Paul Kalkbrenner (11 June 1977) is an electronic music producer from Berlin, Germany that is known for his unique take on downbeat and techno music.
Paul Kalkbrenner became interested in music, especially techno music, at a young age and by the time he was 13 years old he was playing records at clubs around Berlin. At school he studied musical theory as well as learned how to play the trumpet. Right after school Kalkbrenner worked a job in the television industry so he could earn money to buy musical equipment. Once he was able to fund his basic equipment he started writing and performing his own music with one of his best friends, Sascha Funke.
When the electronic music producer Ellen Allien heard Kalkbrenner playing his music at a party she introduced herself to him and later signed him to her record label BPitch Control. Kalkbrenner released his first EP under the record label in 1999, which was labeled “Friedrichshain” and released it under his alias, Paul dB . After releasing some singles under the Paul dB alias he released his first full length album, “Superimpose” under his real name. The same year he released his debut album he also released his second studio album “Zeit”. The album contained many of the thumping bass lines and punchy drum rhythms that techno music is known for, but it also contained instances of ethereal sounding synths that created a nice ambience.
After Kalkbrenner released his third studio album “Self” in 2004 he was approached by the film director, Hannes Stohr, who asked him to create the soundtrack for his film, “Berlin Calling”. Stohr later came to the conclusion that Kalkbrenner would also be perfect for the leading role in the film and Kalkbrenner accepted the opportunity for his first film role. The film was a success and demonstrated Kalkbrenner’s talent at acting. The soundtrack to “Berlin Calling” was also immensely successful partly due to the wildly popular single “Sky and Sand”, which ended up going platinum and reaching to the top of the charts.
After the success of “Berlin Calling”, Kalkbrenner decided to part ways with BPitch Control and create his own record label, Paul Kalkbrenner Musik, as a platform to release his music. “Icke Wieder”, which was released in 2011 was his first record to come out on the label and was highly successful reaching the No. 2 spot on the German music charts as well as reaching gold status. In 2012 Kalkbrenner released the album “Guten Tag”, which topped the charts in both Switzerland and Germany.
Kalkbrenner is considered to be a live musical act as opposed to a DJ because he breaks down his tracks as they are presented on stage. In 2010 Kalkbrenner embarked on a 12 city tour where he sold out most of the dates and he documented the experience in a film called “Paul Kalkbrenner 2010 – A Live Documentary”. Paul Kalkbrenner has also spoken at events like the International Music Summit, which is an EDM conference that takes place in Ibiza, Spain.

This is the kind of show that Paul brings when he performs live. I was on the dance floor when Paul came out, he did not look unusual or anything. He had a plain black shirt on and a clean shaven face. He shouted Are you ready? to us and all us were clapping and dancing right away.
He started off the set in a huge way, getting the lights and disco balls really going with his song 'Sky and Sand'. This song may not have any lyrics but the beats were what you could dance to all night long. Paul was promoting his newest album 'Guten Tag' during this time and since 'Sky and Sand' was a little older and not on the album I figured he wanted to get it out of the way before he started his newer music. Paul kept the beat going all night long.
There were people jumping and dancing and I personally was so hot and exhausted at the end of the show I knew I had to get out of the club. This was all worth it though, Paul knows how to fill everyone in the crowd with energy and life and he did just that.
Producer of electronic musician Paul Kalkbrenner is another example of as to why Germany is so esteemed when it comes to its exportation of techno, electronica and dance. He is a staple appearance at some of the world's most iconic dance events and festival and he is always assured to bring an ethereal, twisted show to the adoring crowds.
Often playing late at night, these settings suit the music well and as the crowd make their way into Paul's smoky, luminous tent it feels as though you are descended into a surrealistic wonderland. The beats are repetitive and pulsing as they rise up through the feet of the audience and keeps the whole audience moving intently. He has timed the whole show perfectly in order to maximise the danceability of his show whilst also having chance to demonstrate some of the darker techno mixes found on the likes of 'Maximalive'. There is of course large cheers for his European hit 'Sky And Sand' yet the show as a whole will be what leaves crowds excitedly discussing afterwards.
W O W. With the risk of sounding like a crazy person, this was by far the most amazing musical event of a solo artist that I have ever attended. Having been a fan of Paul Kalkbrenner for so many years, seeing him live had been on my wishlist for a long time. It was worth the wait, as he exceeded my every expectation.
To say that I always enjoyed his music would be an understatement. What he can do and make you feel with his music's vibrations is out of this world. To me, he is the only artist that can do that. I might be biased and subjective, but I am grateful I got to experience this live.
I definitely recommend attending a PK concert to anyone - it's really something else.
I missed a work event to see Paul Kalkbrenner playing. I have paid over £90 for the ticket, went all the way to east London, have been waiting there for the whole day for his performance there (I should say that I generally don’t like electronic music and he is the only reason I bought ticket for the festival) and he didn’t play in the end!!! I was extremely disappointed and felt like my time and money were completely wasted.

Audience waited for a long time (21-0:30), 2 DJ-s played before (not good at all) but the wait was worth it.
Very good Vibes. Service at Halle 622 was very friendly but a bit chaotic, very long time waiting for entrance, what was very confusing... and for drinks (min. 30 Min. in a cube) so many Place to improve...

Good lights , good selection of tunes , great Paul , mixed crowd , TERRIBLE SOUND . Clearly no sound engineer was paying attention ?!

Awesome! Good venue, powerful sound. But i wish they would have let me out and back! A bit long to be stuck in here for twelve hours. I came early because i didnt know the line-up order before i get there. Searched everywhere but couldn't find the info.
Great Music and concert.
Unfortunately it seemed like Paul was quite tired and the power and energy wasn't really there.
Also useful to know is that he mostly played his popular songs and did not perform a lot of live mixing.
Great Music, great Sound quality and great Lightshow. He started and ended his show with all his songs that you would expect to hear and in the meantime he played many songs from his new album. Can't wait to see him live again.
Paul Kalkbrenner itself was great but the context of this kind of festival is to avoid. Food and drinks are terrible and too expensive, unacceptable for a 10-hours live music event. Better to go and see him in Germany.
