The Scottish electronic duo - electronic acts are always duos, aren’t they? - had scarcely been heard of since 2006 before resurfacing last year; in typical fashion, though, the notoriously publicity-shy pair didn’t just pop back up with a catchy new single. Instead, they released a single - just the one copy of it - on Record Store Day 2013, by the name of ------/------/------/xxxxxx/------/------, which frankly rolls off the tongue. A code enclosed within that record would be combined with various others released through the media and online, and the plan for a new album - Tomorrow’s Harvest - would eventually become clear. The record met, as is par for the course for Boards of Canada, with rave reviews, but they’ve yet to actually tour it; their live activity has been pretty limited for a number of years now. When asked by The Guardian about hitting the road, they replied “never say never”, but should that actually come to fruition, it’s difficult to know what to expect; on past evidence, the duo will maintain their enigmatic presence on stage, instead shifting the focus onto experimental live sets that will chop and change between old and new material. Knowing Boards of Canada, though, they’ll probably do the opposite; second-guessing them is seldom wise.
