Biografie

  • Maxwell is a Brooklyn based singer-songwriter and record producer, regarded as one of the most important figures in the 90s R&B movement. He is credited alongside Erykah Badu and D’Angelo for pioneering the genre Nu-soul, but has managed to define himself outside the scope of his contemporaries.

Maxwell was born Gerald Maxwell Rivera in Brooklyn, New York, US on 23 May 1973. He used his middle name as a stage moniker, hiding his full name from the public as a means to preserve his family’s privacy. When Maxwell was only 3 years old he lost his father in a plane crash. Needless to say the experience had a huge impact on the young child and left him clinging to the Christian faith for support. Still in his childhood Maxwell joined the choir of his Baptist church; however, he did not seriously pursue a career in music until he was 17.

Influenced by the likes of Prince, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder, Maxwell started to write his own music (the first of his renderings were composed on a cheap Casio keyboard a friend gave him). During high school Maxwell’s classmates perceived him to be shy and awkward and it came as a surprise to them that he would venture into a career as a musician. Despite his peers expectations Maxwell excelled as a solo artist and was making circuits around New York City’s club scene in 1991. Maxwell’s early sound largely incorporated the sound of jheri curl soul, an offshoot of 80s R&B that focused on a balanced combination of computerized and live instrumentation.

Maxwell generated quite the buzz around New York and in 1994 he was signed to Columbia Records. That same year he worked with renowned guitarist Wah Wah and songwriter Leon Ware (collaborator of Marvin Gaye) to complete his studio debut “Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite”. Though the album was completed in 1995 its release was delayed until 1996 as many execs doubted its potential to enter the mainstream. The album did not initially catch on with the general public; however, it exploded a couple of months after its release. It reached No. 8 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 36 on the Billboard 200 ( it stayed on the latter for a total of 78 weeks). The album was also a huge critical achievement for Maxwell. It received a Grammy Nomination for Best R&B Album and was considered one of the year’s best albums by Rolling Stone, Time, and USA Today.

A year after the release of his debut Maxwell put out his EP “MTV Unplugged (Maxwell EP)”. This release consisted of some of Maxwell’s finest tracks to date, but also featured some curve ball covers like Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” (this cover would later appear on his album “Now”) and Nine Inch Nail’s catchy but asinine track “Closer”.

Maxwell released his highly anticipated sophomore release “Embrya” to mix criticism, but wide acceptance amongst fans. This album debuted at No.3 on the charts and went double platinum. One year later Maxwell released the most commercially successful song of his career “Fortunate”. Billboard magazine ranked it as the No.1 R&B hit of the year. Maxwell’s 2001 album “Now” marked a return to form and with the help of the massive hit “Lifetime” it entered the charts at No.1.

Maxwell disappeared from the music scene for 7 years; however, he made a reappearance at the 2008 BET Awards performing a cover of Al Green’s “Simply Beautiful”. In 2009 Maxwell released his long awaited follow up album “BLACKsummers’night” to universal critical acclaim. The album went on to win Maxwell two Grammy awards including Best R&B Album and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “Pretty Wings”. Additionally the album was a commercial feat for Maxwell selling 316,000 copies in the first week and entering the Billboard 200 at No.1. Maxwell toured extensively throughout North America and Europe in support of this album.

  • Anyone familiar with the music of Maxwell knows it’s nearly impossible not to be drawn in by his soulful, smooth, melodies and voice.

Seeing Maxwell live in concert was no different, his voice seems to drip like honey as he sings along to his full band, singing with his songs almost effortlessly. He commands the crowds, with even a high note, and he knows this with the instant feedback from the enamored ladies in his audience. Singing songs like “This Woman’s Work”, there seemed to be almost a mesmerizing hush as high note after high note were perfectly sung, weaving a gripping melodic performance. Songs like “Sumthin’ Sumthin’” could then get the whole crowd up and singing along.

Still, make no mistake, Maxwell gives performances that can enrapture both sexes, female and male. His voice sounds exactly as you would hear it on his albums, backed by a full live band, recreating his hits that he has accumulated over the years. Encouraging the audience at times to join in and sing along, melodies of both Maxwell’s voice and the crowds intertwine to create a great, still seemingly intimate experience, even in the larger venue that I was in, (Madison Square Garden). The atmosphere is relaxed, soulful, letting you really dig into the groove that is being created around you.

Maxwell may be one of the best soul singers of our day, his performances only solidify his position as such, and are not to be missed.

  • Maxwell's performance at the Horseshoe Casino in downtown Cincinnati was EXCELLENT! Maxwell took concert goers on a musical tour of his songs. He opened with his hit "Sumpthin' Sumpthin" and introduced us to new music he was working on. His vocals were in rare form, with a range of high notes that had me at times wondering if a woman was hitting those notes. Then he would go from the highest of high note to his normal range, into a deep bass range. He added a hint of gospel flavor singing, "God has spoken, so let the church say Amen." Just when I thought the show was over, he would return to the stage and start singing again! He ended the concert and returned to the stage twice. Each time returning to sing another mega hit such as "Ascension," with Maxwell leading and encouraging the crowd to sing the refrain "....don't ever wonder." The Cincinnati fans were out their seats dancing from the beginning of the concert to the end. But they, (the fans) would not let him leave the stage until he sung his song called "Pretty Wings." He wowed the audience and thanked them for having him here in Cincinnati. Maxwell had the band introduce themselves and tell where they were from and then the show was over. He ended the concert with "I don't know what else to say...... Goodnight!"

  • When I learned that Mawell was the headliner to play in Concord CA,this past Memorial Day, I knew at that moment I was going!I stood in the cold, windy, rain 2 purchase my ticket & did not mind going solo-had so much fun! His performance, band & female singer were dynamic, and I was in Heaven, throughout its entirety! I love Maxwell's spirit, candidness, humor, spirituality,& he remembering Marvin Gaye! It got cold during the night, yet I wrapped myself tightly in 2 blankets and stood, during the duration, mesmerized by every word Maxwell spoke & flawlessly sang. I was hoping to get 2 cds autographed.. maybe next time. Each time he is in my area, I will be at a Maxwell concert, more mesmerized by Maxwell's essence...

  • Great show! Opening act Ro James got the party started with high energy, enjoyed him. He's a new R&B star. Waited a little while for Maxwell, but he's always worth the wait.

Maxwell is the ultimate entertainer, never disappoints. He's so gorgeous, and the ultimate entertainer. It was my birthday weekend, and I was super excited. His voice is like butter, and never a bad show.

It was not the usual crowd that you see at a Maxwell concert, a lot of them were sorta subdued. it was probably due to all the things going on in the country. As for me I enjoyed the show immensely, and have been for too many years to count. Excellent show, love Maxwell!

  • Great performer, excellent musicians, screaming crowds, all of these can only be reached after almost 2 hours wait. Initially started at 7:30 pm with 30 minutes first presentation, we had to wait almost 2 hours for the show to began. The sound system were awful and feeding microphones happened quite often, sometimes we can't hear the lyrics though I was the 5th row in front. But thanks to Maxwell wonderful performance and his communication with the audience, the time flew. Access into and outside the concert room were very difficult. Many doors were still locked at the end of the show.

  • AWESOME. I truly loved loved loved the Maxwell concert under the stars at Hollywood Bowl. It was more than I expected and then some. Maxwell is a very talented artist with beautiful crowd appeal. Something for everyone. I am so blessed and happy that I attended this great show. Can't wait to see him again and I WILL be closer to the stage. My seats were very accomodating but I'd like to see him closer. Raphael and Jayzme were awesome also. I had never seen either of these performers in person. I will see them again. Thanks Goldstar.

  • WOW! Where do I start. The concert was magnificent. Maxwell performed from the time he got on stage until the time he left. He interacted with the audience and at the end we all went to the stage and I got to touch him not once but twice! How awesome was that?! He is so handsome and sexy! He is such an entertainer! If I could go see him at one of the sites he is going to in the next few days, I would definitely go again, but I would love back stage passes. It was worth every dime I payed to be on the floor!

  • The show was great, our seats were in a good spot, i would have loved to have been closer because i only came because i was raised in Brooklyn and i share the same biryhday as Maxwell so i just wanted to meet him. But i was satisfied knowing i had a chance to be in the same space as him. My only complaint is the lighting, when he introduced his band individually they failed to put the spot light on everyone.

    Thanks Myra

  • Truly one of the best, purest voices in R&B. His stage presence was awesome and he did almost like an acapella that really showed his range. I've seen him a couple times now and would highly recommend. Also, Marsha Ambrosius showed up which was a pleasant surprise because word was that she had to skip a couple tour dates due to being sick from a cold. Long story short, she killed it and the show was great!
