FIDLAR (F**K It Dog, Life’s A Risk) is an American skate punk/ garage punk band originally from Los Angeles, California.
FIDLAR was first formed in 2009 by Zac Carper, Brandon Schwartzel, and Elvis and Max Kuehn; with the Kuehn brothers being the sons of Greg Kuehn, keyboardist for Long Beach punk legends T.S.O.L., Zac Carper (vocals/guitar) is the son of famed surfboard designer John Carper and Brandon Schwartzel (bassist), is the half cousin of Elvis and Max. The group released several songs which led to the band signed with Mom Pop Music Records for the United States distribution, Whichita Recordings for the United Kingdom, and Dine Alone Records for Canada.
FIDLAR released their first EP entitled “Don’t Try” in 2012, and was also named by Stereogum as one of the 40 Best New Bands of 2012. The band followed “Don’t Try” with three more EPs, “No Waves/ No Ass,” “Shit We Recorded In Our Bedroom,” and “DIYDUI.” Having been so busy recording the EPs, plus some touring with The Hives and The Black Lips, the band released their self-titled debut album in 2013. Additionally in 2013 the band was nominated as Best Web-Born Artist for the O Music Awards as well as a nomination for Best Live Act for an AIM Independent Music Awards. Some of their songs have also been used in soundtracks for movies, and video games.
Mehr erfahrenReliving hedonistic punk's glory days, California's FIDLAR (an acronym of 'fuck it dog, life's a risk') are a cocktail of pure adrenaline and ecstasy (not the drug). The four-piece, comprising Elvis and Max Kuehn – sons of T.S.O.L. legend Greg Kuehn – Brandon Schwartzel, their half-cousin, and Zac Carper – no relation to the others, but is the son of surfboard artist John Carper – don't delve into life's more complex matters in their skate-punk fusillade. They prefer the age-old mantra of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll (where rock'n'roll is replaced with beer). Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 would've perfectly hosted FIDLAR's racket.
Their rock virility is difficult to pin down in mere words. FIDLAR deliver sets packed with K.O. haymakers, unrelenting pandemonium and the raw carnage of classic dingy-basement punk-rock. Crowdsurfing, moshpits and general sweaty havoc are rife – try and remain intact during the bloodlust of “Cheap Beer” or “Cocaine” – but they're not malicious or angry, it's akin to letting off of steam, a frenzied disconnection of limbs and mind. Be possessed, be inebriated, be rapturously happy, flailing limbs, hurling your body around yowling to the moon. Get yourself down to the front and embrace the chaos. Who said punk was dead?
Extremely loud show with a rowdy, young crowd. Fidlar has some excellent songs, but unfortunately, they are not entirely consistent and the subject matter of the songs can seem rather immature even though I am only in my late 20s. The band had a cool set featuring skull decorations, fog machines, and strange statues of suited men, and they had plenty of strange presence. Some memorable moments included the bassist playing while sitting on top of a huge speaker and the singer instructing us to sit on the floor during the build up of a song, which we did. The opening band, Dune Rats, from Australia, played a highly energetic set, but the songs were forgettable apart from a cover of Blister in the Sun by Violent Femmes. Overall, this show was not amazing, but I would recommend it if you are already a fan of Fidlar and want something to do some night. I might advise bringing ear plugs, though, as this is the next morning, and the ringing in my ears still hasn't completely stopped.
Fuck It Dog, Life's a Risk, or more socially acceptable FIDLAR make an awfully authentic skate punk sound for a bunch of Californians. Obviously inspired by the punk revolution and their own sunny surroundings, since 2009 the boys have been making a sound often described as surf rock which has gone down really well with the masses.
They find themselves playing on larger and larger stages to more and more fans as their reputation grows. The way in which they conduct a live show does not seem to alter as the quartet have a fantastic jam dynamic which appears to have not been planned or considered before they step out. They only have one studio album at the moment yet it is packed with strong material so the set has a great pace and allows the group to showcase the grungey instrumentals and pounding percussion. By the final screeching tones of 'Cocaine' you are left with the impression that the young social commentators still have a lot more to say.
This was probable one of the best punk shows I have seen in a while! Just constant moshing and crowd surfing every minute. FIDLAR basically played everything between there two albums. Including their cover of Sabotage (opened with) and their rendition of The Star Spangled Banner. The pacing was excellent as they just played right through with hardly any breaks. I loved them so much in Chicago, that I ended up seeing them in Milwaukee (better crowd than CHI imo) the next night as well.
SWMRS and The Frights were also very good bands as well that were in the set. Definitely not punk these two, but still had a sound that complemented FIDLAR well.
5/5 if you love to mosh and just get physical
I guess my disclaimer is that their shows are all ages, so don't feel sorry for throwing an elbow at some stupid high school punk haha
This review may be biased on account it was my 21st bday, so I was gonna have a good time no matter what lol.
Speechless. I had been looking forward to this show for months, and it was more incredible than I ever thought it would be. The only upsetting thing about the experience was that when I was buying a shirt at the merch table the lead singer walked up, so I said hello politely, and he didn't give me the time of day. It made me feel as if he took everything for granted considering I've purchased every record, done the preorders, bought merch, and paid for tickets for this concert. I got a bad taste in my mouth about the band from that. I admire their care free attitude, but I truly hope they're not just assholes with God complexes. Regardless I love the music and I'm a fan for life. I hope FIDLAR doesn't fuck themselves in the long run with their childish attitudes. Fuck It Dawg!
First FIDLAR concert for me was at the Fox Theater Pomona. FIDLAR has been my favorite band for years now. I have seen them four times. Fox Theater, Agenda Fest, Hollywood Palladium, and a show from a few days ago at the Teragram Ballroom. That was literally the best show yet! New album was amazing! Can't wait to see them again. They will never get old because they bring this energy to their shows that just make us all go ape shit and it's just this amazing vibe I get from each and every one of their shows.
Fidlar was fantastic with every song but were unable to do an encore because the crowd was getting pretty rowdy
The frights were pretty bomb, great music lots of fun.
Something was up with dunerats. They were not that good and of the two fidlar songs they did it didn't seem like they knew the lyrics or how the song goes. Something was just bad about them.
Fidlar was 10/10 amazing
Dunerats not so much
Excellent night. Band played everything you would want and played the whole set really tightly. The crowd were excellent too. Great atmosphere and full of energy. Really glad I made the gig.
Met the band after gig too and they couldn't have been more sociable. Saw them out at the Veriety Bar after that again and they were having a blast.
The energy and the crowd when I say them at Philly was amazing! I was surprised, seeing as it was very different from the first time I saw them. More or less the entire crowd was a really safe mosh pit and it was such a fun time for everyone involved. Very high energy. My only complaint was that the show was cut an hour short.
Been waiting to see FIDLAR since 2012 and they didn't disappoint. From the back to the front of standing, everyone was moving: circle pits everywhere - absolute carnage. The highlight of the night was probably when the entire staying sat down while the band played the intro to Cocaine, leaping up when it dropped. Amazing.
