Biography

  • Cœur de pirate (Pirate Heart) is the stage name of Canadian musician, Béatrice Martin. The majority of her songs are in the French language and she has often been credited for reviving and introducing a whole new generation to chanson music.

Martin was born on 22 September 1989 in Outremont, Quebec, Canada. By age three she had undertaken piano performance, which in large part was stimulated by her mother, who was a professional pianist. When she was nine years old she attended the Conservatorie de musique du Quebec a Montreal, remaining there for five years. Almost directly after her departure from the school she joined the post-hardcore group December Strikes First, assuming the role of keyboardist. After the groups break up she joined the indie pop band Bonjour Brumaire in 2007, but stayed with them only until April 2008.

Just a little over a year later Martin released her self-titled studio debut. The album was released through the label Grosse Boite and charted in Canada, France, Switzerland, and Belgium. Two versions of this album were released. The Canadian version contained the song “Pour un infidele”, featuring a duet with Quebec pop artist Jimmy Hunt and the French release included a version of that track featuring the French folk-rock singer/songwriter Julien Dore. This album was nominated for both the Francophone Album of the Year and the 2009 Polaris Music Prize. It was also a success in the States garnering praise from Paris Hilton and receiving coverage on the popular TV show “Good Morning America”.

Martin followed her debut album with several singles such as “One for Me” (one of her 1st singles in English) and “Place de la republique”. In 2009 and 2010 she made an appearance on the CBC Radio Show, Q. On her 2010 appearance she was accompanied by Jay Malinowski (frontman of indie reggae group Bedouin Soundclash). Martin continued her collaborations with Malinowski appearing on the Bedouin Soundclash song “Brutal Hearts” as well as forming a side project with him called Armistice. This group also featured members of the punk rock outfit the Bronx and their 5 track EP rose to No.11 on the Canadian Album Charts.

On 7 november 2011 Martin released her 2nd studio album “Blonde” to widespread acclaim. This release is heavily indebted to retro pop and channelled influences ranging from styles such as surf rock and ye-ye and artists like Serge Gainsbourg, Nancy Sinatra and the Zombies . The album proved to be both a critical and commercial success topping the charts in Quebec, entering at No. 5 in France and No. 2 in the French section of Belgium and was nominated for the Juno and Polaris Awards.

Martin took a hiatus from her career for the greater part of 2012 in order to prepare for the birth of her daughter, Romy. By early 2013 she composed the music for the TV series “Trauma”, which saw release in 2014 as was the Ubisoft video game soundtrack “Child of Light” to which she also contributed.

  • Cœur de pirate

Coeur De Pirate is one of very few foreign language speakers to manage to make waves amongst English speaking audiences. Although she didn’t enjoy massive mainstream commercial success with her debut self titled album in 2008, amongst independent music fans her minimalist, sweetly piano-accompanied ballads were widely appreciated and adored by many.

Melancholy sounding tracks such as “Fondu au Noir” and “Francis” wouldn’t be out of place on something like Yann Teirsen’s soundtrack to the French cult film, ‘Amélie.’ Having said this, Coeur De Pirate, whose real name is Béatrice Martin, comes from Montreal and so this French-Canadian singer and songwriter has much less of a heavily accordion-influenced sound than Tiersen! The peak of her widespread recognition came in the form of her song, “Ensemble” being used as the soundtrack for photographer Francis Vachon’s viral video, "Time lapse of a baby playing with his toys:" which should tell you a little something about the naïve and innocent tone of her tracks. This simple and wide-eyed element is not lost on Coeur De Pirate’s live performances. Always interacting well with her audiences, both in French and English, and smiling shyly along the way, Coeur De Pirate reflects the innocent nature of her songs in her modest but effortlessly precise renditions of her recorded tracks. Add into the mix a few covers such as Ben E. Strong’s “Stand By Me” and The Weeknd’s “Wicked Games” and you’ve got a sweetly satisfying and varied live show!

  • Bringing French chanson music to a whole new generation of people who would have been otherwise oblivious to its existence, Béatrice Martin better known by her stage name Cœur de pirate may be young yet she is determined. Performing the majority of her tracks in French, she has achieved universal appeal thanks to the bewitching quality of her indie pop.

A vocal of immeasurable sweetness yet with true depth and rhythm, as Martin sits behind a keyboard and spins a fable within a three minute structure she has the whole room enchanted. Joined by three other musicians, they help hold together the musical skeleton of her discography whilst Beatrice breaths a life into it. The Montreal native has travelled globally and seems ecstatic to have been given this opportunity so her gratitude shines through during the performance and she is constantly thanking the crowds for coming out to see her tonight which of course receives huge rounds of applause. She finishes on a captivating rendition of 'Oublie-Moi' or 'Forget Me' which has the whole venue cheering in joyous approval at its finale.

  • We saw Coeur de Pirate at Scala London when our flights to the Paris show were cancelled because of the air traffic control strike.

A small venue, about 1100 all standing, this must have been sold out or close .

Couer de Pirate played a blinding set, most tracks from the brilliantly produced new album Roses were played . This pushes a more developed chanson firmly into the alternative pop genre. Seemingly effortless vocals combine with a fuller instrumental style and some deep lyrics in both French and English .

In the middle of the set the supporting band left the stage leaving just Coeur de Pirate in a pool of light with her piano . A slight change in mood as the utterly charming Beatrice draws you in, talks to the crowd and makes you feel like there are half a dozen of you in a bar round the piano.

The band return to the stage and the tempo builds again playing some favourites ,old and new, the crowd now singing along . A double encour is unavoidable and the thunderous applause is well deserved.

  • If you're reading this, I'm assuming you already like Coeur de Pirate. Her music is brilliant and beautiful. But how is her show? She did a great job of bringing her songs to life, but I could tell she felt nervous. She kept apologizing for her voice and drinking a lot of water, even though she sounded great. And she hesitated to make eye contact with anyone in the audience. She said it was one of the biggest shows she's ever played and I think she was feeling that. With that said, I would absolutely go again. To see her in person singing and playing and chatting with the audience was really magical. Vraiment magnifique ! Merci beaucoup !

  • Was looking forward to this concert and had mix feelings at the end. The best part of the show was clearly when Beatrice was solo at her piano. It is then that she is able to fully showcase her amazing talent. When the band was there unfortunately percussions were way too loud loosing her , c’est vraiment dommage j’ aurai aimé un concert plus intime plus acoustique. Un acoustic avec un violon ou même un cello aurait été fantastique

Donc bon concert mais tellement de talent pour faire tellement mieux

    Merci pour cette soirée

  • Cœur de pirate is an amazing artist, to make that clear from the start.

Her concert in London was therefore bound to be special and reached all expectations and beyond. The size of The Garage made this concert more intimist, only 700 fans and Beatrice.

Her songs are so beautiful, and taking the time to introduce some of them through funny stories made them even better. Cœur de pirate loves her audience and her audience was conquered from the first notes.

I absolutely loved every seconds of it and can't wait to see her again!

  • Coeur de Pirate was amazing - very alive and great feeling to her music. The venue however - Bronson Centre - was not good. The acoustics are not good and there a fire alarm went off during the show; it seems someone went through a door the tripped the alarm but the venue had no way over turning the alarm off - it was quite unbelievable and seems to reflect bad management or planning, or similar. Beatrice sang through it and charmed us all with her attitude to this strange thing that was happening.

  • Great performance! New and old songs sung with heart and style. The group sounds cohesive and their arrangements all have a nice twist to them, giving each song a je ne sais quoi. Nice balance of French and English songs.

Beatrice is engaging and displays lots of charm on stage. A must!

  • Her new Indie flavor made this experience wonderful and different from her old works. While I still love her old songs, I really adore her courage to experience new styles. Next time maybe she should try Jazz for her new album.
