Hailing from Czech Republic, Markéta Irglová born February 28th 1988 is a singer-songwriter, musician and actress with an Academy Award to he name for Best Original Song for “Falling Slowly” at the 80th ceremony, which she co-wrote with Glen Hansard.
Irglová grew up surrounded by music. As a seasoned instrumentalist, she began playing the piano aged 8 and guitar aged 9. She was just thirteen years old when her parents met Glen Hansard, who was best known at the time for fronting the Irish rock band, The Frames. Hansard heard Irglová sing his song “Star Star” and the next day, Irglová was invited to perform with the band on-stage. She was involved in the recording of a track that would make the cut of The Frames’ live album. Irglová started to hone her talent playing her own compositions around the Czech Republic, the United States and Ireland. Together, the duo recorded an album called “The Swell Season” which became an eponymous album released on April 21st 2006. The album featured the song “Falling Slowly”, which would go on to be nominated for a Grammy and win and Academy Award.
She was also cast opposite Hansard in the Irish musical film Once for which she, along Hansard, composed all of the music for. The film gained a lot of critical acclaim for how naturalistic it was on the most part, with some reviews saying, “It may well be the best music film of our generation”. The album that coincided with the release of the film reached 15 on the Irish Albums Chart in its first week, whilst “Falling Slowly reached number 2. The soundtrack has also reached #27 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Following her success with Once, she embarked on a solo career and released the album “Anar” on October 11th 2011. She also released an album entitled “Muna” on September 23rd 2014.

The film portrays Marketa as a beautiful artist that effortlessly writes, composes, and performs her music. I had to find out if she would come off the same way in person or if it was all just acting. Luckily, when she played a small hall in my town I was able to get a ticket to see her.
The venue was on the smaller side, so the setting felt very intimate and conducive to her style of music. All of her fans were on the younger side, I would say under thirty, and seemed excited to be seeing her, most for the first time. She took the stage, seating herself behind a beautiful piano and began to play “Let Me Fall In Love”. The audience was receptive sitting in their seats and swaying with the music.
The show went on like that, her playing beautifully, and us in the audience being lulled into a trance of bliss. As she wound up the night she played her most famous song, “Falling Slowly”. This song was made famous in the film once. It was the perfect way to end the night and a perfect concert. Her voice was every bit as beautiful in concert as it was in the film.
