Biografie

  • Tonight Alive is a female fronted Australian five-piece pop punk band from Sydney, formed in 2008. Over the last six-years, they have gained a global reputation as one of the most successful pop punk bands of today.

Guitarist Jake Hardy and bassist Cameron Adler already had project together when they recruited then sixteen-year-old Jenna McDougall to form the first version of Tonight Alive. They later added Whakaio Taahi on lead guitar and Matt Best on drums. They spent their first year playing local shows at youth centres around the Sydney area. In 2009, the band decided to record their debut self-funded EP “All Shapes and Disguises” with producers Greg Stace and Dave Petrovic. It was released in June 2010, with their music video and debut single “Wasting Away” being released all in the same month. “Closer” was featured on season six of the US reality TV show The Hills.

It was in 2010 that a demo made it to the desk of producer Mark Trombino, who contacted the band, and proposed to produce their debut full-length album. The band recorded their first album in Los Angeles at NRG Studios over two months. It would be entitled “What Are You So Scared Of?” released on October 14th 2011, in Australia, Valentines Day 2012 in US and September 28th 2012 in the US. It made it to number 15 in Australian album chart, and number 7 in the US Heatseekers chart.

The first single “Starlight”: was released July 1st 2011, the second single “Let It Land” was released on September 19th 2011. They even featured on “Punk Goes Pop 4” compilation CD covering Mumford & Sons hit single “Little Lion Man”. The band has been on numerous tours since, such as the Fearless Friends Tour alongside blessthefall, The Word Alive, Motionless In White and Chunk! No, Captain Chunk.

The band’s sophomore album “The Other Side” was released on September 6th 2013, through Sony and Fearless Records. The first single “The Ocean” premièred on Radio 1 in the UK on July 11th 2013 to coincide with the announcement of the album. In promotion of this album, they embarked on a tour with All Time Low on their A Love like War: UK Tour and a tour with Taking Back Sunday and The Used on their co-headlining North American tour in March 2014.

They contributed their song “The Edge” for Sony and Marvel’s film The Amazing Spider-Man 2and it was featured on the deluxe edition of the soundtrack in Australia, New Zealand, UK and Ireland.

  • Tonight Alive

When I first heard Tonight Alive was playing at O2 Forum in Kentish Town, London, I didn't doubt for a second. I'm an Argentinian fan who was by chance in holidays at this fascinating city, and the band has never been to my country (by the way, TA, you should come down here on tour!). So, again, when I found out they were playing, I took my only chance to see them live right away.

They did not disappoint. They were far from disappointing. The show started with a single from their new and genre-polemic album "Limitless", called "To Be Free". That was the powerful start of a powerful night. The show went on with majority of songs taken from the so acclaimed record "The Other Side", giving the night a speeded-up and powerful rythm, through both sound and lights. However, the band eventually managed to take it slow just to delight us with a couple of accoustic adapted songs, sitting down at the edge of the stage to create some sort of intimate atmosphere with the fans, inside the small and cozy O2 Forum.

The gig went on and the four singles from the new album were eventually played, but perfectly and seamlessly integrated with the ones from the previous records. The band was skillful enough to accomplish this, to the point that when "How Does It Feel" was played, it felt like it was a Tonight Alive well known classic.

"I always have a word". That is the lesson we all took home from that magic night at Kentish Town. At a specific moment, during the show, the singer Jenna took her time to pause the music for a bit and give a little speech. The main message she preached about was that we, people, always have a word in what happens in our lives. We shouldn't let other people, or even life itself, decide over our own matters. It's time we take command of our lives, do what we want to do, like what we want to like, seek what whe wish, and be who we want to be. "I always have a word. I always have a word. I always have a word." We said repeatedly, merging into a single yell, just before Tonight Alive brought their music back. This was, to me, something unique and special, but not surprising, as Jenna had recently said, in an interview, that what she wanted for fans to take from their shows is something that changes them in a certain way. The last thing she wants for fans is to go back, after the gig, and carry on with their lives just the same way, as if nothing had happened.

Suddenly, when the flow of the night felt just natural, Jenna made us all know we were approaching the end of it. (Time flies!). The band said goodbye again, full of energy, at the top of their (and our) excitement.

The sound itself was perfect. The battery, so energetic, felt as if it was been played from inside of me, and Jenna's vocals were flawless, yet full of power and emotion.

I would definetely go to see them again if I could, and anxiously look forward to a show somewhen soon in Argentina.

Tonight Alive isn't just a group of friends playing some instruments. They are some very commited and passionate people who love what they do and practice what they preach. There has been much controversy about their new sound, but I think it's just part of who they are. If we really understand the lyrics to all the songs we're used to hear from them (and always have loved!) then we also should be able to understand that this new record isn't but Tonight Alive being Tonight Alive. Not following the rules, not paying attention to the standards, not giving a damn about other people's opinion, not copying themselves, embarked in a Limitless journey, just DOING WHAT THEY WANT TO DO. That is coherence. I respect that, as well as I appreciate it.

    Thank you and keep rocking!

    Franco Cilotta ;)

  • My voice is probably not the most appreciated among the Tonight Alive fans. I only recently discovered them, about 6 months ago in March, to be exact, when I saw them as the opening act for All Time Low at the O2 Academy Brixton. Since then I have immersed myself fully in their music, thus leading me to attend their concert at The Liquid Room, Edinburgh. The venue itself is tiny, a capacity of less than 1,000 and Tonight Alive didn't sell out, there were about 300-400 of us. This allowed for an incredibly intimate show (especially for me as I was pretty much front row for its entirety), yet still bursting with an awesome energy. The setlist was perfectly varied - featuring songs from across their two albums and always encouraging the crowd to dance along with them. What stood out the most (to me, at least) was when Jenna McDougall took to the stage on her own, armed with nothing but a microphone and an acoustic guitar and performed Amelia to an entirely enthralled crowd, many of whom were moved to tears. She touchingly said that this was something she doesn't normally do - in fact, acoustic tracks are generally never performed at Tonight Alive gigs, and Jenna has said she's not very confident on the guitar, though she needn't have worried - it was a magical moment. An incredible show and I cannot wait to see them again. (For the record - the best concert I've been to, an absolute favourite.)

  • My first experience of Aussie band Tonight Alive was at The Barfly in 2012 on their debut European headline tour. From the moment they hit the stage their energy and passion was infectious.

With two successful studio albums there is no shortage of material for their live shows, including ‘What Are You So Scared Of?’ (2011) and ‘The Other Side’ (2013). They also often include songs from their 2010 EP ‘All Shapes & Disguises’ such as ‘Wasting Away’, which front-woman Jenna McDougall dedicates to “all the die-hard Tonight Alive fans”. Tonight Alive bring their own rock-edge to pop-punk, write songs from the heart and give 110% for every show, gaining them a loyal fan-base in the UK and worldwide.

What can you expect at Tonight Alive show? Plenty of energy, awesome stage presence, and a commanding performance right from the start. Songs like ‘The Fire’, ‘Breaking & Entering’ and ‘What Are You So Scared Of’ showcase the band’s energy and talent. Their video for ‘The Ocean’ best represents a Tonight Alive show; five friends living their dream and taking everyone along for the ride.

  • I knew the moment I walked into the tiny venue that the small crowd would only be filled with true fans who appreciate a talented band fronted by one of the best female rock vocalists you can find. I was not disappointed. As a fan of the band for quite some time, I find that seeing them in smaller venues really helps the sense of connection. This venue was so small that the band had to walk through the crowd to get on and off the stage. Being able to high-five the band as they took the stage was pretty freaking cool. More importantly, the close proximity really exposed the phenomenal vocals of Jenna McDougall. Not only was the performance high-energy, it felt polished and smooth from all their touring. One of best aspects of the performance was watching Jake just rock out and swing that fabulous mane of hair like a weapon slicing the air. Seeing Whakaio jump and bounce with wild abandon really got the crowd off their feet and engaged. While I have enjoyed listening to "The Other Side", being able to scream along with the crowd to each song forged a bond with the music that won't fade easily.

  • Wow just wow. Aside from the great live quality of the band, the vibe was what made this night so special. It doesn't matter how old you are, how you dress or who you love: Tonight Alive themselves and all their fans make you feel right at home. It feels like you're one big family. Like I said before, Tonight Alive make great music and when they perform it live, it's even better. Jenna's inspiring words about being yourself and believing in yourself made me feel warm inside. And about the songs themselves: Fierce and energetic poppunk that makes you wanna jump, sing and mosh. That is exactly what the band's all about. And it's also exactly what I did. Tonight Alive rocked me off my socks, made me tear up with their acoustic version of Amelia and made my body hurt in a good way. I highly recommend you to see this band live. It'll be an experience you'll never forget!

  • I've been a fan of Tonight Alive for about 5 years. It was their 10 year anniversary and this experience was absolutely amazing.I believe Tonight Alive have a one of the best connections with their fans. As well as the Tonight Alive community are very friendly to be around, every show you can easily make new friends. The two times I've been able to see them I've always never wanted to leave because Jenna, Jake, Cam and Matt (Band members) have such a cool and friendly vibe; it just makes me feel it's more than just a show. And I would love to thank them for that. Plus Tonight Alive just ROCK full stop

  • Tonight Alive was honestly one of the best gigs I've ever been to! The atmosphere was so great, not to mention the music and performance as a whole was awesome. If it wasn't enough, BOTH The Summer Set and Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! supported them, which was on another level itself as all three bands are incredible! Everyone at the gig was so amazing, and what a great encore they had with Eject! Eject! Eject!, Breaking and Entering and The Other Side, and everyone seemed to truly enjoy themselves; I cannot wait for them to return on their next UK tour, it was amazing!:):):):):):):):):)

  • One of the best experiences of my life

I went to this event at the O2 Institute2 in Birmingham with my sister and we had the best night ever. First time seeing them perform acoustic and they (especially Jenna) was brilliant and it was an amazing show. Met all 4 of the band at the end and had a chat with them about things.

Favourite moment? Listening to their songs played acoustically and understanding the words in the songs.

Describe your experience at this gig overall? Amazing experience ever.

  • All I can say is Wow. A pure honest artist with an amazing presence on stage. Tonight Alive are true performers and extremely honest in how/why they deliver.

I can honestly say I have never had as many chills, goose bumps and "teary" moments at a Gig. If there is one band you ever see in your life - it must be Tonight Alive.

I can't recommend Tonight Alive enough - not only for their music, but their passion, honesty and the way they make you feel.

    Thank You Tonight Alive.

  • I was very disappointed. Billed as an All Ages show, I brought my kids with me, youngest being 10. The singing was great, but the performer used so many F-bombs, and ended the show by flippong the bird with both hands at the audience that it detracted horribly from the professionalism a lot. I had to appologise to my kids. These people need to grow up. I will never subject my kids to a tonight alive show again. I think tonight alive needs to appologise to my kids. Boooooooo!!!!!
