Biography

  • Engelbert Humperdinck (born Arnold George Dorsey on 2nd May 1936) is an English singer, born in Madras, India and raised in Leicester, England.

Having released his debut single, ‘I’ll Never Fall in Love Again’, as long ago as 1958, there’s little question that Engelbert Humperdinck is one of Britain’s most enduring pop singers; in addition, he’s often been one of the most embattled, battling through early failures to eventually cement his place as one of England’s best-loved pop figures in the 1960s. It was during that time that he scored his biggest hits; ‘Release Me’ kept The Beatles at bay in March and April 1967 when it topped the charts ahead of ‘Penny Lane’, whilst sold over a million copies that same year, also reaching the summit of the singles rundown. It earned Humperdinck a reputation as a crooner, something he’s fiercely denied - “I can hit notes a bank couldn’t cash.”

He went on to enjoy success in the U.S., too, particularly in the seventies, and continues to record and perform today - his most recent significant public exposure in the UK, though, came when he represented the country at the Eurovision Song Contest in Azerbaijan in 2012; he suffered the ignominy of finishing twenty-fifth out of twenty-six contestants, with a new composition, ‘Love Will Set You Free’, failing to capture the imagination of the voters.

Live reviews

  • Engelbert Humperdinck

Lets face it the popularity of crooner pop that dominated the music charts in the 50s and 60s started to die out when hard rock entered the mainstream. In the 80s orchestras were being displaced by synthesizers; however, the genre of operatic pop is one that can't be easily forgotten nor replaced. There are few if any modern musicians that can capture this classic operatic pop sound. So if you want to hear this style there is a good chance you are going to have to hear it from the pros themselves. Engelbert Humperdink is one of these pros and his live shows do not disappoint. His voice is rich and focused and delivered with such suave that the hearts of the audience will melt away. Humperdinck is in his late 70s but delivers performances that surpass the hour and a half marker. He takes the audience throughout his career highlighting such hits as "Blue Spanish Eyes", "Release Me" and "I Can't Stop Loving You". He even threw in some surprising cover songs as well. He put an interesting spin on rock classics like "Something" by the Beatles and "I'm On Fire" by Bruce Springsteen.

Engelbert not only knows how to pick a setlist he also knows how to organize an amazing backing band. The sheer size of the musicians accompanying him was absolutely incredible. He literally has an entire orchestra at his disposal and if thats not enough he tops it off with a touring choir. These broad range of musicians fill the concert hall with deep rich tones that simply can not be created by anything but an orchestra. During "Blue Spanish Eyes" flamenco guitars were sounding, the tap of wood blocks resonated throughout the venue as well as other interesting percussion instruments, a massive string section underscored and helped build the intensity behind Humperdinck's vocal delivery and the brass section gave the overall composition a needed punch.

These types of performances have become few far and in between and this is not due to loss of demand or a lack of musical impact. It is primarily related to the amount of effort and manpower required to pull off such a feat. However if you do get a chance to witness one of these shows I think you would agree that it is well worth the investment.

  • A lovely way to spend an evening with Engelbert, the King of Romance.

That is the opening song of the concert that touches the hearts of his fans and relives the iconic moment of his concert in the Royal Albert Hall in London. It was absolute magic for this fan of forty eight years. I was torn between tears of happiness and applauding for my favorite entertainer.

Enge smoothly moved into another fan favorite "Too Beautiful to Last", I was blown away, this is my absolute favorite song. His interpretation was spot on! By this time, I was thrilled beyond belief!

Enge also did a medley of his greatest songs, absolutely fantastic. I was in heaven and could barely breathe with excitement! I adore this man from the time I was a young girl and he always delivers the romance!

Enge does some impressions of Willy Nelson, Tom Jones and Dean Martin. He really delivers on their sound and physical mannerisms. He is so much fun!!!!!

It was a great concert with a consummate entertainer and worth the price of the golden circle tickets.

  • On January 23rd it was the worst evening to attend an event I have ever experienced, not only did it take 90 minutes to get there, the traffic inside the Parker playhouse was ridiculous this should never have happened at 7:35 in the evening there was still over two hundred cars ahead of me for parking I said the hell with it and I lost $260 because of your disgusting parking system, this was a real horror story and I missed a show that I've been waiting for since September of last year the Parker playhouse should be closed down until renovations are complete I lost all my money and that's the name of that tune and I never got to see Engelbert Humperdinck this was the most disgusting experience I've ever had, if I have the opportunity I am going to hit every news bureau in South Florida

  • What a show !

It was a very pleasant evening listening Engelbert and his band !

I came all the way with my wife, from Portugal to Manchester to see a live concert with Ennge, a dream that came true since I was a teenager !

I was surprised how Engelbert still keeps in good shape with his fantastic voice !

Unfortunately the only thing I missed was a souvenir from Engelbert, as the only CD available was Calling (duets) and I have bought sometime ago.

    Anyway what a night !!!

    Congratulations Engelbert !

  • The band and back up singers were good but the singer EH - you could not understand the words of the songs.

    Disappointed

I saw him in Spokane Northern Quest casino back in 2009 or 2010 and he was super but this time - he may be feeling the age bit. I was not the only one that said they could not make our words in the songs. He did not enunciate clearly - he held the mic too far away - maybe to cover the fact that he was not enunciating clearly or maybe he needs o hold it closer so that we can hear the words

A true performer, the audience singing along to his mega hits and thrilled by his renditions of modern and classic songs by other artists. He gave us a glimpse of his new album ...super excited to get our copy soon! The duet with his grand daughter is out of this world. GO SEE ENGLEBERT. Thank you so much Englebert. CHEERS! • I have followed Engelbert for many years. Have seen many concerts! I lived in the US most of my life, where

i saw him performing on the east coast and the west coast. I then lived in London, and was lucky to have seen him perform there. I now live in Paris and travelled back to london to see him. I am 82 years old

and always loved hearing him sing even as a much younger woman. I do travel to the US and i am hoping to see him perform again.

  • Engelbert's show was excellent. He is an artist at what he does. At one point in the show he sang a song and he got very emotional. The song was about his wife and how they shared special moments together. It shows he is a man and not scared to show his emotions with his fans. We support Engelbert and pray for him and his wife every day. I will go and see Engelbert as long as he performs. He is a perfectionist in everything he does.

  • Enjoyed seeing Engelbert at Harrah's Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey on October 10, 2015. He always puts on a GREAT show. I only wish while singing the songs he would go all the way over to the right and left on the stage.I have seen him many times, but not fortunate to get tickets in the center front sections.

Hope to see him again when he returns to Atlantic City.
