Beats Antique is American crossover band that experiment with world fusion alongside electronic music. Formed in 2007, they have built a reputation for their eclectic mix of genres as well as their enchanting live shows.
Beats Antique is made up of David Satori, who was born in Burlington, Vermont in 1979, who brought CV of experience with many genres of world music, having graduated from the California Institute of the Arts, with a degree in music performance and composition. Zoe Jakes had 10 years of jazz and ballet dance experience under her belt upon joining and when she met Satori, she began working with Ableton Live, a music program that the group does all of their production with. This was Jakes’ first experience with electronic music. Tommy Cappel met Jakes when they were both a part of Extra Action Marching Band. He met Satori years prior when Satori brought him in to play drums for a Burning Man decompression party. Cappel is originally from Fairfax, Virginia. He is the son of two music teachers, and was influenced heavily by his father’s jazz records, and his brother’s progressive rock and heavy metal music. The trio came together in San Francisco, California when Jakes approached her manager, Miles Copeland, (brother of drummer Stewart Copeland of The Police) regarding a new album. Copeland completely got behind the project and Beats Antique’s debut full-length studio album entitled “Tribal Derivations” was released on Copeland’s CIA record label in 2007.
They were still coming into their own when they released their second album, entitled “Collide” in 2008, which became one of the top 20 most downloaded electronic albums on Amazon. When they got to their third album they started to get even more experimental bringing in dulcimer player Jamie Janover and beat boxer and hip hop vocalist LYNX. By this point in their career, their style was inviting in influences from Middle Eastern belly dance music, down tempo, and old school jazz music, fused with electronic dance music.
Over the course of 2013 and 2014, they released two albums, “A Thousand Faces: Act I” in 2013 and then “A Thousand Faces: Act II” in the following year.

The trio is known for its crossover sounds and live performance that incorporates various different musicians, theatrics and dance. In a career that spans less than seven years they have built a huge reputation through word of mouth and critical appraisal as opposed to album sales.
This means the fans attending tonight have completely subscribed to the mentality of the band's sounds and performance and therefore offer enthusiastic reaction to every song played. As Zoe Jakes dances around stage to the sound of strings and percussion the whole room is completely transfixed by her movements and style that compliments the music really well. After fifteen songs and a whole variety of performance art the band takes its bows like a theatre troupe and receive hefty applause from the fans who have totally enjoyed the show. It really is a curious gig yet the unconventional works brilliantly for this band and its fanbase.
Beat Antique grabs the audience's attention from the first note through the final encore. A trio comprised of a drummer/percussionist, multi-instrumentalist/DJ and a belly dancer/drummer, the instrumentation alone should grab your attention. They are as visually stunning as they are with their music.
Musically they draw inspiration from around the world taking on eastern and tribal modalities blended with electronica. If you are up for a real music adventure, try Beats Antique. Each time I've seen them, their show is unique. Zoe's costumes are elaborate enough on their own, then combined with stage sets complete with video mapping.
For those of you who have not yet seen beats antique, do yourself the biggest favor of your life... See this show! I've been a studio session musician for over 40 years, and I've never witnessed a more Dynamic, compelling, thrilling, exhilarating and ironically entertaining spectacle in such a small and beautiful intimate setting is the Depot in Salt Lake City... This is The Cutting Edge of all of the best that music and fusion has evolved to this point in human evolution... No kidding guys and gals, invest some time and get to know this band they are simply out of this world! Kudos Beats you're the Nas!
BEST concert ever! And probably the best concert I'll ever see. It was like nothing id imagine. The music was amazing and the performances even better! I liked how they also were very involved with the crowd too! Their props and stuff we're very neat as well. All and all AMAZING show! I hope they do this again!
Pure, unbridled, and seemingly limitless creativity emanate from these virtuosic individuals. I am at a loss for words to describe the performance I saw last night, except that it was truly nothing less than a performance, and so much more than merely a "concert." Sublime. A must-see.
I loved seeing Beats Antique, one of my favorite bands. The performances were very diverse! I loved every set. The music was crisp and bumpin loud. The crowd was really into the show. Would definitely see them again. Wish I could have bought cd's or a tshirt or something, tho.
Something I have never experienced before! It was amazing I hope they come back:) all the different costume changes and people that were on the stage was awesome!! I got to take a picture with David and he was so nice!
This group of Highly talented individuals were the highlight of my week! I've seen them twice and if they ever come here again I will go again! I love love love love love love love love love beats antique!
