Biografie

  • Metronomy are an English electronic group from Devon and Totnes, which began as the solo project of frontman Joe Mount in 1999.

It’s funny how many great bands seem to start off as little more than a bedroom project, but Metronomy are one such outfit; Joe Mount had been messing around with making music under the name for quite some time - starting in the late nineties and early noughties, whilst he was still living with his parents in south-west England - before he was finally able to put the moniker to an album release proper; “Nights Out”, released in September 2008, might not have been the band’s debut album - that accolade fell to the strangely-titled “Pip Paine (Pay the £5000 You Owe)” - but it was the album that announced Metronomy’s subtle, low-key blend of synthpop and electronica to the alternative music world, and carved them out a cult fanbase in the process.

What it wasn’t, though, was Metronomy’s breakthrough; instead, it was album number three that could claim that title, as “The English Riviera” - released in April 2011 - met with rave reviews and earned a Mercury Prize nomination later that year. Its success was down in no small part to the increased confidence on stage that the band had been displaying, as they’d finally managed to nail down a consistent lineup that included Anna Prior behind the drum kit and Gbenga Adelekan on bass. They built upon their burgeoning reputation in March 2014 with “Love Letters”, another rapturously received full-length; there’s no real question that they’re one of Britain’s best-loved cult bands.

  • Metronomy

Magnificent Metronomy's majestic music mesmerises the minds of mere mortals. Before this wonderful band from Devon made their way into my life, and onto my iPod, I wouldn't go near electronic music with a metaphorical barge pole. However, a mix between funky bass lines, memorable keyboard riffs and the stage presence of Joe, Oscar, Olugbenga and Anna has won me over, as well as opening my mind to another world of music. As far as their albums that are performed live are concerned, each is a giant leap in a new direction. ‘Nights Out’ had an industrial sound to it, similar to the works of Kraftwerk before them, whereas ‘The English Riviera’ has a more refined feel to the LP, playing host to arguably their most famous song, ‘The Look.' Their latest release, ‘Love Letters,' presents some almost new-age disco tracks which just shows the vast distance between their present work and when they’d started, whilst keeping the essence that makes these guys such a unique and brilliant band. There is the common pre-conception that some groups cannot replicate the studio recordings as well when playing to live audiences… Metronomy are most certainly not one of these bands. It’s almost as if they thrive off the encouragement of the crowd and pressure to hit every single note. Stood in front of them, you just can’t avert your eyes as the captivating light show as well as the jolly smiles and atmosphere of everything around you just draws you in, making you feel one with the beat. They can play venues from a small club to a festival stage and the experience is just as special.

  • I was loooking forward to this gig as I had only seen them briefly at Glastonbury and was very underwhelmed. I thought it might be a much better atmosphere with their own headliner at a venue like Brixton. Although the sound was brilliantly mixed and the band was impressively tight, the performance was about as entertaining as a custard cream. Once again the Joe Mount's stage presence was practically non existent, he often looked like he was just going through the motions. It didn't feel like this was a man who was really appreciating the magic of the moment. A real shame, seeing as his fans were trying to get the party started at the front row. Anna Prior's drumming was fantastic and she is definitely the most appealing of the members. Keys were solid and had a wonderful live tone but it just felt very static for a band with so much groove and fun in their sound. 2.5 out of 5

  • As always, Metronomy knows how what the X factor of a live performance is, over just playing the album or the hits. Keeping a nice balance between the older stuff, big hits and the new album, the crew tweaks every song to make it special for the night on the stage. It makes every Metronomy show a special occassion. I for one noticed how I didn't really feel the songs of the new album when played over the stereo, but the live version were more upbeat, catchier and the playfulness of the band when performing them really infectious. On relistening the album, I have found a different appreciation for the work.

Metronomy is a joy to witness live and this night at De Melkweg was no exception.

  • They were amazing! I didn't think much of the support act who unfortunately failed to create an atmosphere but the minute Metronomy came on, it went off. The Bass player was phenomenal and for my first time seeing them, I certainly wanted more and defo want to see them again.

The following day I had 'The Look' as my ear worm which was, I think, by far their best tune with 16 Beat close behind.

They ended with 'My Way' which was awesome but I think maybe a more energetic song would've been better. Still by far a brilliant gig, they were sooogood live.

  • Fantastic show at a fantastic venue. Some bands play through their latest album track by track, not Metronomy. They mixed up the favourites reinterpreting them as appropriate. The songs performed live were equal to the recorded versions and yet they went beyond them with the sheer energy in which they were delivered. This energy was infectious and spread among the receptive crowd. It was a great night and I would definitely see Metronomy again, if anything to hear the songs they didn’t play!!!

  • I have been following Metronomy for the past 8 years (8 years!!) of my life, but this was my first time seeing them live. SWEET LORD.

The gig itself was planned as a crossing among all their albums: to listen to songs from "Pip Paine" was nothing but a JOY. No need to mention the sheer perfection of the performance itself, because it's been more than 2 months from the concert and I feel I'm still reeling.

Can't wait for other chances of seeing Metronomy live!

  • The band, their energy, together with the crowd made a really nice environment and show.

2 Things to point out, but about the venue, they sold too many tickets, there's was barely any space at all, we were a massive can of sardines basically. This is not a good practice at all. The sound was also quite bad during some songs, especially on the vocals.

Despite this, the show was not ruined and Metronomy managed to be great!

  • last time I saw them was at Wedgewood rooms in Portsmouth.

This was a bigger production, had controllable frosted glass in front of the synths and drums.

played all the tunes, more dance version of reservoir. when they do love letter live the vocals always put me off cause he sings different to the alb (can't hit the notes?)

    v solid gig

  • A great gig! Lots of tracks from albums English Riviera and Love Letters, played with more vibrancy than in the studio; a well behaved and happy audience danced & waved along to the more bouncy tracks. All the band members visibly enjoyed themselves which meant they are enjoyable to watch too. Thoroughly recommended!!!

  • I've been to a lot of concerts in my life and I have to say Metronomy put on a really great show. They looked fantastic, were well put together and knew what they were doing. They sounded true to their cd's and took the time to chat with the audience a bit. They were definitely the most classy band I've seen.
