Biography

  • Ducktails are a band based in New Jersey, United States who formed in 2006. Beginning as the solo project of future Real Estate guitarist Matt Mondanile, the band have released five studio albums since their debut effort in 2009.

Matt Mondanile started Ducktails in a Massachusetts tool-shed the summer before starting his last semester Hampshire College. In that tool-shed he crafted what would later become his first demo tape “1992 Demo” with nothing more than an electric guitar, a set of multi-effects pedals and a four track recorder. It was finished by the time he finished college in 2007, and when he moved back to his parents house in New Jersey, he decided to focus on Ducktails full time, releasing several more demos, singles and EP's before signing to Not Not Fun Records in 2009. The project's self-titled debut album came out the same year, and Mondanile was on such a creative roll that he put together a second Ducktails album, entitled “Landscapes”, and released it before the end of the same year.

By this time, Mondanile was already playing in the indie rock band Real Estate, but his work in Ducktails was still hugely acclaimed. A year after Real Estate signed to Domino Records, Mondanile's work with Ducktails impressed the company so much that they signed his project to the label as well. Ever since then, the band have continued to release hugely acclaimed albums, and perform unmissable live shows to boot. Mondanile has proved himself to be something of an indie rock renaissance man, running his own record label New Images, playing in one of the hottest indie rock bands around and fronting one of the most acclaimed side projects of its time to boot. For all that, Ducktails come highly recommended.

Live reviews

  • Ducktails

The surreal, glazed over sound that Ducktails so masterfully produces is sure to put their audience in a complete state of satisfaction. Although Ducktails are serious about the music they produce, they also have a lighthearted approach to their music and have a fascination with vintage sounds, as would be expected from a band that names themselves after the popular 1980’s cartoon, DuckTales. The band is able to create a very rich and hazy sound with all the effects they run through their instruments. They heavily use reverb and chorus on the guitars to get a really ethereal, shimmering sound when playing their guitars in a quick, jangly way. They also play the Fender Rhodes electronic piano and run it through a chorus pedal to get a 70’s sounding vibe that might be expected from a 10cc song. Ducktails also stays true to their vintage vibe they are trying to create by having a saxophonist in their band belt out some mellow solos in a Steely Dan like fashion.

Although the band has a very tight sound when they play live, they also break out in free form jams allowing themselves to experiment with unique sounds. Their music often can jump into full fledge droning, psychedelic jams that really pumps up the audience. Matt Mondanile, also a main songwriter in the band Real Estate, sings in a very subdued manner and creates chill vibes by running his voice through reverb. During their performance Ducktails will usually go through a wide variety of songs from their albums and will even sometimes throw in some obscure cover songs such as Peter Gutteridge’s “Planet Phrom”. Ducktails’ performances seem to perfectly encapsulate that jazz rock style of the 70’s and 80’s as well as incorporates their own unique sound of lo-fi, chillwave music. When seeing them live they will be sure to put you in a hazy trance and keep your feet tapping on the dance floor.

  • Psychedelic pop band Ducktails seem to believe you can find a balance between quality and quantity as since their debut eponymous album in 2009 they have followed it up with four more LPs. Although this band formed as a side project of Real Estate's Matt Mondanile it has proven to have real longevity and an appeal all of its own. It seems to be the combination of high quality musicianship with a characteristic production gloss that is able to hypnotise and engage the crowds all at once.

A big hit with British institutions including BBC6 Music, Ducktails are always well received when they visit our little Isle and fans snap tickets up fast. The atmosphere is subdued stepping into the venue as the screen flutters with visuals and smoke filters around the carefully laid instruments. The quartet appears and instantly begin to craft their music, for the first three tracks hardly acknowledging the crowds at all as bars weave into one and other. This continues through the set as celestial riffs and wonderful bass lines interweave with the vocals to offer a dream like and surreal sound. It crescendos in an intense version of 'Letter of Intent' which receives huge applause.

  • The Ducktails concert at Bowery Ballroom was AMAZING! I love the new album, it's Matt's best so far. The band was GREAT! To hear the music live just made me appreciate the album more. When, they performed "Heaven's Room" I was truly moved. I look forward to the next album and another Ducktails concert.

  • Not a bad show, however the lack of a live band partially took away from the experience and he didn't play Killin The Vibe, which was a shame. 7/10 overall
