  When moving from one genre to another in relatively quick fashion, you open yourself up to accusations of insincerity and following trends, but that’s not something that seemed to bother Gardens & Villa when they left behind the punk bands they’d been playing in across their hometown of Santa Barbara, California and instead pursued an altogether mellower sound, one that took a straightforward indie rock template and littered it with flashes of synthpop sounds. The real breakthrough for the band came in 2010, when they travelled to Portland, Oregon to work on their debut record with the revered Richard Swift, who’s made some of the finest indie albums of recent years; his other occupation, as a full-time touring member of The Shins, can’t have harmed Gardens & Villa either, as they went out on the road with the Sub Pop legends and played quick-fire, high-energy sets across the United States. In the UK, they’ve played on bills with the likes of Stephen Malkmus and Girls, and played in London both as support to Broken Bells and at their own, intimate show at Dalston’s Birthdays venue; expect further UK dates to follow a mammoth run of U.S. shows this coming autumn.

• Santa Barbara indie rock Gardens & Villas have been considered ones to watch since their formation in 2008 thanks to their super clean live performance and brilliant rapport as a quintet. On the back of the two albums that they have released they have toured internationally and expanded their reach and following across the globe. They appear to be having the most fantastic time at the same time which is always great to see rather than bands groggily dragging themselves onto stage night after night and playing through the same tired setlist.

  This sense of spontaneity is a big hit with the audience tonight as it keeps them on the toes and engaged with the show. As they chat to the masses candidly you cannot help but fall for their twee indie charms and irresistible tones of 'Bullet Train'. The songwriting may not be the most complexing but there is a nice road trip quality to it and a bohemian slice of their California homeland. The cover of 'Gypsy' by Fleetwood Mac fits the tone perfectly and receives the biggest cheer of the evening so far until they play the cult hit of 'Orange Blossom' to bring the show to a quietly triumphant close.
