Biografie

  • Dir En Grey is a metal band hailing from Osaka, Japan formed in 1997. Since their debut, they have released eleven studio albums and have become one of the most respected bands in alternative metal, with an international fan base and a truly astonishing live show.

Dir En Grey formed out of the ashes of La:Sadie’s, an alternative rock band that contained four of the band’s founding members, guitarists Kaoru and Die, vocalist Kyo, and drummer Shinya. The bass player of La:Sadie’s didn’t feel that the band was ready to debut when the rest of the band thought they were. Unfortunately, he was also the man who founded the band and had led the group from the very beginning, so when he left the remaining members were forced to rethink the band from the ground up.

They ended up changing the band’s name to Dir En Grey, recruiting a new bassist in the form of Toshiya, and officially debuted in February 1997. By 1998 their self-released singles had gone into the top ten of the Oricon music charts, leading to a record deal with East West Japan, and “Gauze”, their first album, was released in July 1999.

Almost right off the bat, the band became sensations in their native Japan, and remain superstars in their homeland to this very day. They’ve headlined multiple nights at arena venues like the Budokan Hall and the Osaka-jo Hall, where their first live album was recorded in 1999. However, unlike many of their peers, they have also made a name for themselves all around the world, selling out shows at Los Angeles, California’s Wiltern Theatre, and playing second on the bill on the 2009 Kerrang! Tour in the United Kingdom.

Each of their eleven studio albums have been raved about critically all over the world, and few other metal bands, Japanese or otherwise can touch them in terms of popularity, live prowess, and sheer, all-around quality. For that, Dir En Grey comes highly recommended.

  • Dir En Grey

Overall short summary: Dont see them unless your specifically a DIR EN GREY fan, its not worth the money or travel if your not a big fan of theres. Why? They are very music based, they care and love music so much, they like it more than there fans probably lol When we saw them kyo (the singer) was very anti-social. In between songs hed crouch down with his back to the audience and he never said or did anything to interact with the audience. All he said was "last song" before there last song, he seemed like he really didnt wanna be there. HOWEVER, Shinya was beating those drums up and it was badass and Die was rocking the guitar, they literally stole the stage and probably saved the show from being a completely bad experience for me. DIR EN GREY is a band you would probably see once for the experience but probably wouldnt repeat unless your a die hard fan to the end. Im a casual fan, I do like them and know there older songs and background but once was enough for me. For me there needs to be a certain amount of attention you give to the audience and I feel like they care more about the music than appeasing others, thats not a bad thing though. Theyre musicians, not entertainers- it happens. Id rather a band care about there music quality and to push themselves into being better than to just repeat the same old stuff being sellouts. All it means is go to the show expecting music and nothing else, pretend your watching and listening to a mv and thats basically it lol Id still buy their albums and merchandise but a second concert is too much money for the lack of experience i felt i got. It felt like I bought an expensive cd i could only listen to once. At the end though some of them were being a bit more friendly. Kyo put his arms up at the end of the song and bailed fairly quickly after leaving, Shinya walked up waving and smiling before leaving, strings tossed out there extra picks, waved a little and left. Persons review: Id say Die literally saved the show though for multiple reasons- he played really well and lit up the stage and he was the most friendly person there. Shinya carried the music with his amazing drumming, Kyo was awkward and anti-social- maybe he didnt feel good or was mad about something? Kaoru was kind of doin his own thing for fun, and Toshiya just kind of sank in the bg along with him lol I still love there music i just wish the concert experience would have been better

  • Despite the tranquility and peaceful ambience associated with Japan, the country has always had a huge affection for metal and rock with many international bands recording some of their best album sales in this land. Therefore it is no surprise that a number of younger bands have adopted the genres and offered their own unique takes on it, Dir En Grey are one who has achieved startling success in their homeland.

Less dramatic and theatrical now than during their inception, the original line-up remains in place which means the whole operation is incredibly tight as these five musicians have been practising this music for almost fifteen years. The majority of tonight's setlist comprises of tracks from the new record 'Arc' which has a more raw feeling than the predecessors. There are older tracks included for the more devout followers such as the Japanese 'RASETSUKOKU' which is played before an aptly named conclusion track 'The Final'. The applause received is deafening and the group takes a final bow before exiting in great confidence.

  • I know this may get a lot of negative comments, but I have to say as a Dir En Grey lover..the show this year was sorta disappointing. The stage set up,the video, and Kyo using the similar style make up and draped sheer shawl was too much like the Ghoul tour in 2013.

The screen lacked imagery and imagination equal to their awesome music and skill..

Two years ago they played at House of Blues, the venue was an insult to their popularity, and talent as mucisians I thought, but the Mayan looked much better all around, yet really lacked in better back drop, effects, and lighting to enhance the experience.

I know it's their music, and I do adore them, and even flew in from outta state to see them again..so don't get me wrong here,I don't regret it,and I'm so glad they returned after two years, but in truth,I was a bit let down this time, and think someone behind the scenes could do better.

  • Another band from my "Must see before I die" list! Well worth a look and listen. The venue was packed and both band and crowd fed off of each others energy like they were clasped together in a 69! Kyo's voice painted with varied brush strokes from deep growls and dark grunts all the way up to piercing shrills and screams levelled off with croons and clean phrasing! Fascinating and spine tingly!

Go and see if you can!!!
