You need to see your new favourite band the Wave Pictures. Although they’re British, you’ll hear a cross between US artists Jonathan Richman, Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt, with a little British indie thrown in too (think Suede and The Smiths), and some afrobeat guitars.
They live for playing live. For over 10 years they’ve spent most of their time on the road. It’s where they write their songs, and perfect their live show. No two Wave Pictures gigs are the same. They don’t tour the same old setlist to promote new “product”. The setlist changes every night, chosen on the night by the band. Even if they have new music out, they’re likely to play some newer unreleased material, plus plenty of old crowd favourites.
They’re expert musicians, particularly guitarist/singer David Tattersall. Expect fun solos from all three in the band. But don’t think David will do as others do and change guitars and strings during the night, or use guitar pedals. He’ll play his one guitar, as is, all night, no frills. Even a lack of microphones doesn’t stop them - in fact some songs they’ll play deliberately without mikes, making for unique intimate moments.
Apart from the sensational artistry of these three (plus guest percussionist) musicians, and their witty lyrics, there was one thing I was not prepared for at the gig at Start The Bus in Bristol last night (29th Feb 2016): just how much fun they have and spread among the large crowd. David Tattersall is a sensational guitarist - no need for messing around with ranks for pedals - just brilliant playing, but he is also very funny, taking the rise out of Fran (his supremely talented bass player, bloody good on the Frandolin too) and Johnny Huddersfield Helm (the drummer and intermittent singer) as well as the crowd itself.
I had the feeling that this lot could well be playing much bigger venues but that intimacy would be lost and maybe they just don't want to.
Don't be fooled by an eight quid entry. This lot are so good that it is a crime to miss out.
The Wave Pictures are my new obsession make them yours!
I heard about The Wave Pictures for the very first time in Nov. 2016. And I saw them some weeks later on stage. This converted my view on music. Since then I can´t image how I managed to live without.
Three excellent musicians and their instruments. No frills. Bringing together a broad range of different music styles and reducing this to the core. Inspiring. Ingenious lyrics.
Every concert is different, every concert is a revelation.
The Waves rocked the Boat tonight. A crowd pleaser from The Wave Pictures at their home-town gig at the legendary Notts Boat Club with Jonny ‘Huddersfield’ Helm the singing drummer stealing the show.
If you are looking for a lively, joyful night of blues guitars, thumping bass and extravagant drumming thoughtful/amusing songs, a night with David Tattersall’s band is the place for you.
Saw The Wave Pictures at the Green Door Store in Brighton (again). I could watch and listen to this band every night without getting bored. They are simply one of the best live bands for small intimate venues like GDS. Their quirky lyrics and amazing musicianship make every gig a night to remember.
Vibes for your soul- absolutely amazing those boys from london.... second time in paris for me- and i would go another 98 times. Poetic story telling with guitar riffs to float away with- supersonic club also very nice, small and great athmosphere. A wonderful experience!!!
