Biografie

  • Hailing from Austin, Texas, US, The Black Angels are a psychedelic rock band, finding influence from the likes of Velvet Underground, along with a swirling shoegaze sound with the raw energy of garage rock.

Beginning life in 2004, The Black Angles derived their name from the Velvet Underground's song, "The Black Angel's Death Song." Comprised of the five members Stephanie Bailey (drums, percussion, bass), Christian Bland (guitar, vocals, bass, drums), Alex Maas (vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards), Kyle Hunt (keyboards, percussion, bass, guitar) and Jake Garcia (guitar, bass, vocals), the band had their first recordings featured on a 2005 compilation of psychedelic music, titled "Psychadelica Vol. 1" from Northern Star Records.

Building their online presence, the band soon developed an underground following, with extensive performing helping to create growing interest for the band. Playing at the annual South by South West Festival in Austin, Texas, US in 2006 raised their profile significantly. In 2006, they released their debut full-length "Passover" which received a number of positive reviews amongst the underground rock community, praised for its dark atmosphere and lyric content, with nods towards bands such as Spaceman 3 and Black Mountain.Their use of drone and 'dirge' also reflected their love of The Velvet Underground. The success of the record landed features of their songs on a number of television series, including Fringe, Californication and o the soundtrack of the film "Death Sentence."

Their debut album was followed by "Directions to See a Ghost" in 2008 and their third, "Phosphene Dream" in 2010. The latter became a moderately successful breakout hit for the band, reaching the top 50 of the Billboard Chart following its release. They have gained many fans amongst fellow musicians, such as the artist Unkle, who invited them to collaborate on the tracks, "With You In My Head" and "Natural Selection," with the former being featured on the Twilight Saga soundtrack.

The Black Angels have gone on to perform at a number of high profile festivals and concerts, supporting the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, The Black Keys, Wolf Mother and many more.

  • The Black Angels

Although the name The Black Angels may allude to something of a hard metal outfit, the Texan quintet's sound is very firmly grounded in the field of psychedelica. They have only been on the circuit for just over a decade yet have amassed a global fanbase due to their dedication to the touring schedule and intense, interactive live show that accompanies their interesting discography.

The band who's namesake derives from the Velvet Underground simply live and breath the alternative, surrealistic way of life so it is translated into the live setting with unmatched authenticity. The whole combination of lighting, visuals and warped instrumentals has the ability to transport the crowds to the band's very own warped zone where the likes of 'Don't Play with Guns' and 'Yellow Elevator' are the soundtrack. Although there is real concentration onstage, lead vocalist Alex Maas has natural interaction with his audience and makes sure they are enthused and excited for the finale of 'Bloodhounds on My Trail' which is a barrage of sound, light and visuals.

  • The Black Angels. What can I say? Well, they are from the great state of Texas, which already makes them better than the rest of the bands out there. And then, there's the funky rock style that they have going on.

Psychedelic is what they call it, and yes, The Black Angels really do have some "far out, groovy" music. Got to see them perform at The Triple Door, and I was loving every minute of it. They really know how to put on a show. That song Young Dead Men really gets me every time I hear it, and for it to be live just blew me away.

I am so in love with this band. My friends call me a hippie, lol, but I just tell them I'm a flower child and ain't nothing wrong with that. I wish more bands had music like this. I was on top of the world for the entire concert, and I know a lot of other people in the crowd were feeling stuck in the moment too. The music is simple is fun and so easy to sing along, just the way I like it. Just great!

  • Hadn't ever seen them before, but they put on a real solid show. The opener was good, but you could tell that these guys have been doing this for longer just from the sound quality. I thought maybe the acoustics of the venue weren't that great after the first band, but realized it was an issue of the mix once The Black Angels took the stage. They played a good mix of older and newer stuff, and it was all on point. I go to a lot of shows, but this was honestly one of the better ones I've been to recently. It was just so easy to get lost in the music. See them if you have the chance.

  • By far one of the best rock performances I've been to. The band from Austin, Texas are guaranteed to trip you out with their heavy phsycadelic riffs and aggressive bass. Saw them play at the Trinity in Bristol which is an amazing venue though definitely believe they deserve to be playing in bigger venues. True rock stars by nature, we got to meet them after the gig and they were down for going out for a drink in the town! Their supporting act 'A Place to Bury Strangers' too were otherworldly and is definitely one to watch! 10/10

  • I came home one night from a party and my wife had the TV on and the first band was just finishing on Austin City Limits. I sat down and started watching. The Black Angels started and I was instantly glued. Then the stereo went on, boom my mouth was agape the rest of the show.

They had just played a week before in my city. Really? What luck. They have not come back yet.

If they are anything close to what I witnessed on the TV that night I can only imagine the feeling of beeing in the crowd.

  • The greatest modern day psych Rock band- The Angels live are an incredible melting pot of the past the present and the future . Get to the front, let Bob Mustachio's psychadelic light show wash over you and let The Black Angels take you to another planet. Live highlights:Science Killer,Bloodhounds,Currency, Molly Moves and You on The Run. These guys are behind Levitation the festival in Austin which is a game changer for anyone who likes psych rock/garage music.

  • Largely disappointed with the show - mainly due to the venue. The sound was terrible! Parketeateret's amps need an upgrade and they simply need a broader array of speakers. All the guitars and vocals got super mushy and flat. Grrhrhr... it pained my ears:( And, perhaps it was only that what fuelled my reception of the band – bit repetitive, fixated on complex-guitar playing with never-ending chains of effects, they didn’t feel authentic and original.

  • One of my favourite bands ever. Their life performance was top notch! Everyone had a blast. Rough Trade East is such a cool venue for these sorts of events. And The atmosphere is very relaxed and cool. Hope to see The Black Angels in London soon.
