Son Lux is an American musician based in New York City, New York, United States who was born in 1979. He is known for his atmospheric mix of post-rock and alternative hip-hop and for his work arranging films like Looper and The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby.
Born in Denver, Colorado, Ryan Lutt might just be one of the most musical musicians whose music can still vaguely be described as pop music. After all, how many artists in today’s charts count themselves as classically trained composers? From an early age, Lutt was set on becoming a composer, even despite the fact that he hated the piano lessons that his family forced on him from the age of six. By 12 he knew what he wanted to be, but even by that point he’d diversified and was playing the drums and guitar in numerous punk bands, all the while learning the structure of jazz and pop songs during his piano lessons.
He studied composition at Indiana University and during his time there he had his first experience composing for a visual medium, writing music to complement the choreography of a dance student who would later become his wife. After university, he continued writing for several different kinds of visual medium and in 2007, found a steady job in New York City, New York composing the music for commercials. While working, he also spent time collecting samples of anything that interested him, from two note fragments to whole segments of spoken words or music. He started setting these samples to music, creating lush, atmospheric soundscapes and three years after he started his job, he’d created his first album as Son Lux, “At War With Walls And Mazes”.
The album was rapturously received by everyone from Pitchfork to XLR8R and by 2012, the year after he released his follow up album “We Are Rising”, he was creating his own music full time. He’s worked with everyone from Sufjan Stevens and Arcade Fire to These New Puritans and Nico Muhly, as accepted by the world of indie rock as he is by the world of modern classical music. His albums continue to be raved about critically and after signing to Joyful Noise Records in 2013, and then signing again to Glassnote the year afterwards, he edges towards commercial success with every release as well. He’s an artist in the truest sense of the word, and he comes highly recommended.

I love watching his live sets. They are very simple in terms of staging, but that allows complete attention on the music instead. The stage is set up so that the drummer, synth/technology and guitarist are standing side-by-side, separate by darkness because of the dimmed lights. The spotlight highlights each person, and with “Alternate World” having such a dark tone to it, makes a perfect atmospheric matchup. Watching each of the musicians play is really something else. They are so lost in what they are doing; yet completely feeding off of one another. On top of that, as Son Lux sings, he has so much emotion behind the vocals that you feel the songs reach inside of you, releasing a heightened sense of emotion. The simplicity of the simplicity of the show, coupled with the complexity of the layered, multi-dimensional dynamics of the music are a contrast of true artistry. Definitely a show worth checking out.
Son Lux is a genius. If you're reading this, you (should) know this. His frail voice, his stuttering rhythms, his range of sounds--he is truly unique. He also has two amazing musicians: a phenomenal drummer and a great guitar player. The result, predictably, is an unbelievable show.
He played quite a few songs from his last album, as one would expect. I would have liked some more from At War with Walls and Mazes, his greatest album by far. But it was still a great show--moving and danceable and totally worth it.
BTW< one of the warmup acts was a man named Sm dew--I had never heard of him. That guy is seriously good: r&b inspired songs with brilliant electronics and percussion. This man will go far, and I am very glad I discovered him.
Had the pleasure of seeing Son Lux perform at the Bowery Ballroom on 6/9/15. One word...WOW!!! The music was phenomenal and the energy was amazing. The songs performed from the new album Bones were great. "Your Day Will Come" is definitely my favorite off the new album. Ian is mesmerizing - one of the best drummers I've seen (and I've seen a lot). Rafiq is so versatile and never misses a beat...even with a sudden guitar change. Ryan's voice is hypnotic and evokes so much feeling and emotion.

These guys are amazingly talented! The way they are able to build their complicated and heavily layered songs live is really incredible. If you are a Son Lux fan you definitely need to go see them live! If you like music that is complicated and layered and has lots of cool things happening and/or just like live music that is performed by incredible musicians then you should also go see these guys! Fantastic show!
Hands down the best modern electro rock trio touring! These guys bring an eclectic ensemble of effects matched with raw talent for each of their respective instruments. Ryan Lott channels Thom Yorke like control over his voice with attention to vocal subtle and mic volume control.
Radiohead fans if you want to experience a similar dynamism in music art and sound control this is your show!
Son Lux’s sound is not only powerful but it was beautiful music. It was an amazing and perfectly executed performance. You can see they worked really hard on rehearsing their set. All of the musicians, the guitarist, the drummer, and the vocalist, were so passionate performing separately and together they were strong. Just an awesome trio of musicians. I would absolutely see them again.

In my opinion this concert was great. I think that show was the best concert ever!!! Im very happy that I was on that awesome perfomance. I hope that SON LUX will come back to Poland soon :D. I love them <3
