Biography

  • Timber Timbre is a Canadian psychedelic folk group, featuring Taylor Kirk, Simon Trottier, Mathieu Charbonneau and Olivier Fairfield originating from Toronto and Montréal.

The band's name origins comes from to an early series of recordings made in a timber-framed cabin set in the wooded outskirts of Bobcaygeon, Ontario. Their first two albums 'Cedar Shakes' and 'Medicinals' were released independently and gained the band moderate attention and critical notoriety. In January 2009, the band signed to Out of This Spark for the release of their self titled album which was a critical success due to being named as a long list nominee for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize and album of the year by Eye Weekly.

Quite a few tracks from this album were used in mainstream media; 'Magic Arrow' was featured in the television show Breaking Bad, in the episode "Caballo Sin Nombre", as well as in the TV series The Good Wife, in the episode "Bitcoin for Dummies". 'Black Water' is included on the soundtrack for the 2012 comedy, 'For a Good Time, Call...' and the song 'Demon Host' was featured in the end credits to the 2013 film 'The Last Exorcism Part II'. The band's fourth album, 'Creep On Creepin' On' was released in April 2011. The album was named as one of ten shortlisted nominees for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize. These accolades landed the band the opportunity to support British folk singer Laura Marling on her UK tour and Canadian singer Feist on her tour of America in 2012.

The band's fifth record, Hot Dreams, was released April 1, 2014 and was once again shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize.

Live reviews

  • Timber Timbre is an amazing group of members within the Canadian Group Music project. With Taylor Kirk, Simon Trottier, Mika Posen, Mathieu Charbonneau and Oliver Fairfield, the band has a very unique sound that any audience is sure to enjoy.

Their first album "Out of this Spark" was released in 2009 and was nominated for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize, it was also named album of the year by Eye Weekly. The band has also had songs featured on some very popular television shows, including The Good Wife and Breaking Bad. In 2014, Timber Timbre held a NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert in which they all sat around a tiny desk and played an intimate selection of fantastic songs.

The stage may be small, but the sound is large. These songs included "Hot Dreams," "Run From Me," and "Grand Canyon." Timber Timbre has a soulful sound that is unlike any other.

Their songs feature passion and fabulously heartfelt lyrics and rhythms. The audience is able to sit back and relax to the gentle sounds from Timber Timbre. The rich composition of the musicality has the audience constantly applauding--during the appropriate times--and swaying back and forth to the wonderful beats. Timber Timbre is a band that any music lover is sure to enjoy.

  • This show was so rad. I would go again in an instant. The lead singer looked nothing like I was expecting but he is a goddamn rockstar and entertainer. The whole band just looks like they love what the are doing, which they should since this is fantastic music. The drummer had moments of pure euphoria on his face as they were jamming. Such a delight to see. This wonderful mix of folk, rock, and psychedelia had me feeling high even though I was completely sober.

The interaction with the audience was fun and in one funny moment, a drunk girl in the front row was filming a song with the damn light on her phone. The lead singer didn't like this blinding light shining in his face, so he says "hey! You can't do that!", and takes the girls phone. She didn't understand why.. Later she pulled the same stunt (blinding light in face) and this ended with her phone getting tossed over some speakers on stage by the lead singer. Boss.

Overall I'd give the show a 9/10. With so many great songs in already in their catalog I would've chosen a slightly different track list, but everything they played was really good to aahhmmaazzing.

  • Who doesn't love psychedelica and folk? Canadian outfit Timber Timbre have forged a career on this unlikely merger since 2005 and it is a more popular genre than many realise when you look back through history. The four musicians completely invest in the psychedelic mentality of the music and appear entranced within their zones when playing onstage.

They do break the silence to thank the audience from time to time but for the majority it feels as though they do not want to disrupt the musical bubble. The audience therefore watches on in slight confusion and slight amazement as the lights, instruments and musicians all intertwine onstage and the sounds achieved are both weird and wonderful. The new album 'Hot Dreams' charted well so a lot of the tracks make it onto the setlist tonight yet it is the opener 'Beat The Drum Slowly' that remains the high point of the entire performance with simmering, atmospheric percussion and an ingenious altering of lush strings.

  • While I really enjoy the studio albums this group has produced, the stage presence by lead Taylor Kirk left a lot to be desired. I couldn't hear his singing very well. I couldn't see his face—very disappointing that no theatre spotlights were trained on the group! Often, he played having his back to the audience. To me he looked more goofy than actually a performer. Arrogant when he spoke. There was no interaction between the band members on the stage.

  • Timber Timbre was amazing despite the audience being kinda terrible--lots of chatty folks and drunk callouts/requests. They took it well in stride & played a great show nonetheless. Rocked much harder than the album version of the tracks, which maybe was by necessity to drown out the crap crowd but also made for an exciting & heavy-hitting performance.

  • These musicians are perfectly professionals. Big masters inside the world's music and I was so happy to see them live. The echoplex is a perfect place with a system sound like few can have. The lights and the whole experience was hypnotic. I appreciate the magic moment that gave this this band that probably will be of cult over time.

  • Incredible experience. The venue was small and intimate. I was there at opening, and could stretch my arm and touch the stage. The band sounds incredible live, and they work very well together.

  • Phenomenally good, just like last time I saw them in London. One of my favourite bands to see live now and never to be missed. Support from Chris Cundy was outstanding as well.
