Biografie

  • The Avett Brothers is an American Folk band made up of brothers, Scott and Seth Avett, as well as Joe Kwon and Bob Crawford. The group was formed during 2000 in North Carolina.

The groups beginnings can be traced back to the two brothers younger days, when they merged the separate bands they had formed at college and school to perform under the moniker “Nemo”. Whilst playing in the rock influenced Nemo and releasing three albums with them, the brothers started a side project focusing on acoustic music, eventually writing their first folk EP, the eponymous “Avett Bros.”, in 2000.

After the disbanding of Nemo, the Avetts, alongside new members Kwon and Crawford, decided to push on with their new band, and wrote and released their debut album “Country Was” in 2002, before embarking on their first tour together in the same year.

They were shortly picked up by local record label, Ramseur Records, and released their follow up album a year later, “A Carolina Jubilee”. This was the first glimpse of the Avett Brothers’ ability to blend their folk style with other genres, such as punk, pop and honky tonk.

The group released a further three studio albums with Ramseur between 2004 and 2007, before collaborating with legendary producer Rick Rubin, and subsequently signing with his American Recordings label.

It was with Rubin that the band really broke through into the mainstream, with their sixth effort, “I Love You and Love You” reaching number 16 in the US charts. The album was well received by critics, who appreciated their more polished sound, and after touring for a few years the band moved on to capitalise on their newfound fame, releasing the even more successful “The Carpenter” and “Magpie and the Dandelion” in 2012 and 2013.

As well as touring, the band has performed at the Grammy Awards and TV shows such as “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and their music has also been used as the soundtrack for many different movies such as “This is 40” and “Friday Night Lights”.

  • The Avett Brothers

Wednesday 31st August. Shepherds Bush Empire. The Avett Brothers. Brothers Scott and Seth lead this seven piece band for night two at the newly reopened Shepherds Bush Empire. They have a fine back catalogue of albums with their latest “True Sadness’’ their best since signing to the majors but its live where they really come into their own.

It took a couple of songs for the sound to level out and the vocals to come to the front and the set picks something from ten of their albums with heavy emphasis on the new album and “I and love and you” and “Emotionalism”.

The evening is an eclectic mix of musical styles, pacing, band configurations, electric, acoustic and every combination in between. A talented set of musicians and multi instrumentalists who can clearly turn their collective hands to anything even starting the show with the funky kazoo led “D Bag Rag”.

The brothers alternate lead vocals swapping acoustic guitar, for banjo, piano and electric guitars throughout the night. The up tempo rockier numbers had the whole crowd clapping and singing but these were ably complemented by a softer side especially on the poignantly moving hushed solo Scott number “Murder in the City”

But it’s “Kick Drum Heart” that nearly brings the recently restored roof back down. A full on speed clap along metal wig out that ends with Scott and Seth in the audience with the latter down on his knees going the full ’Hendrix’ guitar solo. Set ends with a stunning version of “I and love and you” and as a collective in the room tonight we do.

A great band still on top form live and fantastic entertainment for over two hours

    Keep on rockin y’all.

  • The Avett Brothers have been the soundtrack to my life for the last 6 years. Every emotion I have felt, whether it is joy, love, sadness, rage, I have always been able to relate a song to them. I have seen the Avett Brothers twice and that is not nearly enough for me. I saw them in Montreal and in Boston. Both shows I was in the front row and I highly recommend it for the full in your face experience. The Avett Brothers have an energy that is contagious like a virus that spreads over your entire body for the entire show. Songs like "Talk on Indolence" make your whole body vibrate with ecstasy as you thrash your head, stomp your feet, and shake your fist. They break up their shows with heartwarming single mic numbers such as "Murder in the City". Watching them all sing in perfect harmony playing acoustically into one microphone sends shivers down your spine and you break out in goose bumps. I find that at their shows everyone in the audience is on the same wave length as you, there are no bros shouting out song titles. There are no wasted DMB type fans who won't even remember that they went to a show in the morning. I have found all my fellow fans to be caring compassionate individuals who look out for each other and all have the same love and passion as you do. It saddens me that I have moved across the country for 6 months and now that I have moved the Avett Brothers have finally returned to do a show in my home state of Vermont. If you love bluegrass, love to rock, and aren’t ashamed of a shedding a tear once in a while then you will absolutely love to see the greatest live show of our generation, The Avett Brothers.

  • I loved the show! I'e seen them 2 dozen times and this show was if I had asked them to play my favorites!! ALL of them... What I don't love is the venue. Too much alcohol being served to the point that too many people were inebriated. I love a beer as much as the next person..but falling down drunk, crushing beer cans underfoot while most people are wearing sandals, and spilling your beer on others is out of control here (and frankly, at other music venues). Plus, at our age, we appreciate being able to sit down on occasion. Also, very hard for first timers to glimpse the Avett's. I'm 5'2" and barely saw a thing (even tho some guy who was wasted offered to pick me up!), but I have seen them enough that I was OK with that, but those next to me travelled from Connecticut to see them for the first time and with everyone standing it was impossible. But their music and singing was as top-notch as ever!!!

  • I first experienced the electricity of Avett Brothers concert at BottleRock in Napa, California in May 2015.I have since moved to Houston, Texas and I was thrilled to see them coming out to Sugarland. My second experience seeing the Avett Brothers live was just as good if not better as they continue to produce world class albums. The Avett Brothers live concert experience is showmanship and musicianship at its finest. A perfect blend of their newest songs and old favorites. Also, their rendition of "Blackhole Sun" as a tribute to Chris Cornell was truly one of the highlights of the evening. A truly uplifting experience to witness these group of musicians play with honesty, heart and soul.

  • I am simply blown away by the show I attended last night by The Avett Brothers. They seem to come to Cleveland a lot and this was the first year I could make it. I'm so glad I was able to see them live!

They are a folk band with the attitudes of rock stars! They are all insanely talented musicians yet totally humble. They played a good mixture of old and new music. You can tell that their fan base is really broad as well. This really makes for an interesting concert experience.

I would highly recommend attending a show of theirs even if you are slightly a fan! It will make you fall even more in love with their music.

  • As always, The Avett Brothers are consummate professionals! Sound Quality was exceptional, Show flowed great with a mix of old favorites and new songs!

Lighting and set were minimal but worked well throughout the show and all flowed as intended.

I also find it interesting that the vibe of the crowd is always polite and into the music for the sake of the music. The mix of the crowd is generally mid 20's to mid 40's but as a fan in my 50's I've seen young families to truly elderly fans enjoying an Avett's show! These guys know how to balance great marketing and salesmanship with truly great music!

  • This was my 13th show and I have tickets to 3 more this year, so giving them a rating or a review is tough for me. My advice would be go see them live and you will be hooked. They are my favorite band and I spend a lot of money following them around. . their fans are like no other and it has become like a family to all of us. These guys are good people. Not only do they make amazing music, they do a lot for their communities for charities, local businesses in NC and are just all around family-oriented musicians.

  • The main reason why me, my dad, and my little brother saw this concert was for John Prine. I've seen him three times. First Avett Brothers concert though. And it was really awesome. Red rocks is a great venue in itself, but I had a blast. I only knew a few songs but it was really fun to listen to. They paid homage to John and The Greatful Dead, I think. But all in all, I had a blast and would definitely recommend seeing them live. John or the Avett Brothers.

  • Great live show! Lots of energy. They played for over 2 hours. Without breaks. In the Dallas summer heat. They switched out instruments throughout the show, even pulling out a couple of kazoos for one song. Scott jumped into the crowd at one point WITH HIS GUITAR STILL PLUGGED IN. Probably a roadie's nightmare, but great showmanship. Overall a great performance from the entire band. It felt like they really loved what they were doing.

  • Awesome concert with a lot of the old favorites, plus 6 songs from the new album "Closer than Together", including "Long Story Short" for the first time live. Added bonus, when Scott and Seth danced into the audience on "Ain't No Man", Scoot just happened to dance up our row! High fives for everyone!

Stephens Auditorium did an amazing job with security and entrance and exit also.
