Biografie

  • Underoath (formed in 1997) is a Grammy-nominated American Christian post-hardcore band, that delivers energetic live shows noted for their emo and metalcore influences, hailing from Tampa, Florida, U.S.

With a name drawn from “somewhere from the bible”, Underoath was formed by singer Dallas Taylor and guitarist Luke Morton in 1997. Fellow church attendee Aaron Gillespie was later invited to join the group on drums, followed by guitarist Corey Steger and bassist Octavio Fernandez during their time in high school. Following a series of festival appearances and local shows in Florida, the band ignore to Takehold Records in 1999 and released their debut full-length “Act of Depression” the same year. The record combined the Christian metal, death metal, and black metal genres, and marked the departure of guitarist Luke Morton.

The five-track full-length studio album “Cries of the Past” arrived in July 2000, extolled by music critics and featuring keyboard player Christopher Dudley. Following a Takehold Records merger with Seattle-based label Tooth & Nail/Solid State, Underoath returned to the studio, the fruit of which marked the group’s most experienced and progressive record to date. Released in February 2003, “The Changing of Times” received positive reviews from the press for its hardcore approach combined with indie rock, loop pedals and melodic vocal harmonies. To the surprise of fellow band mates and a host of fans, vocalist Dennis Taylor left the group during their 2013 Warped Tour, leaving Underoath’s longevity in doubt.

However, with the addition of bassist Grant Brandell, guitarist James Smith and vocalist Spencer Chamberlain, the band persevered to release “They’re Only Chasing Safety” in June 2004. Produced by longterm producer James Paul Wisner, the record again saw a shift in direction compared to its predecessors, with the band adopting a decidedly screamo approach. Led by the singles “Reinventing Yourself” and “It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Font Door”, the album proved hugely popular among critics, and won a Dove nomination for Best Rock Album.

The much heavier full-length “Define the Great Line” followed in June 2006, marked by complex time signatures and apt ambience. Peaking at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200, it was their highest charting album to date, as well as the highest charting Christian album since LeAnn Rimes’s “You Light Up My Life”."Lost in the Sound of Separation” hit the shelves in 2008 featuring a darker, more experimental sound, followed by Ø (Disambiguation)” in 2009.

  • Underoath

Just saw them in SLC. They played an hour-and-a-half set and every song sounded exactly like the album version. They got much better since I last saw them with BMTH, so they're definitely back to 100% of their old talent. They played songs from every era all the way back to The Changing of Times.

Their production value is always above average, but this tour (Erase Me) was on a whole other level. The light display was fantastic and paired very well with the flavor audio between songs.

A cool tidbit, they switched guitars and basses depending on what era they were playing. When they played modern Ø they used matching neon green instruments and when they played old Ø they used guitars that looked like they'd be in a 2007 emo music video. It was a cute touch and I appreciated it.

The audience interaction was amazing as well. My favorite is when someone asked them to play Cries of the Past and Spencer pointed at him and said "No one knows that song, you're the only one that does." It was also really funny when the whole crowd sang to Aaron's son for his birthday.

On the topic of his son, it was really funny when people left early because Spencer called them out and said "A 7 year old can stay up later than you." I loved that. I love when the artist singles people out when they're leaving. It happened to me at a Logic concert and I thought it was hilarious.

This was my 5th UØ concert and hopefully not my last. 07, 08, 15, 16, 18. Please don't stop. Ever.

  • When Underoath broke up in 2013, I promised myself that (should there ever be a reunion tour) I would seize my chance to see them play live again at any cost. Despite being a fan for years at that point, I'd never been able to get to a show. So when this reunion tour was announced, I got a ticket without a second thought, and had no idea what I'd be in for. That was fine - my wildest imaginings couldn't have done it any justice.

The energy, anticipation, and reverence of the crowd was palpable from the moment the lights dimmed. There were hundreds of people in that room, but the shared loyalty to the band over that three year absence was so present that the space felt practically intimate. When the band started playing, even they were in on that feeling. The House of Blues was a temple that night, and everyone in it was having a religious experience, coming together to celebrate the music we loved.

Of course, the music itself: they played "They're Only Chasing Safety" and "Define the Great Line" in their entirety. The sound quality was great (the mixing was some of the best I'd ever heard), the effects kept the mood perfectly, and the band played their hearts out.

I went into the show thinking it would be the show of a lifetime, but I never anticipated how absolutely true that would be.

  • You don't expect a hardcore band to come out of a small town in rural Florida but Underoath is out to prove you wrong. Not only are they hardcore but their songs are all about Jesus and Christianity.

While watching them in Philly, they were quick to show that they were humble, appreciative and simply wanted to spread the word about God in the format of music they loved. It was a tremendous experience as they rocked a crowd of hundreds with their hard drumming and screaming vocals.

A mosh pit formed all while the band exploded with two intertwined vocals during one of their most loved hits Writing on the Walls. They absolutely left everything on stage with no extra props, lighting or special effects. This show was purely about the music and you can feel it as every single band member sweated and rocked every single amazing song on their set list.

The crowd gave back as they ignited within the arena moving together in such a way that I thought the entire building was being jostled around. Nothing is more fantastic than being in a packed venue with a bunch of fans all to enjoy a great band. Except when that band is exceptional live and really helps you understand what live music is all about. Underoath delivered their audience an experience and an unforgettable one at that.

  • This was hands down the best concert I have been to in years. The bands all sounded amazing. My meet and greet with Underøath really took my breath away I was able to thank each band member for taking the time to come play for us plus taking time out to meet us. I also had extra time to give an extra special thank you to the lead singer for his honesty with his struggles back in May when we seen them. I too have been struggling and I finally found my hope and courage to get help. He truly saved my life that night. And that I can never forget I love this band like no other and I’m so glad they are together and rocking again

  • Show was absolutely outstanding !! So glad they have come back together and created this art work Erase Me. So much meaning and passion.

This guys put on a killer show. Never a disappointment live. And I can’t wait to see them again.

    Love love love Underoath !!

Had the chance to meet prior to the show and express my graditude, I know they never knew that their lyrics have taken me from my dark place many times in the past. Later in the night Spencer broke down to confess some of his own darkness and its good to know your truly alone and this music they share with us is exactly about that.

  • We walked through a local fair to get to the back and were met with quite a line. After a bit of waiting we were able to go through the gate, and it was definitely worth it. The opener, Beartooth, and the headliner, Bring Me The Horizon, both put on shows, but in my biased opinion, UNDEROATH stole the show. Every aspect sounded fine tuned and classy; they played with gusto and groove. Phenomenal performance
