as she was the only thing I saw missing from this show.

  • My wife and I received tickets for XMAS from her daughter and son-in-law. After listening to several songs and watching on YOUTUBE we thought the concert would be great. NOT !!!

Very emotionless effort. Probably did not know what town they were even in. Very formulaic going from one uninspired song to the next. All 4 of us felt the same and left prior to the encore. So disappointing.

There was a very good crowd especially for a Tuesday and professionals should put a better effort to engage and entertain. Not a fan any longer. Too may inspired acts out there.

  • Always an incredibly fun show with The Devil Makes Three!

The first show of theirs I saw was a few years back when they opened for Yardog Road Show and even in that stripped down show they put out something special to all of us. It's a great thing when you can see the band laughing, smiling and just generally having a grand time doing what they love. It's clear to anyone attending one of their shows that these three love music, love playing and love sharing their sound with an audience.

If you have the chance and enjoy their sound, go see a show!

  • Great show! Red Rocks Was fantastic, as always, but hydrogen group put on an excellent show! We danced so much I'm sore today! TDMT sound exactly like they do on their recordings and they are all fantastic musicians. They also had a drummer and a fiddler on stage with them and that only added to their presence. They were excited to be headlining Red Rocks and they had fantastic energy. Shakey Graves was good as well. We missed the Wood Brothers, to my dismay. We have seen them three times this year and they always put on always excellent show.

  • DM3 did not disappoint. Great set, great energy. This has been the 5th time to see them and they bring something new to the table every time; whether it be guest musicians, deep catalog tracks, or just foot stomping fun! Worst part of the show for me is the venue. I go to HOB if a band comes that I want to see but I am just not a fan of the McDonald's of music venues.

Looking forward to seeing them again in Cleveland!

  • The Devil Makes Three adapts to location well. Whether it's Bonnaroo on a huge at high noon or in a dark cramped hell room in Atlanta venue they put on a active and heartfelt show. This one was a mix of fast and slow songs covers and old songs and didn't disappoint. A healthy 2 hours later they came down to hang out with the leftovers of the night. A truly great band and show!
