Friday 7th December. Islington Assembly Hall, London. Fish. It’s a throwback to 1987 with a full outing for ‘Clutching at Straws’ plus tracks from Fish’s new album. It’s probably my least favourite Fish era Marillion album but it still has many great moments. I was a Marillion obsessive in the eighties seeing them live at least seven times in about three years. But my prog love affair ended when Fish left and I have not bought a single post Fish Marillion album or indeed a Fish solo album. Those few years as that band together were the perfect alchemy for me at an important musical point in my life during my late teens and twenties.
Back to tonight. As usual the Assembly Hall provides the perfect setting for a concert and the sound again is spot on throughout. It’s a strong start with ‘Slainte Mhath’ one of the stand out tracks from ‘Clutching’ it’s then a new song ‘Man with a Stick’ which I didn’t really connect with on first listen.
Sadly Fish can no longer hit those same notes from thirty years back and dodgy knees and back sap him a little of his energy on stage with regular stops off on a stolen bar stool from Norway. But this in no way detracts from the show and songs taken on a more subtler nuance. Always one for a story the between song banter and interaction with the crowd is amusing with the cries for Grendel given their usual short shrift. Unusually and deviating from the setlist he indulges a request from a wee Scottish lassie from the Scottish borders and we get a great rendition of ‘Lavender’ sending the crowd into raptures singing along to every word.
It’s the same for pretty much each song from ‘Clutching’ as our old memory banks dig deep into those teenage recesses to get the lyrics out. Most of the new songs work well although maybe a couple outstay their welcome a bit but are certainly more suited to his new vocal range.
With one eye on the clock and thoughts of last trains home I was determined to stay till the end for set closer and ‘hit’ from the album ‘Incommunicado’ and it didn’t disappoint. A perfect end for this old man to indulge himself back to his youth.
Keep on prog rockin y’all

‘Do you remember, chalk hearts melting on a playground wall? Do you remember, dawn escapes from moonwashed college halls?’…were the lyrics that echoed through the auditorium unaccompanied before Fish even came out on stage. He sang the opening lines of Kayleigh over and over until the audience were singing them along with him, and he then ran on stage to a tumultuous applause before continuing to sing the ballad style song. It was a great start to the show, as he had everyone singing along with him from the start, and completely won over the audience.
The Scottish singer/songwriter played through his tracks, new and old with his poetic lyrics reaching out to the crowd. Although they’re the same lyrics as on the studio recordings, it’s easier to relate to he music when it’s performed live, as seeing Fish’s facial expressions and body language made me feel a closer connection with his music.
I wasn’t sure how he was going to structure the set as his catalogue of tracks is so vast, but he played a really great selection of tracks new and old, starting back in the 80s, and gradually working chronologically through the hits up to his most recent work. It was really interesting to hear his music like this and hear how it had evolved over the years. It was a magical show, and a great showcase of genuine talent.
Amazing concert, the very best of the evening. What a surprise to hear the entire Misplaced Childhood for the album 30th birthday! I am a fan of Marillion and Fish for his whole career:great and sensible artist. Tuesday he showed us the best of his art! We are impatient to see him again on stage, finally he became an old friend ;-)
Nevertheless we cant be so enthusiast for Dream Theater: was their sound engineer sleeping? Sound was Horrible (resonance in low end kick 5m in front the foh mixing desk) and james Labrye not very concerned. A pity for the other genious musians. We have seen them in better in much better conditions.
Queensryche were ok. Great singer, very professional.
Cheers
First ever time i'd been to what was an very intimate venue at the Islington Assembly Halls and hadn't seen Fish since playing in Marillion at Milton Keynes Bowl approximately 30 years previous so wasn't sure what to expect.
What I got was an artist who can still pull it off in his own way. A little politically motivated in some ways but still his raw Scottish self.
Tonight he was 'retiring' the album Misplaced Childhood and it brought back a lot of old memories and was performed excellently by Fish and his band. Completing the night with 'Market Square Heroes', I believe like myself, everybody left happy.
Great concert at the Kantine in Cologne. Years since I saw Fish live and the first time outside of Marillion.
Nice crowd of people watching too, I think I must have been one of the youngest in the audience (at 48) ;-)
Nice to see Fish wade through the audience and shake hands with his long standing fans. Lovely touch.
Was a bit disappointment that not many Marillion songs were performed but on the whole I thoroughly enjoyed the night.
The show and the ambiance was great. That evening in The Haque his voice was less than the last concert in Holland in "De Boerderij". I'll stay and come back when he is in Holland as well!!
The concert was in one word fantastic!
Great guy bringing back sweet memories with the best voice ever! Loved every single minute of it!
See you next year, I hope!!!
