Biography

  • Dilated Peoples are an American hip hop trio from Los Angeles, California consisting of Evidence, DJ Babu, and Raka Iriscience.

Teaming together in 1992, DJ Babu (born Melvin Babu), Evidence (born Michael David Perretta), and Rakaa (born Rakaa Taylor), the trio recorded an album entitled “Imagery, Battle Hymns & Political Poetry” although it was never released, although some of their fans were still able to find a copy. They then did release “Third Degree,” and “Work The Angles” on ABB Records in 1997 and 1998. Dilated Peoples gained a strong underground following and eventually signed with Capitol Records and released “The Platform” in 2000.

The trio released their sophomore album entitled “Expansion Team” which was released in 2001. The album debuted at number eight on the Billboard R&B Albums Chart as well as number thirty-six on the Billboard 200. They followed up with “Neighbourhood Watch” in 2004, which sold over 100,000 copies in the United States and debuting at number fifty-five on the Billboard 200. Dilated Peoples’ fourth studio album, “20/20” was released in 2006 led off by the single “Back Again.” The song was featured on the video game Fight Night Round 3 soundtrack and in 2012 they collaborated with Platinum Games. After fulfilling their four-album contract with Capitol Records, they started to work with the underground hip-hop group, Global Warning.

Live reviews

  • Dilated Peoples

Suggestions that hip hop peaked in the nineties and entered into something of a slump in the noughties are only true if we’re talking specifically about the mainstream; sure, when the likes of Tupac, Biggie, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg were front and centre, it seemed like something of a golden age for hip hop, but just because things took an unpleasant turn at the start of the new century, with Eminem’s appetite for misogyny and 50 Cent’s nauseating materialism suddenly so prominent, it doesn’t mean that the underground didn’t remain packed with talent - Dilated Peoples are a fine example of that. The L.A. trio have been dropping superb records ever since their 2000 debut proper, The Platform, and excitingly, they’re set to release their first effort in eight years later this month, Directors of Photography. Hopefully, they’ll have lost none of the genuine spark and crackle that made their sound so unusually exciting, or their live shows such a draw, for that matter; their slow, deliberate style translates perfectly to the stage, where DJ Babu’s frantic turntabling is offset by the laid-back back-and-forth between Evidence and Rakaa Iriscience. With the album so close, a slew of shows on the mainland are already in the diary for late August, but there’s been no news yet on a new date for their postponed show at London’s Scala from back in June; hopefully, they’ll accompany the rescheduled concert with a few more in the UK.

  • This Californian trio, consisting of Evidence, DJ Babu, and Raka Iriscience, make up the American hip hop act Dilated Peoples. The band formed during the peak of hip hop music, as the genre was in its prime, in 1992. Dilated Peoples certainly has an air of nostalgia about them, a certain noughties flair that may or may not resonate via their wardrobe choices, they are also still incredibly contemporary and have only increased their fan base over the many years that they have been performing. This was all too evident by the number of fans that came to view the trio, fans whose ages ranged from the very young to the middle aged. The one thing that united them, however, was a good taste in hip hop music and a love of old school beats. Dilated Peoples are full of energy, are an incredibly vibrant trio and aim to please the crowd as only they know how. From brilliant turn table skills to fats paced rhythms and catchy lyrics, these guys have it all.
