Live reviews

  • Matt Corby

Unlike many pop idol products, Matt Corby’s attempts to break out of his Australian Idol mould have proven relatively successively. Just one month after coming across Corby’s single Brother, I had the chance to see him live at London’s Hackney Chapel, an intimate venue where he could demonstrate his vocal prowess, corrupting even the holiest of saints.

He’s just as comfortable stripped down with a guitar or piano, as he is belting out hits like Brother and Resolution, highlighting his unique vocal range and power behind his performances. His small collection of EPs prove enough for an engaging set that’s as passionately sung as it is personally relevant to songwriter Corby. He changes up the vocalization when singing live, but his throaty choruses and high octaves undeniably keep to Corby’s style.

One thing he hasn’t left behind from his reality show days are a legion of devoted female fans infiltrating virtually every show, especially eager in his native Australia, undoubtedly a consequence of his broody persona and charming good looks.

Luckily, his devotion to his music and his passionate commitment to his performances are enough for me to forgive his Australian Idol roots. His last tour was the Resolution Tour late 2013, and he’s got nothing currently planned, but you can bet he’ll pack up the tour bus and hit the road once he’s finished working on his new album in his native Australia.

  • First off, I would like to say congratulations to the Overcoats for a magnificent open! They were so precious and had so much fun on stage. The cute little dances, beats, and just how well their voices blended together we're all fantastic. And then the precious angel that Matt Corby is came on stage and killed the show. His range and musical talents are so incredibly vast. I've never seen someone stand 6 feet behind their mic and belt out perfect notes. I honestly fell in love with Bree Tranter who plays keys and other auxiliary percussion in the tour. she also has her own album out and you should check her out❤️. But then after the show, we caught the whole band in the alley and they were so cool and just interested in their fans and truly cared about what we had to say to them and were really engaged in conversations. Possibly the best concert I've been to.

  • As someone who has seen Matt live before, I can confirm that there is nothing else in the world like this experience. His voice is the literal definition of goose bumps and no video nor audio recording can do justice as to what his magical voice is like in person. The ability at his concerts to close your eyes and be transported just by the sound and atmosphere is everything. Also I've been a massive fan for years now, and to see him blow up like he has to performing to massive crowds like this is wonderful, and what he deserves. I believe everyone in the world should get the chance to experience the gift in which is Matt's voice and stage presence. Overall, musically the man is fantastic but as a person Matt gives the best vibes and is just so charismatic! Fabulous concert, can't wait to see you again on your next tour Matt! Love you to bits!

  • I don't usually watch the videos I take at concerts, but I've watched these ones a lot. By far, THE best gig I've been to in my life. The venue was amazing, very small and up close to everything, it all felt very real. As for the music... damn, that guy can sing. I still have goosebumps, and there were other grown men in tears. I've never seen anyone sing with so much passion (I know that sounds cheesy) but Matt just really got into it. At the end, for a few seconds, no one cheered, we just all stood there in awe. Absolutely incredible. I almost hope that Matt Corby doesn't get too well know! Smaller venues make for a mic more memorable evening, especially when you're right at the front.

  • I went to this gig on the strength of having one EP. I therefore knew he had a very good voice but hearing him live was very very good - effortless and amazing voice.

Would recommend going to see him very very good.

Only down point was some idiots stood behind us who where talking constantly - you don;t expect a library but these idiots took the biscuit!!! I'm only putting this as a remote hope they read this!!!!

  • Matt Corby really impressed me. His songs are written so cleverley. I’d even say he comes across as a music genius. The sounds on stage were amazing, played & sung so so beautifully. He had a audience that were so into him that they sat still to absorb the beautiful singing & the musicians were just perfect. Yay 3 pianos. Can you get a fourth do ai can play with you too!

  • Hearing Matt Corby is always a blessing and I am definitely thankful for having been there.

I although believe the concert was too short. 1 hour and 15 min didn't meet my expectations, especially having travelled from so far to be able to be in this concert.

The venue was however a good place for this concert, sound was perfect and all the ambience also.

  • It was my first time seeing Matt Corby and it was absolutely amazing. One thing you should know: He sounds 785876 times better life than on YouTube (and I know how good he sounds on YouTube, don't worry).

The atmosphere was amazing, nobody tried to jump the queue, nobody was drunk like an idiot, it was pretty chilled.

    I'm really glad I went.

  • I wish I could have seen Matt’s concert two nights in a row. I was so relaxed throughout the show with his beautiful music. An incredible talent and generous performer. My last concert was Florence & the Machine which can’t even compare to Matt Corby (don’t even get me started).

  • Matt never disappoints. 3rd time I've seen him. His vocals are stunning and what a great venue manchester cathedral is. A brilliant night. Played alot from new album 'rainbow Valley' and a few old ones. The band sounded great and the support 'jones' was great aswell.
