Carnifex are an American deathcore band, signed to Nuclear Blast and hailing from San Diego, California. They formed in 2005.
Taking their name from the Old English Latin word for ‘executioner’, Carnifex wear their death metal influences pretty firmly on their collective sleeve. Their current lineup currently comprises just two original members - frontman Scott Lewis and drummer Shawn Cameron - as well as rhythm guitarist Cory Arford, bassist Fred Calderon and lead guitar player Jordan Lockrey. They formed in Fallbrook, California, and went onto release their debut album, ‘Dead in My Arms’, in July 2007.
That album sold over five thousand copies, despite enjoying no real widespread publicity, and that achievement in itself was enough to gain them a three-record deal with Victory Records, who would go on to put out ‘The Diseased and the Poisoned’ in 2008, ‘Hell Chose Me’ in 2010, and ‘Until I Feel Nothing’ a year later, in October of 2011. Musically, they’ve adhered pretty close to the deathcore crossover sound that characterized their early work, which in turn lends a genuine intensity to their live shows; they were part of the Never Say Die! tour in Europe in 2013. In 2014, they released their fifth studio album, and their first on the legendary Nuclear Blast - ‘Die Without Hope’. Signing to a label so important within their own genre is clear evidence of Carnifex’s current upwards trajectory.
Mehr erfahrenYou cannot fault Carnifex for their insane guitar riffs and ability to head bang for a ridiculous amount of time, it must take a lot of work and incredibly strong neck muscles. However this band to me sounds just like every other death core style band, as it's impossible to hear their lyrics and I don't really consider it singing when they scream so loud and high pitched that only dogs can hear them. But this band originally formed in 2005 and has more recently signed to Nuclear Blast, previous to that they were signed to Victory Records. The group has managed to release 5 full albums, which is pretty impressive. Although my view is pretty biased because I'm not really a fan of this genre of music, I do have a massive appreciation for this group as their performances are well thought out and you can tell they give it everything they have. The bands second album 'The Diseased and the Poisoned' reached number 19 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and since that they managed to tour over 22 countries with bands like Unleashed and Darkest Hour. I can't help but be negative about these kinds of groups though, but after all that is what their lyrics are all based on, negativity. Their first album was actually all about self-harm and heartbreak. For people who want to hear about these subjects and like this genre of music, this band is up there with the best of them from what I can tell. They know how to get a good mosh pit going in a crowd and how to get everyone riled up with them, but they're not for everyone.
With a name that derives from the Latin word for butcher or executioner and a sound that is deeply rooted in the intense genre of deathcore, it is fair to say a Carnifex show is not for everyone. In fact you have to be pretty dedicated to this San Diego band's music and mentality before stepping into the twisted world of their live performance. As the venue basks in an eerie red and black glow, the group files onto stage and the whole crowd erupts. It is clear that the majority present are dedicated fans who have been listening to Carnifex throughout their decade long career.
From the first instrumentals, the whole room begins to surge towards the stage as the quintet remain partially entranced in their instrumentals. As the percussion kicks in they begin to wildly head bang, long hair flying everywhere whilst the crowd mimic the actions. Scott Lewis leers at the audience and orders them to give their all throughout the short but severe setlist. There is moshing during 'Dark Days' whilst intense solos lead up to 'Hell Chose Me' and the whole room chants back the chorus at huge volumes.
The Decade of Despair Tour. Carnifex has been around now for 10 years and hasn't lost any of their fire at all. Upon going to the show, I had been listening to them for a number of years. The opening bands such as Lorna Shore, The Last Ten Seconds Of Life and Within The Ruins really set off the show. I was fairly disappointed in hearing Black Tongue had been removed from the first half of the tour. But nonetheless, these bands stepped it up and made us lose our minds.
As for my negative about the show, the set lists were very short. Great bands only got to play maybe 4 songs at most. But Carnifex dished out a total of about 10 which is absolutely fine being the headliner but I believe some really great bands didn't have enough time to really shine and show us how hard they can throw down.
All in all, great show, great bands and Carnifex can kill any city they step in.
SUPER SAD THAT THE SHOW GOT POSTPONED! STILL NO NEW DATE :( I WAS SOO LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SHOW. I HOPE THEY GIVE A NEW DATE SOON AND I CAN GET THAT TIME OFF. IVE BEEN WANTING TO SEE THEM FOR YEARS!!
I missed Carnifex's show last year in the Cabaret Sauvage but this year I don't! And it was a great show! Good atmosphere and the band was really friendly to the public! Thanks guys!
