Biography

  • The Dear Hunter (formed in 2005) is an American progressive rock band, formed by Casey Crescenzo, hailing from Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.

Prior to forming The Dear Hunter, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Casey Crescenzo became a respected musician in the Boston music scene and was subsequently invited to join the emo band The Receiving End of Sirens. During his time with the band it was not only Crescenzo’s guitar playing that raised eyebrows, but also his soaring vocals and poetic songwriting style. Initially formed as an outlet for ideas not appropriate for The Receiving End of Sirens, by 2006 The Dear Hunter had become Crescenzo’s full-time band. Following the EP “Dear Ms. Leading” issued to test the water for future releases, The Dear Hunter released its debut album “Act I: The Lake South, The River North” in September 2006. The album received strong reviews from the critical press and envisioned as the first of six acts to follow the same story.

“Act II: The Meaning of, and All Things Regarding Ms. Leading” followed in 2007 extolled by the musical press. Initially a 120 minute album, Crescenzo whittled the album down to 80 minutes, strongly utilising the demos made before the first Dear Hunter release. In 2009 “Act III: Life and Death” was released once again earning unrivalled reviews. Taking the story further to new extremes, Crescenzo narrative documents the feelings of loss, relief, hope and love, which aided the album crack the Billboard 200 landing at No. 182.

Choosing to focus in a new conceptual direction, The Dear Hunter’s subsequent release was the collection of EPs entitled “The Color Spectrum”. Released in June 2011 the release is comprised of nine EPs relating to the individual colors of the visual color spectrum, which were ultimately collated into a full-length album of 11 tracks. The studio album “Migrant” followed in April 2013 with production from Mike Watts released on Equal Vision Records.

Live reviews

  • The Dear Hunter

What to say about the Dear Hunter and Rx Bandit's show last night... EPIC? Yeah, I think that about sums it up. Teamed up with the ever prescient RX Bandits freshly back on tour after a multi-year hiatus, the two bands were simply amazing to see live. RXB opened with a righteous onslaught of new and old material. With their newest album "Gemini, Her Majesty" released just a day before the show, they brought it harder than I had ever seen before. While the beloved horn section was missing - Embree, Choi, et al - kept it interesting by implementing new guitar/keyboard parts in place of the horns. It was a slimmed down version of the band, but tight as ever. It was as if they didn't even take any time off at all. The Dear Hunter took the stage thereafter, playing a smattering off of all of their theatrically themed albums. I had never seen them on stage before, even after following the studio albums since Act 1. Needless to say, the six-piece rocked the shit out of the place. The band shied away from their confusing album "Color Spectrum", which I thought was a good thing. They stayed on-point with the darker material, reminding me of Casey's Receiving End of Sirens days. All in all, another great show at the Paradise. While the matchup of RXB and the Dear Hunter is a bit wacky, they're both extremely talented bands with some of the coolest audiences I've ever seen.

  • Incredibly, intricately theatrical both through your speakers and as a live six-piece band, The Dear Hunter certainly know how to put on a good show. The progressive rock band formed in 2005 as the brainchild of guitarist/ pianist/ vocalist frontman Casey Crescenzo, after his previous band, The Receiving End Of Sirens, broke up. Crescenzo originally formed The Dear Hunter's music- with its old-time feel, heavy guitars and banging piano beats- as an epically told semi-autobiographical fable, told through the first three 'Acts' of their albums.

While Crescenzo is clearly the originator and supplies a huge amount of creative input and intimately told lyrics, the current line-up of the rest of the band's members are of such a high musical standard that the flow and energy of each song really take you on a journey through time, and their show is a delight to witness live.

The Dear Hunter make some of the most original, nothing-else-like-it-around on the progressive and experimental rock scene today, while keeping all their songs- such as the singalong hit 'Lillian' and the epically theatrical 'He Said He Had A Story'- catchy and fun enough for anyone with ears to enjoy. Their set at the Fillmore Silver Spring this year was a jaw-dropping, arm-waving, foot-stamping riot- don't miss The Dear Hunter live!

  • If you like the Dear Hunter then you're going to have a great time. They're too unique of a sound to not enjoy. That said, both times I've seen them they take a really really long time to setup and begin playing and they play a really long and really loud set. I frequent concerts and am familiar with the general volume of shows this size. They are loud. 3 Bands takes 5 hours. Even with these faults, they still rock once they get going and they're very humble and respectful to the audience.

  • The show was absolutely phenomenal. Casey's voice is the embodiment of Christ I don't know how he does it. They were going nuts on stage and you could feel their energy. I wish they performed longer but I can't blame them, most of their songs are long and very meticulous. After the show me and my boyfriend met Casey and he was honestly one of the kindest people I've ever met. The tickets were definitely worth the money and I would absolutely see them again.

  • Ah, Dear Hunter. I wish your sound was setup properly so I could have enjoyed your energy and talent! Instead, the backup vocals were louder than the lead - and even when it was just the lead singing, many times he was too far away from the mic.

Also, I suggest mixing it up a little. Add something unexpected. Something new. Give the people something they can't get from just listening to your music at home.

  • I had high expectations for the concert and despite these expectations, I was completely blown away. Their sound was even more impressive in person with remarkable emotion in every song. Easily the greatest concert experience I've ever experienced.
