Biography

  • Teyana Taylor was born in Harlem, New York City, USA on the 10th of December 1990. Since 17 she has been a singer, rapper, dancer and actress at a professional level, working with Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, and Jay Z before she was twenty years old.

Of all the surreal ways that artists made their name before they were famous, Harlem’s own Teyana Taylor must have one of the weirdest. In 2007, she was featured on MTV’s parade of privilege and materialism My Super Sweet 16, a show in which young girls plan their ostentatious and ridiculously expensive sixteenth birthday parties. Now, I realize that a lot of you might make up your mind about Taylor as an artist based on that fact alone, and it’s truly understandable.

However, if you look a little closer, you’ll see there’s a lot to respect about Taylor.

Despite her first appearance in the spotlight, she’s absolutely the real deal. Before the episode had even aired she’d signed to Pharrell Williams’ Star Trak Entertainment, making her Snoop Dogg’s label mate. But the year 2007 was out, she was a featured dancer in the video for Jay Z’s single “Blue Magic”, and she had her first solo single, “Google Me”, out by February 2008. With such a strong start it’s strange to think that the single tanked as hard as it did. However Taylor, even at 17 years old, was not an artist to let things get in her way.

The album that “Google Me” was trailing, “From A Planet Called Harlem” was released for free the following year as a mixtape and Taylor tried her hand at acting, with more success. In 2010, however, Kanye West called Taylor into his studio, hours before his record “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” was due, ostensibly to look at some fashion pieces Kanye had in mind for the album’s promotion. However, through sheer force of personality and persuasion, Taylor ended up writing and recording the intro and chorus for the song “Dark Fantasy”.

Her career immediately blossomed after that, and two years later when Taylor was having problems with Star Trak, West was so impressed that he signed her to his label GOOD Music after hearing her independently released mixtape “The Misunderstanding Of Teyana Taylor”. She popped up all over GOOD Music’s debut compilation album “Cruel Summer” and in 2014, her debut studio album proper was released. The album was a critical success and a fantastic starting point for an artist with the world at her feet, where she goes next is a truly exciting prospect, and we should all tag along for the ride.

Live reviews

  • Teyana Taylor

Her stage presence has sparked comparisons to Rihanna but seeing Teyana Taylor live has certainly proved to me that she is a star in her own right. Staying true to her hip-hop roots and not going down the more commercial route that some of her predecessors have taken, a Teyana Taylor gig is definitely not to be missed.

A triple threat, singer, dancer and actress, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw her as the support act for Game at The Forum back in 2011. Taylor commanded the stage with a confidence much older than her 21 years and experience and remained surprisingly strong vocally despite her dancing her way around the stage.

The set was versatile including covers of Beyonce’s ‘Run The World’ and ‘End of Time’ and ‘Rock with You’ by Michael Jackson as well as a version of ‘Dark Fantasy’ by Kanye West on which she features.

The music industry and record labels often have a habit of churning out young pop stars, hoping to discover the next Rihanna or Beyonce. What was refreshing about seeing Teyana Taylor live was that she seems to have not bowed down to conform to these ideals but remains true to the true urban foundations of hip-hop. I’m certain that there will be many opportunities to see her live very soon and I for one will definitely buy a ticket.

  • There is a reason that Harlem singer/songwriter Teyana Taylor was already receiving global attention before the release of her debut album. After appearing on a number of US reality television programmes, many noticed her star quality and it was not long before she signed with the likes of Pharrell Williams before moving on to Kanye West.

There is a clear amount of expectation placed upon the young performer yet she handles this with a cool demeanour and stage persona. She struts out onto stage leading on an entourage of musicians and demands the adoring cheers of her audience. The bratty confidence works in her favour as she sashays from side to side in order to make sure the whole audience is involved and engaged. She definitely is under the impression she is a far bigger deal than she actually is with bold song titles such as 'Google Me' which ironically anybody outside of New York is likely to be doing. If you can find any space within the venue between Teyana and her ego, then get yourself a ticket.

  • First time coming here but I've heard stories about this place growing up in NYC. The infamy of the club is right up there with the Tunnel, Shadow, Limelight, and many of the big name nightclubs of a long forgotten time in New York City. So yeah on to the meat of the review, I went here to see Teyana Taylor and her Unplugged event and being she is the First Lady of GOOD Music and I'm a member of the cult of Yeezus I had to show my support or else feel Kanye's wrath lol.

Me and a friend went to experience the powerhouse that is Teyana this past Thursday and let me tell you she did not disappoint. She put on a dope performance, the crowd was eating it up, not to mention special guests were in the building as well, Pusha T and Monica. Couldn't get pictures of them as the crowd was just way too large. The sound system was thumping hard as ever as she sang cuts off her previous album.

  • She was AMAZING. She put on a show like it was a sellout arena tour. The costumes, dancers, song selection and set design showed how much thought and effort went into the show. She didn’t just sing, she PERFORMED. I can’t believe tickets were this cheap and it goes to show we got a insane steal. Great show and the venue was cool too! Would love to see her again
