Biografie

  • Forming in 1968 and originating in Oakland, California, USA, Tower of Power are a rhythm and blues band best known for their brass section, who have become some of the most successful and most prolific collaborators in R& B history.

Tower of Power might be responsible for some of the most fantastic sounds in soul, R&B and rock music, while never quite getting the recognition they deserve for that. They were formed out of a chance meeting between Emilio Castillo and Stephen “Doc” Kupka, the future tenor and baritone saxophonists of the band, respectively.

The band were originally put together under the name The Motowns. However, after Castillo realized he would never get his band headlining San Francisco’s iconic Fillmore Auditorium with that name, they soon switched it to Tower Of Power. A name literally picked from a list of weird band names because he thought it described them the best.

With the new name in place and a solid line up found, the band were finally on their way. They signed to Billy Graham’s San Francisco Records in 1970 and released their debut record “East Bay Grease” soon afterwards. However it wasn’t until 1972 and a new lead vocalist in the form of Rick Stevens, that the band started getting honest to goodness hits in the form of “So Very Hard To Go” and “What Is Hip?”.

However, what made Tower of Power stand out was their horn section, and they went on to work with the likes of Aerosmith, Heart, Grateful Dead and John Lee Hooker in their own right while the band were still at the top of their game. The band still tour to this day and have still got it in spades. They’re an indispensable part of music’s history, and every true music fan would do well to see them as soon as possible.

  • Tower of Power

Tower of Power is arguably one of the biggest names in soul, funk and R&B. They have one of the most defining horn sections; four to the floor drum beats and syncopated bass lines. Definitely pioneers of a very memorable sound. This audience cannot wait for what they perform tonight, myself included. I cannot wait to have a boogie with my notepad and pencil. The singles that they have produced are second to none with such a fantastic vibe accompanying them; every song fills a dance floor.

The disco troupe open with “So Very Hard to Go” which reached number 17 in 1973. This of course is no surprise with the huge audience reaction, which they receive throughout the whole set. Lenny Williams is such a good front man, keeping everyone happy throughout, making sure everyone is on their feet, singing along throughout the set. I have to quickly just give a mention to their horn section, which to hear live is quite simply a force to be reckoned with. They have featured on so many pop records working with artists such as The Monkees, Grateful Dead, Huey Lewis and the News, Toto and Aerosmith. To be in the presence of them is just incredible.

  • Band is Fantastic! Venue sound SUX! After 47 years, Tower of Power still brings the funk and the energy to every performance. Not a weak moment in the show, and even with an encore, they left us wanting more. If you want to go to a concert where you get to stand and dance in the aisles, Tower of Power should be at the top of your list! But don't waste your money going to the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. Its an acoustic cesspool, where the sound is worse as you get closer the stage! I moved to several open seats to try to find a place where I could hear all the players in the band, and not surprisingly, the only halfway decent sound was right next to the Sound Mixer booth in the back of the theatre, duh! In my seats on the first row, all you could hear was the painfully loud thud of the bass drum and the back-wash of muddy echo coming from the back wall of the theatre. Even after complaining to the Sound Man, their only solution was to turn volume up louder. This theatre sound SUX!

  • Tower of Power the group was fantastic. I was however, very disappointed in the sound mix.

TOP is a 5 hour piece group and a lot of their songs feature the horns. Well the mix was horrible. I could barely hear the horns.

As I got closer to the stage, I could hear the stage mix and that sounded good but the main mix was poor

I also couldn't help but think while watching the lead singer that I was watching Kevin Hart. He was ok but fair when it comes to the TOP long list of lead vocalists

  • Band is still "on it" and relevant. New frontman (Marcus Scott) ensures the stage energy, though Emilio's energy and dancing on stage are truly insuring. This band is NOT "going through the motions". They love playing and bringing joy to the appreciative audience. Was great to hear they have another CD queued for end-of-the-year release, as their current release can be argued as their best every compilation (my opion) ... Stay healthy T.O.P. & com back more often !!!!

  • Finally! I grew up in San Francisco during the 60's-70's. Lived in the Noe Valley, and Mission District. Enjoyed free concerts outside of Mission High School, because the majority of the musicians we all came from the neighbor and culture.

Throughout the years; while stationed..if driving less than 200 miles and couple of us would drive to attend.

While there have been new members...the ntet and memories are the same>

  • Mesmerising! Legendary horn section that gave you goose pimples, August rhythm section & unsung bassist & an amazing new singer (girls- easy on the eye!) that changes TOP's sound slight making it more contemporary. I'm tending to lean towards the older singers

There are a well oiled machine & I jumped at the chance as they have never been to Melbourne. What a blast!!!

  • The East Bay Boys played s new line up of old Funk and Soul and the the roof off the house. Marcus Scott is coming in to his own and the Horn section was as awesome as ever. Jerry Cortez had s few solo rigs and torn down the house, it was awesome.

Great venue, small and comfortable, great acoustics. Tower of Power was live and in living color.

  • Their concert was swinging as last time in the Melkweg. Always having fun and entertaining the audience. And their new singer, Ray Greene, is wonderful. Had a great time and did not notice that when they first left the stage for an encore they had been playing for two hours already! See you next time you are around, Emilio and friends!

  • Have seen TOP 4 times in the past 3 years. Always amazing. They're better than they've ever been. Marcus Scott on vocals is one of their top 1 or 2 singers ever, and they've had a bunch of great ones. Go see them! A treasure of SOUL music. And the best horn section of all time.
