Biografie

  • Roy Ayers (born September 10th, 1940) is an American musician, best known for his funk, jazz and soul compositions, as well as playing of the vibraphone. He hails from Los Angeles, California.

Having celebrated his half century in the music business back in 2012, Roy Ayers can lay claim not only to one of the most diverse musical careers of the past fifty years, but also one of the most influential within his own musical sphere. He started out as a post-bop artist, releasing a slew of albums in that style on Atlantic Records, but by the time the seventies arrived, Ayers jumped ship to Polydor, where he became one of the founding fathers of the jazz-funk style. He’s been christened as ‘The Godfather of New Soul’ by fans and critics who appreciated his contribution not only to jazz funk, but also to acid jazz; those two genres, in turn, would have a big impact on early hip hop, too.

Ayers has continued to push the envelope, musically speaking, in more recent years, too; he made a brief foray into house music in the noughties, teaming up with the likes of Masters at Work and Kerri Chandler. He also made an unlikely appearance in the video game Grans Theft Auto IV, as a DJ hosting the fictional radio station Fusion FM; unsurprisingly, the station exclusively played jazz fusion and acid jazz tracks.

  • Roy Ayers

At 74 years old and after having been involved in the performance and music industry for over 30 years, Roy Ayeers has most definitely still got it. Back in 1793 he made his mark on the music industry with the immensely successful soundtrack to the film Coffy. His catalogue of credits in R&B is extremely impressive, having produced countless records for artists, as well as creating albums and tracks of his own for performance. His R&B/hip hop crossover is exciting and fresh, and the catch phrases keep an audience invested in his tracks from start to finish.

He opened with Spoken Word, on which he played keys, and encouraged the audience to join in when he signalled. He took us on a journey of jazz, blues, hip hop, soul, funk, R&B, and very genre imaginable, playing his hits from across the years for everyone to enjoy and dance along to. He is one of the most passionate performers I have ever seen live, and his strong soulful vocals allow him to get lost in his music, and in turn draw in the audience.

He’s been performing for years, and although he maybe can’t ground the high notes as well as he once might have done, the performance with the energy and conviction is still as convincing today as it has ever been. I would grab some tickets to see him live before you miss your chance!

  • I'm sorry to say it was slightly disappointing really. I appreciate Mr Ayres is not a young man, but to see him seemingly limit his vibes playing and have extended play from his keyboard musician was underwhelming.

At one point his vibraphone actually gave up the ghost, and roadies/stagehands had to try taping leads in to the cable points.

Maybe I was just unlucky and picked the wrong night -in a way I hope so.

  • This was a really fun set with some nice solos. On the second song of the set the vibes broke down. And then it happened again towards the end.

It was really great to see how well they kept the show going in the face of technical difficulties, they are real musicians able to groove effortlessly, and who understand what keeps an audience happy.
