  • Peace

There’s something special about seeing Peace live but there’s something even more special about seeing Peace live in Birmingham. With a near sell-out crowd, Peace came home to the O2 Academy in Birmingham for the last date of their UK tour and showed how they rightfully are the leaders of ‘B-Town’; not just part of the fad though – they are here to stay. Up first were Superfood; Birmingham favourites. Who else could Peace have chosen? It’s like they had unfinished business since they had to pull out of when Peace’s last tour visited Birmingham. Earlier this year the band were untraceable online but 4 tracks later it’s clear the word’s got around. A Britpop-infused set filled with catchy choruses, strong riffs and driving drums which the ever-growing crowd were increasingly being captivated by. Ending things with the self-titled crowd-pleaser ‘Superfood’ the crowd began to move and shout along with the anthemic line “you’re always hungry”. Keep your eye on these guys as they’re going to get even bigger in 2014. Carrying things on were Drenge who as soon as they stepped on stage caused the Academy to completely change atmosphere with the immediate surge forward of the crowd. Beginning with ‘Gun Crazy’ it was soon clear that this set was going to get sweaty. Everything soon turned into chaos – as expected – when the Loveless brothers reached ‘Bloodsports’ with no-one being able to stand straight or still. Soon things did slow when there was an outbreak of “this song is a fuckabout” from Eoin Loveless leaving everyone time to have a quick breather before the raw and untamed chaos returned. The dreaded end of their set soon came upon everyone with the opening riff of ‘Face Like A Skull’ sounding out leaving everyone one last opportunity to make this the best date for Drenge yet – which it of course was. The dimming of lights signalled for the whole venue to erupt with screams and shouts for the homecoming of Peace. ‘Waste of Paint’ quickly made everyone relive the madness again and got even the seated part of the audience to get on their feet with the punching riffs and enduring vocals which no-one could help but sing (but mostly shout) along with. ‘Follow Baby’ and ‘Higher Than The Sun’ followed keeping up with nostalgic anthems we’re all familiar with but leaving a more gritty aftertaste with the crowd. With mosh-pits breaking out everywhere even during the likes of ‘Float Forever’ Harrison Koisser was right to say “it feels very Friday night in here.” We even got a little insight into the next ventures of the Worcester 4-piece with new track ‘Money’ which is something to get excited about; next year things will get even better for Peace. Closing the main set off with ‘1998 (Delicious)’ which has become pretty notorious for getting messy; Peace’s Binary Finary cover of 10 minutes of pure genius is the anthem we all want to hear live. Expectations and anticipation were high as the gradual build up packed full of hushed riffs and bass lines played out; this song is just waiting for people to kick off when it reaches its climax. The release of a confetti canon gave everyone the go-ahead to get lost in the whole atmosphere; falling confetti and a room full of sweat is not a good mix. No-one wanted Peace to leave; the shouting of “if you’re happy and you know it clap your hands” and the repetitive outcry of “Peace” left the guys only off stage for what seemed like seconds. Swiftly going into the slow and gentle ‘California Daze’ everyone got a little break until realising what was coming next. Peace have become well known for their covers such as ‘White Noise’ and last Christmas’ mash-up of ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ and ‘Creep’. This year we got a beautiful rendition of ‘Last Christmas’ by Wham! which with only 12 days left till Christmas fitted perfectly with members of the audience draping themselves in tinsel and lights. The closer was ‘Bloodshake’ which since its origins as ‘Bblood’ has been what we’ve known Peace for; the instantly recognisable opening riff and chorus of “we spit blood at the sun, we spit blood at the ocean” got the crowd using up the little energy they had left out to let the gig finish on a high. You can’t fault Peace live. There’s no need to worry about the future of Peace as they’ve made it clear they’re here to stay and here to stay for a while.

  • The Assembly in Leamington Spa may have seemed like an odd choice of venue to many Peace fans when the band announced their UK tour in early 2014. "Why not just play Birmingham?" was the cry of many in the Midlands area. But it turned out that the venue was perfect for Peace; small enough that everybody could see the band, and big enough that the sound system was good and that there was enough people to get some excellent raving going. From early on I could tell it was going to be a good gig; the crowd was mainly made up of people in their teens and early 20s, so they would be sure to have plenty of energy to jump, mosh and sing along for an hour. The support act showed I was right with that theory as the audience went crazy for them, despite not knowing most of their songs. But when the lights went down to indicate that Peace were about to enter stage, the crowd went insane: cheering, clapping and even some screaming for a couple of minutes until they started their opening song "Follow Baby." As soon as the amazingly exciting guitar riff started, the crowd went mad and it was soon impossible to be in the middle of the standing area and stand still for more than 2 seconds. During the incredibly catchy chorus, I doubt there was anyone not singing along, the atmosphere was just compelling. Peace moved swiftly to their next song, the great sing-a-long that is "Money," and continued through their well-chosen set list, which mainly included songs off their debut album but also three new songs. Throughout the set the audience were brilliant, never seeming to lose their energy and keeping the moving about and moshing going strong. Even in slower songs like "California Daze" and "Float Forever" the constant pushing, jumping and just general raving didn't stop. A highlight of the gig was definitely "Lovesick." The crowd cheered as Harrison Koisser announced the name of the song and everybody sung in unison during pretty much the whole thing. The set ended with a bang with the mosh-pit-worthy "Bloodshake," which saw the biggest mosh pit of the whole gig after a dramatic build up to the ending of the song, which finished the gig on a definite high. The band were brilliant. They sounded great, looked great (especially Harrison’s orange hair) and played a thoroughly exciting and entertaining hours’ worth of songs. All this for just £15 was truly amazing. When they next tour I will almost certainly be buying tickets, and would definitely recommend seeing them live to anyone. I left the gig with a hoarse voice, aching legs and sweat all over me: all good signs of a brilliant gig.

  • Thursday 14th June. New Slang @Hippodrome, Kingston. Peace. Tonight’s is young English indie rock band Peace. Whilst probably not sitting in the targeted demographic these two fifty somethings rock on down to the local nightclub to join the youngsters at this showcase gig promoting their new album ‘Kindness is the new rock n roll’.

Raising the average age by probably thirty years we take our position a respectable distance from the stage to the side. Opening the set with ‘1998’ an obscure Binary Finary cover it sounds like they have found their inner Pink Floyd with their prog rock driving jam. Three albums in their playing has matured and after a few tech glitches at the start they relax into what they know best. Catchy indie hook laden rock.

Indie has taken a bit of a hit recently with a lot of sub-par bands leading the charge but I think Peace are heading the new attack. Think the Kooks or Razorlight but good. The songs tonight are catchy with great hooks and the young crowd loved it.

The mosh pits tonight was energetic but polite. We and the few other ‘oldies’ held back from joining it, not because we didn’t have the energy but probably because our significant weight advantage may have resulted in some serious injuries for the little ones.

The new songs sounded strong and the choice tracks from the first two albums sounded great too. ‘Lovesick’ with its catchy chorus and particularly ‘Bloodshake’ with its Vampire Weekendesque riff and staccato guitar were excellent.

A good night out with a band who clearly have a little bit more about them than some of those tagged with the same label at the moment.

    Keep on rockin y’all

  • Where to start? Well I'll begin with it was absolutely brilliant, surreal, flawless.

The gig had everything you'd want crowd interaction, great staging and lights that made you hear the songs in a whole new way. Having seen Peace twice before this I must say this was the best of them all as you could see they were adjusting to the world of performing to FANS and by fans I mean hardcore, over excited teenagers that had an odd love for mosh pits and human dominoes. I must admit I was not a fan of getting hit from every direction so I stood further from the front than I wished to but that didn't matter because unlike other gigs I'd been to even if I was at the very back of the venue I still felt connected. If you're questioning whether to or not to watch peace just do because I guarentee they give you the 360.

  • Such a good vibe. They played the classics from In love, and new songs from Happy People. Just as good live if not better, has to be one of the best gigs I've ever been to
