Biography

  • Casper (born September 25, 1982) is the stage name of German-born self-proclaimed “emo-rapper” Benjamin Griffey who rose to the German mainstream with his sophomore album “XOXO”, hailing from Bösingfeld, Germany.

Born in the German village of Bösingfeld to a German mother and American father, Griffey moved to Augusta, Georgia, U.S. after two weeks of life. Living in a trailer park until the age of 11, it was then the future rapper returned to Germany with his mother and younger sister. Having immersed himself in the hard rock and hip-hop scene in the States, Griffey began developing his rhyming talents and formed the metalcore band, a Fear Called Treason.

After parting way with the band, the rapper released his debut mixtape “Die Welt Hört Mich” in 2006 on the 667 label. The record was supported by two years of constant touring throughout Germany, following which Casper issued his debut studio album “Hin Zur Sonne” once again on 667 Records. Despite not propelling the musician to the German mainstream, the record proved popular in underground circles and led to Casper signing with Selfmade Records. In 2009, Griffey, alongside fellow rappers and label mates Kollegah, Favorite, and Shiml, released the album “Chronik 2”.

By October 2010 the rapper had departed Selfmade Records and signed with German label Four Music. Casper’s debut release on the label was the 2011 album “XOXO”, which earning Gold certification in Germany, propelled the rapper to German rap consciousness. The record subsequently won the 2012 ECHO award for Best Hip-Hop/Urban album, and was followed by his third full-length “Hinterland” in 2013.

Live reviews

  • Benjamin Griffey, also known as Casper, has engineered a strong following in the German Rap scene, due to his unique lyrical content and guitar based instrumentals. The self proclaimed “emo rapper” initially divided many rap fans with his Eminem-esque persona, but he quickly won over the masses in Germany with his album “XOXO” going straight to number one in the charts in 2011.

Casper is so endearing to fans due to the autobiographical nature of his music, instead of spitting rhymes about shooting gangsters and buying rims, Griffey has alternatively chosen to tell his own story, about being a small-town German kid growing up in a trailer park in Georgia, USA, before moving back to Germany without knowing the language.

In addition to his distinctive inward expression, Casper differentiates himself from other rappers with his live performances. There are no gold chains or DJ’s to be seen at one of his concerts. Instead Griffey enters the stage wearing a simple T-shirt and jeans, and is backed by a full live band, which bring his riff heavy tunes to life with aplomb. Tracks like "Auf und davon" and "Halbe Mille" get the crowd bouncing, with hands raised and heads bobbing.

There is no denying that watching Casper is like witnessing hip hop in it’s truest form, an MC delivering his message to the masses, even if it’s not a traditional rap concert.

  • Going to see Casper in Germany in March back a few months ago, I literally had no idea what was in store for me. I am a big fan of hip hop and some rap and I have always enjoyed Casper. I was super excited to see him at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, the venue is just insanely huge. (I think it is used as a hockey rink when not as an entertainment venue). The set started out pitch black and some dim blue lights came on, lighting up the stage a bit. Then the band starts playing and soon the lights are on and there appears a huge 10 piece band with Casper himself bouncing around the middle of the stage and getting the whole crowd pumped up before he begins his verse. He looks very cool in his urban style clothes and a gold chain with a baseball cap. His energy is fantastic as he jumps around like a madman, rallying the audience like and army ready to attack, or in this case dance and scream for joy. By a few songs into the set, the lights start getting very complex and interesting. By the end of the show, there are several lights spinning in circles that resemble sun rays shining through the venue as Casper performs his greatest songs and the crowd has the best time of their life.

  • Benjamin Griffey better known by his stage name Casper originally struggled with language at a young age as his family moved between his homeland of Germany and the United States without being raised bilingually. It would seem ironic that he is now considered a master of language as a rapper and has won critical praise from across the globe. Performing relentlessly on the underground scene around his home city, it took him a number of years, collaborations and recordings before he gained the attention of his record label Four Music.

Now he commands a loyal following across Europe and continues to adapt and develop his live show. With three albums in his fast expanding discography and countless mix-tapes Griffey has no issues in crafting a setlist that caters for all of the fans present tonight regardless of when or how they discovered Casper's music. The devotees make themselves known for the older material as the lights fade onto the stage and you can still hear their voices rapping along. Benjamin raises his arms in silent salute and gratitude at the finale of the show and the crowd erupt in cheers and applause for this talented artist.

  • Awesome show!! Great performance as always :-) used to be a smaller audience which made it more intimate but that didn’t affect his performance whatsoever. He suddenly appeared on a small stage in the middle of the crowd and did a couple track which totally rocked!!
