Biografie

  • Midge Ure is a guitarist and singer-songwriter hailing from Lanarkshire, Scotland who was born on October 10th 1953. He is best known as the frontman of Ultravox, and also co-wrote the charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” with Bob Geldof, while also fronting a succesful solo career.

Born James Ure to a working class family in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland, Midge Ure formed his first band in Glasgow when he was sixteen years old, singing lead vocals in a band called Stumble. They weren’t to last and the group folded in 1971, but they were crucial getting the young Midge (at the time going under the slightly more reasonable name Jim) into Glasgow’s thriving music scene. His first taste of real success would come after he joined the band Salvation in 1972 as a rhythm guitarist, however as there was already a Jim in that band, and seniority taking precedence as it does, Ure was forced to change his name. Stuck for choice, the other Jim simply took Ure’s first name and reversed it, and the moniker he’d perform under for the rest of his career was born.

In 1974, Salvation’s lead singer left the band, and since Ure was the only other member with any experience singing lead vocals, the job fell to him just as they changed their name to Silk, and started working with the Bay City Rollers’ songwriters. Although Ure arguably missed a trick by turning down an offer from Malcolm McLaren to front some bunch of no-hopers called the Sex Pistols, the band scored a number one single in their home land with 1976’s “Forever And Ever”. However, Silk’s boyband image was starting to look ridiculous thanks to the rising punk rock movement, and despite an attempt from the band to adapt to the times, Ure left the band in 1977. After that, Ure worked as a jobbing guitarist, first for Glen Matlock’s Rich Kids, then Steve Strange’s Visage, and he even enjoyed a brief stint playing in Thin Lizzy. However, Ure’s fortunes changed in 1980, when he joined the band Ultravox, the main project of Billy Currie, who Ure had met while playing in Visage.

Ultravox were all but dead before Ure joined, having been going on since 1973 under different names and with another frontman, but Ure revitalised the band. By 1981 they had scored a number 2 hit single in the form of “Vienna”, a track that would go on to be the fifth best-selling single in the U.K of that whole year. The band spent the early to mid-1980s as one of the biggest New Wave bands in the U.K, constantly scoring huge hit singles and albums, but after the Band Aid project in 1984, the band went on hiatus and Ure began a solo career in 1985. It was an immediate success, with Ure scoring a number one single right off the bat in the form of his debut solo single “The Gift”. In light of this Ultravox split in 1987 and Ure focused on his solo career, which is going strong to this very day. For being one of the biggest names in British music throughout the 1980’s, and then continuing that success with a solo career that well and truly lives up to his golden years, Midge Ure comes highly recommended.

  • Midge Ure's Band Electronica

The show last night was fantastic. There were 5 bands and Midge only played 5 songs, but he was great! The other bands on the "Retro Futura" tour were Katrina (Katrina & The Waves), China Crisis, Howard Jones and Tom Baily (Thompson Twins). Everyone was great, but for me it was Midge all the way, but he is my favorite after all. He sounded great and put on a great show. He was the 3rd of the 5 acts to go on and after he finished, as a surprise bonus, he, China Crisis and Katrina were available for signing and meet & greet. That was the absolute BEST! I actually got to meet him, chat for a moment, discuss his upcoming tour in January (yay!) and take a photo with him! Are you kidding me???? And he couldn't have been nicer or more gracious! I just wished I'd known so I could've brought some cd covers for him to sign. His set list consisted of The Hymn, Fade to Grey (no I'm not kidding), Vienna (so, so awesome!), If I Was and Dancing With Tears in My Eyes. Don't miss this tour! All acts were great! So glad I went!

  • Many people know the musician James Ure as the accompanying co-writer to Bob Geldof's charity single 'Do They Know it's Christmas?' and organiser of Band Aid and Live 8. Although his charity is a huge part of his life, he is also an incredibly successful musician having played as part of Slik, Thin Lizzy, Rich Kids, and Visage. Now touring as a soloist, the man commands a loyal fanbase for his tours which are constantly developing and changing in order to showcase the regular new stuff.

He has a great backing band behind him who know the material equally well yet James is the real frontman of the operation constantly throwing himself into tracks and getting up close and personal with the crowds. They appreciate this immensely and it makes singalongs to 'If I Was' and 'No Regrets' even more momentous. Many people write off Midge Ure as a product of the 80s yet he is an intelligent musician who has been reacting to the industry for years and releasing high quality albums so go check out the tours if you are on the fence.

  • Me and the wife have seen midge about 15 times now, 1st time solo back in the barrowlands in 1985 wen my wife was 6months pregnant with our 1st child who is 34 in jan2020, seen electronica back with midge 1st time in Motherwell about 2011, Cole and joe were a bit nervous with the crowd that night but 8yrs on after seeing these guys perform a set before midge,s show and then with midge these 2 guys are simply brilliant, fantastic musicians and very talented guys, the show last night was superb and a nice wee touch from rusty Egan who had the sell out crowd in stitches of laughter and great to see him play drums and backing vocals to some brilliant visage tunes, a great night and will be in perth in February to see this great gig all over again

  • Was lucky enough to see Midge in concert at the Triffid in Brisbane. He may have lost a bit of hair, but he's lost none of his voice. Stage performance was excellent and the support provided by the simplicity of Cole and Joe from the India Electric Company brought the music back to the basics. Just guitar, violin, mandolin (i think) and the occasional keyboard topped off by Midges voice. Also lots of stories and history.

There was a great range of songs including the mighty Vienna, Reap the Wild Wind, The Gift and Fade to Grey.

Thanks to sonkinck for reminding me to go see a great concert and have a really grat night out..

  • Personable man. Incredible performance. Even better human being. He's raised how many hundreds of millions for charity? He's been knighted by the Queen of England, charted hits around the world for four decades. And --- Fifty people showed up last night. He played in front of a huge crowd in Denton, Tex. two nights ago in a suburb of Dallas 30 minutes from downtown. I was embarrassed for New Orleans. Oh well; more opportunity for the fans to get best seats and interact with this musical LEGEND. NOLA, we can do better. A $22 ticket. Come on and support!

  • The show started with an excellent performance by India electric co, Who then accompanied the superb performance by Midge Ure. Songs from the breathe album and oddities that were not on the album, as he described, were performed brilliantly by all 3 artists. The highlight for me was the rendition of Vienna, midges superb voice with the excellent musical talents of India electric co made the night. Thanks for a superb evening..

  • I waited over 30 years to see Midge Ure and I was not disappointed. He played a number of hits, plus Ultravox and lesser known tracks. His band was superb! His voice was in top form! He is an excellent guitar player and songwriter. I just wished his set was longer but he was co-headlining with Paul Young so they had to play the same amount of time. I enjoyed the show immensely!

  • Midge Ure presented an honest and upbeat performance, with a few newer songs, and several nice surprises from Ultravox, including "Passing Strangers" and "All Stood Still." He also performed the seminal New Wave classic, which he wrote for Visage, "Fade to Grey." His voice is still amazing. He joked about how we wanted to see him, rather than Mickey Mouse or Harry Potter.

  • As always, the show was great. The more intimate venue and Midge Ure's easy banter with the audience adds to the pleasure of his music and his excellent voice. Most of the songs were from Ultravox -- it was a wonderful trip back in time, and the energy was up-to-date modern.

A pleasant and uplifting evening indeed. Thank you Midge Ure! Please come back soon.

  • Midge and Electronica were excellent and should have been the headliners instead of Human League .

Human League were abysmal and should now be put out to pasture .

From Phils'monotone droning to the shambolic backing singers/dancers (who should be taken to said pasture and put out of their obvious discomfort)

Needless to say we left early.
