Biografie

  • Lawrence Krisna Parker (born 20 August 1965) is an American Rapper and founding member of the influential hardcore rap group Boogie Down Production. After his stint with BDP he started a career as a solo artist under the acronym KRS-One (Knowledge Rules Supremely Over Nearly Everybody).

Parker was born and raised in the Bronx, New York, US, eventually moving out on his own at 16 to pursue a career as an MC. During this time he lived in a homeless shelter and was endowed with the nickname Krishna by his fellow residents due to his interest in the Hare Krishna faith. Parker shortly after met youth counselor Scott Sterling (DJ Scott La Rock) and formed the hip-hop group Boogie Down Productions in 1985.

With BDP he helped originate early forms of conscious rap and gangsta-hip hop. Also alongside groups like Public Enemy, he was one of the few rap artist that emphasized political issues and the gravity of social dynamics at hand.

2 years after the group’s formation they released their landmark debut “Criminal Minded”. Sterling was tragically shot and killed the same year as the album’s release, which marked an undeniably dramatic alteration in the band’s sound and style.

The line up of BDP shifted constantly with KRS-One being the only consistent member. The aggressive tones and violent themes that plagued the group’s first album were replaced by soul-tinted beats and more socially conscious lyrics. As BDP continued to release albums they became progressively more political and much of the pent up angst underlying “Criminal Minded” resurfaced, reaching an all time high for the 1992 release “Sex and Violence”.

Though BDP lasted only 5 more years after the death of Sterling, they produced an additional 4 albums and went on to influence a plethora of important rap artists like Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Redman, and Aesop Rock.

KRS-One’s studio debut “Return of the Boom Bap” came out in 1993 through Jive Records. The album reached No. 37 on the Billboard 200 and No. 5 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart and received very positive reviews amongst critics. His self-titled follow up did even better on the charts rising to No. 19 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums. This release also featured several prominent hip-hop artists of the time such as Method Man, Rakim, Mr. Magic, Jeru, The Damaja, and MC Shan. Krs-One was at the top of his game in 1997. This year he released his 3rd studio album “I Got Next” to rave reviews and widespread commercial acceptance. It became his best selling album to date peaking to No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

KRS-One went on a brief hiatus after this release, but made up for the time away with a consistent release of albums throughout the 2000s: “The Sneak Attack” (2001), “Spiritual Minded” (2002), “The Mixtape” (2002), “Kristyles (2003), “Keep Right” (2004), “Life” (2006) and “Adventures in Emceein” (2008). Also this decade KRS-One released several compilation albums such as 2000’s “A Retrospective” and 2003’s “D.I.G.I.T.A.L.”. A couple collaborative and live albums were also thrown into the mix.

He entered the next decade releasing “Back to the L.A.B. (Lyrical Ass Beating)” and followed that up with a throw back to his early hip hop days on the album “The BDP Album”. “Just Like That” and the EP “Never Forget” came out a year later.

In addition to his hip-hop career, KRS-One is also a political activist and social movement organizer. He created the “Stop the Violence Movement” in 1988/1989 in order to raise awareness of violence in the black and hip-hop communities (specifically it was a response to the death of his friend and former band mate Scott Sterling).

KRS-One has also written a book entitled “The Gospel of Hip Hop”, which is intended to be an alternative to Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. The 600 page text is considered the blue print for the rap religion.

2-12-2015 thurs. night - catalyst small intimate venue club - maybe 300 in attendance if that (a hundred more or more easily i'm sure would've attended if the show was on fri. or sat) ... i've seen krs 5 times in the past - this was the BEST ever (all past times were REALLY GOOD too but last night was just the best so far). i saw him the past times in the late 90's & once in like 2001 - now that he's older you would expect less but the blastmaster gives you more! he was raw, hard, intelligent, gritty & just kickin straight classics & knowledge & feelin the crowd from start to finish! he had to straight check the dj's a few times & told em' straight up "hold up man i don't fuck with serato" lol & kept tellin them to turn the music up or down & to switch certain beats & what not (didn't affect liveness or flow of show at all, he was just like yo i need things a dertain way & yall need to adapt asap!!! they were like the in-house dj's & even they were good but obviously didn't have a set planned out with krs beforehand - all worked out fine though as he wasn't dissin em just more like "yo come on my man's" haha). krs freestyled for like the first ten min - straight dopeness. did one straight into my sons camera about my son having on a BDP sweatshirt & how he respected that & saw it since earlier, & that gave my 16 yr. old son an awesome lifetime memory! krs was in goin-hard form from start to finish, incorporating knowledge into the set with freestyles & a couple songs as opposed to preaching anything. he then allowed like 7 mc's from the crowd to get on stage & freestyle with him! rounding out the night coming down into the crowd taking pics & signing autographs with EVERYONE !!! i would give the show a 10 out of 10 hands down from a performance, got your moneys worth, krs put it down hard perspective ... a 7.5 from a venue's sound system perspective - could of been a bit louder / cleaner sound system & krs expressed that & wanted it !!! DO NOT BE FOOLED by naysayers, non believers, or internet/couch critics who think somehow now that the BLASTMASTER is older he is more preachy or not as good at his MUSIC PERFORMANCES/SHOWS - he is AS DOPE/HARD/RAW/REAL/ENERGETIC & IN YOUR FACE AS EVER IF NOT MORE!!! DO NOT MISS HIM NEXT TIME HE'S IN YOUR AREA AS HIS APPEARANCES ARE BECOMING MORE RARE!!! (we travelled 150 miles to see him - not bad but still a 2.5-3 hr drive!)

  • KRS-One has been one of my favorite rappers for quite some time. I think he's been one of my favorites ever since my teacher in 9th grade introduced me to him. He is a very outspoken dude, we hold some of the same opinions when it comes to politics and world affairs, which, to be honest, surprised the hell out of me. Its very rare to see a rapper, or celebrity in general for that matter, who is so interested and outspoken in politics.

Because of this, I was super excited to go see him perform live in concert a couple years back. I went with 2 of my friends who are also big fans of him. We had a great time there, the crowd was hype, KRS was hype, it was great. A lot of his songs are about how he grew up. He paints picture for his fans lyrically, and they're great. When I was there, there was about 500-1500 people outside in the crowd. The stage was nothing special, but it didn't have to be to make the concert great. Everyone there enjoyed it from what I could see, especially my friends and I. Great concert.

  • The All Stars of Hip-Hop was an overall great concert. Unfortunately the venue is not designed for musical events so the sound quality was poor. The fact that the promoters were able to assemble 19 acts to perform on one stage in one evening is an amazing feat. Seeing The Get Fresh Crew reunited was great as Doug E Fresh proved he is the world’s greatest entertainer. Big Daddy Kane showed that he can still perform at a high level. MC Lyte gave an awesome performance with only a drummer a dj which showed her talent. KRS-ONE clearly demonstrated why he is a TRUE MC. He switched his playlist mid performance to meet the vibe of the audience. He seamlessly blended classics with thought provoking lyrics.

  • It took almost 30 years but I finally got to see The Teacher. The 10 hour drive was well worth it. Best show I've seen in decades if not ever. He is called the "Blaster Master" for a reason. From the time he stepped on stage until the end, it was nothing but energy. I will say that maybe it wasn't the best venue to see him perform. When (not if) I see him again, it will be in a spot where there is an open floor up front. Tables and chairs in front of the stage changes the energy of the show. You should be standing up an move when you receive the lessons. Still, KRS-One stands alone when it comes to moving the crowd. I can't wait to see him again!

  • The performance was amazing and it feels very personal like he's performing just for you. The songs were great, but the freestyles really took the whole night to another level. Freestyling about metaphysics for several minutes, taking selfies with everyone in the crowd and freestlying about it at the same time, and then just plain bars!! He even had all the mc's come up and cypher with him at the end and freestyle with him. It was a very entertaining, personal, and thought provoking performance!

  • I've been to about 20 concerts and this was the best. KRS-One REALLY puts in the effort to make a good show. Way better than lazy Snoop Dogg by a factor of 10. Pay a bit extra to meet him before the show. He's super down to earth, cool guy and rather than 10% of an album price going to him, this actually gets into his pocket, showing your support and appreciate. I'll definitely go again next time he's around.
