Biografie

  • Having burst out of San Fransisco, California, US in the early ‘80s, Dead Kennedys went on to become one of America’s most successful punk bands with their uncompromising sound and vitriolic political satire.

Formed in 1978 by Jello Biafra (vocals), Klaus Flouride (bass), Bruce Slesinger a.k.a Ted (drums) and East Bay Ray (guitars), the Dead Kennedys became a household name in the local scene, through relentless performances in the Bay Area. An early independently-released single, “California Über Alles” displayed their visceral political angst, attacking the then governor, Jerry Brown. Equally biting, “Holiday in Cambodia” followed, as a stinging attack on the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Dead Kennedys had become an underground sensation both in the US and UK, with their debut album, “Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables” finding a strong following upon its release in 1980.

Ted left the band after the album release, replaced by Darren H. Peligro, with the Kennedys also creating their own label, Alternative Tentacles during this time (1981). Their first release on the label, the EP, “In God We Trust,” featured the controversial single, “Too Drunk to Fuck” which broke into the UK Top 40 despite being banned from airplay. A second full-length, “Plastic Surgery Disasters” followed after, with Alternative Tentacles quickly becoming a respected label in the punk scene.

Returning with their third album in 1985, “Frankenchrist,” the Dead Kennedy’s found themselves at the centre of an obscenity lawsuit, charged with distributing pornography to minors due to H.R. Giger’s album artwork of garish illustrations of penises and anuses. The case was eventually dismissed, with Biafra becoming a prominent voice for the advocacy of free speech.

Despite the court victory, the Dead Kennedys were unable ensure the band’s longevity, with 1986’s “Bedtime for Democracy” being their last official release. A posthumous compilation, “Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death appeared a year later, signalling the end of the Dead Kennedys burgeoning career.

However, after a long period of solo ventures, the band did decide to reunite in 2001, for a select number of live performances. Whilst without Biafra, the band went on to find a new energy, embarking on various global tours since, helping to continue the popularity of one of the nation’s most successful punk bands.

  • You would be hard pressed to find a band as iconic and revered in the punk scene as Dead Kennedys. Jello Biafra and the boys have been playing their unique politically driven style of punk since the late 70's, taking a long hiatus from 1986-2000 while members moved on to their own projects, such as Jello Biafras Guantanamo School of Medicine.

The Kennedys play huge (for the punk genre) crowds of ballistically wound up punks, some of which have been attending these shows since inception in the late 70's. The variety of people in the crowd is awe inspiring, and Jello's warbling voice has been speaking to the youth for decades. The atmosphere is electric whenever they take the stage.

Their first song at the show I saw was California Uber Alles -- one of their most adored and iconic songs. They played through tons of hits from Holiday in Cambodia, Bedtime for Democracy, and Frankenchrist. The ingrained "DK" logo was on shirts and leather jackets throughout the crowd, as one of the most recognized punk logos in history.

By the end of the surprisingly informal and personal show, right up next to the stage with the band, I was hoarse and drenched in sweat. I still remember the thriving mosh pit and passionate performance put on, even though it's been nearly 15 years since that night. The guys are getting old, and haven't played a show since 2010. It's rumored that they will come back for a series of short shows in the next few years, so keep a keen ear out and don't miss one of the most brash and wonderful bands the punk genre has ever witnessed.

  • I went into this concert a little anxious, this would have been my first Dead Kennedys concert and I had no idea what to expect given Jello no longer does vocals. First off I wasn't too keen on Catholic Action, they were quite an odd choice to go with in my opinion, but as soon as Dead Kennedys came on Skip and the rest absolutely blew it out of the park.

When Skip wasn't singing or prancing/dancing along the stage he was pissing off the crowd. Going on about football v soccer, Brexit, Boris Johnson, a doctors appointment he had recently, basically his entire life story which the crowd wasn't too happy about, but that was the intention!

These funky old men have so much life and energy, especially Skip with all his antics. Skip said we were all too old to be punk but the least he could do was ACT like it.

All in all it was a great experience and if they do anymore concerts soon (and I have the money) you better believe I'll be grabbing tickets again. Dead Kennedys mean a lot to me and it's so great to see they're still kicking and they're still... Dead Kennedys is the best way to put it!

  • Controversial from the offset, punk rockers the Dead Kennedys reunited in the early 00s to tour their much loved discography to the devoted and the new converts to their music. Known for the mass stage invasions and provocation to fight at the early gigs, the band are a little too old for that kind of behaviour now and the venues they now play are not quite similar to the raucous basements from which their sound originates from.

Their crude and sinister sense of humour never appealed to their homeland yet in the UK, the spiritual home of punk, the band did relatively well commercially. It feels something of a homecoming as the crowds warmly welcome the band back for an anthemic opener of 'Kill The Poor' and 'I Kill Childern'.

By those song titles you may have realised why the Americans never got it, but they were missing out on a hugely talented band and they perform with just as much passion to this day as they did during the height of their career. There was some jostling in the crowds but no venue-wide fights tonight, however Dead Kennedys proved punk is definitely not dead.

  • I have to confess that I have never seen The Dead Kennedys live before and, thus, wasn't sure what to expect.

But from the moment they hit the stage, their show was a high energy roller coaster - in the best possible way! The (relatively) new frontman Skip provided such an excellent show, constantly engaging a receptive audience with excursions off the stage and straight into the pit, that time flew by and nobody even on the balcony was left standing still. in short, an unforgettable show.

  • The show was great! Of course all of us ol punters are old and the crowd was small, which made it feel like the good ol days. Unfortunately I was misinformed about when they would go on so I only got to see the last 30 mins of the show but we walked in without paying a cover! Got to hear Holiday in Cambodia, California Über Alles, viva Las Vegas, and Nazi punks fuck off! They put on a really good show but it ended way too early

  • The evening at Sunshine Theater was very enjoyable. The doors opened at a few minutes past seven and the first band, Runaway Kids started a few minutes early. Runaway Kids, the Dwarves, TSOL and the Dead Kennedys all performed well with minimum time between each set. The Dead Kennedys were very enjoyable. I recommend seeing them. In my opinion the vocals should have been louder in the mix for all of the bands.

  • I just walked out of an abomination of what was supposed to be the DK's, The singer was like a Republican-Bro Kararoke train wreck. He managed to insult the DTES, made jokes about our heroin, made a comment about "the natives being restless," and blamed the crowd for Trudeau. This was at the Rickshaw, in the DTES. Fuck that guy.... It's not the Dead Kennedys without Jello.

    Don't give them your money.

  • I didn't go. I didn't realize when I bought the tickets that Biafra isn't in the band anymore. When I found out, any interest I had in going was gone. Obviously I'm not a "super-fan" of DK or I would have known this before hand. Maybe it was a good show?
