Biografía

  • Nils Frahm (born September 20th, 1982) is a German musician, hailing from Hamburg. He is known for the impressive versatility of his work, ranging from conventional instrumentation to electronic music.

Frahm is one of those musicians who feels like he’s been around for a lot longer than he actually has; it’s probably down, in no small part, to the fact that he’s been so influential, and that there were no real identifiable precursors to the sound that he’s made his own. He dabbles in both typical instrumentation and electronic textures, but most crucially, he often blends the two - to unique effect. His approach to his work has been consistent in its unconventional nature; he’s an accomplished classical pianist, but seldom demonstrates that in straightforward fashion.

Solo works like 2009’s ‘Wintermusik’ and ‘The Bells’ showcased his penchant for looping piano sounds and developing them into complex electronic soundscapes; he made his name with those two works, but would go on to both work exclusively with synthesizers - on his ‘Juno’ EP in 2011 - and collaborate with other artists; his 2013 release ‘Juno Reworked’ saw new takes on his ‘Juno’ material from the likes of Chris Clark and Luke Abbott. Frahm is a prolific remixer himself, having produced reworks for the likes of Mogwai, Peter Broderick and The Presets - it’s a testament to the way in which he’s managed to crossover from genre to genre.

  • Nils Frahm

Given Germany’s rich musical heritage when it comes to electronic music, it is no surprise to hear that Nils Frahm, a musician who is finding innovate ways to fuse electronic and classical music, is based in Berlin. Using a selection of vintage keyboards and synths he creates a mesmerizing soundscape that is unlike anything else you will hear live.

It would be easy to assume that Nils simply uses some nifty loops and just builds on them, which would still be an impressive feat. The real edge Nils has though is that he does it all live. With an unconventional playing style that utilises everything from an upright piano to a variety of drum machines and tape echoes, watching him create the sounds becomes as entertaining as listening to them. The sounds themselves can range from sparse, spacey grooves to Avant-garde piano odysseys that really demonstrate Nils’ virtuoso flair. It takes a real mastermind to innovate like Nils does and watching him up on stage with all his gear really is like watching a mad professor in his lab – it’s utterly compelling.

  • Nils Frahm creates such beautiful, emotional, mesmeric music. This was an amazing two hour plus performance. The audience was completely enthralled; the only live music event I've ever been to where people whispered their orders at the bar! There was a hush of expectation throughout. A good mix of early and latest works, taking in some of the more recent dance driven rhythms from All Melody and the melancholy beauty of Felt. Frahm is a witty, warm and quirky performer; energetic, involved. He also had choice words about venue owners O2. Musically, he makes gorgeous soundscapes. The show culminated in the euphoric Says, his signature live set piece from Spaces...followed by a spell-binding 20 minute encore, taking in the grand piano, toilet brushes and and an extended, climactic More. All leaving the audience willing Frahm to keep on going. An incredible evening. I wonder if anyone did get signed copies from the back of his van!

  • A night to remember.

What a fantastic performance, Nils Frahm put in. I had purchased two tickets back on September 2018 as I have been waiting a while to see Nils live. My partner decided she did not want to attend the concert so I invited a friend who had never listened to Nils Music (which he did once I asked him to come along) and we were both in attendance.

The compositions and arrangements were beautiful and the whole performance was incredible. Nils painted a beautiful and intricate musical landscape with his compositions and my friend was well impressed and glad he had come along with me. I also was fair blown out having being involved on a hobby level with electronic music and synthesizers since the mid sixties, this is a nice and unique interpretation of the instruments along with all the other keyboards Nils had. Cannot wait till he comes back to Glasgow again.

  • I was so happy that I got to see Nils Frahm perform live at San Francisco's The Warfield in 2019.

His studio album compositions are obviously excellently produced but also often melancholic and almost perfectly suited for rainy, cold, and quiet days. I was therefore very curious how this would sound live and whether I would enjoy his music in a concert setting.

He exceeded all my expectations—watching him masterfully transition from one instrument to another, creating a meditative and intoxicating sonic landscape, felt like watching the most skilled and talented painter create a masterpiece. The trademark wistfulness in his music was still noticeable, but the show did not feel sad or tiring. It very much felt like musical healing.

  • A solo act - one man and many keyboards - Nils Frahm was fully engaging, constantly in motion, tweaking his sound and adding parts. Each piece felt like a journey, building, ebbing, digressing, often reaching dramatic heights. He sprinkled the set with several solo piano pieces that were quite lovely - the Toronto audience doing its very best to keep quiet, a testament to their appreciation of his artistry. Both melodic and strongly rhythmic, this was a wonderful show that I can’t recommend highly enough to any music lover. An added bonus was Frahm’s charmimg and humorous stage banter. I would go again in a heartbeat, don’t miss him when he stops in your city!

  • Nils Frahm rocked it tonight! Sublime!

Music is the salve of the mentally anguished, the emotionally wounded, and the existentially conflicted. If I were to become a stone, unfeeling and nonspeaking, may I at least keep my ears. Rend my flesh with worms and decay, leach my bones into pulp, but keep my ears. Music is the last breath of existence I wish to be before I am oblivion.

To Nils Frahm for the inspiration!

  • Nils Frahm's performance was beyond my expectation. I've never watched such a smooth, intensive and touching concert in my entire life. Can't believe I saw this in Shanghai (I've always thought I have to go to Europe to see his show). My bf who has little understanding of piano also thought highly of the concert. If you wanna know what is the power of music, go to see Nils Frahm, you won't be disappointed.

  • I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this show, but Nils Frahm didn't disappoint. The venue was acoustically awesome, the sound system was equally awesome and the music just blew us away.

Plus Nils Frahm himself was an engaging and friendly artist. His interaction with the audience was self-deprecating, unpretentious and very human.

Great show. Want to see him again, and again.

  • Fantastic music! And what a nice, humble and caring artist: his interjection between songs were witty and hilarious and he was there at the end of the show to sign an autograph and speak (actually more listen...) to all the fans. Great guy!

Show was great but could be much better in a different venue (e.g. park, philharmonie) as standing got a bit tiresome

  • Without a doubt one of the best shows I've ever seen. The music was beautiful and innovative while Nils himself was cute, charming, and engaging. The two hours just flew by. I will be seeing him every time he comes to LA. If you are lucky enough to have him come to your area, you should definitely go!
