Biography

  • Kalimba (born July 26, 1982) is the stage name of Kalimba Marichal Ibar, a popular Mexican Latin pop and R&B singer who is also known for his voice acting in the films “The Lion King” and “James and the Giant Peach”, hailing from Mexico City, Mexico.

From an early age, strongly influenced by his parents’ interest in music and theatre, Kalimba began his career in the entertainment business. By the age of three, the talented singer and actor had begun appearing in theatre and television productions including “Chiquilladas”, “Chocolate Chip”, and “Carrusel Americas Biography”. At the age of 11, Kalimba joined the Mexican pop group La Onda Vaselina, significantly raising his profile to that of youth pop star, which he would subsequently maintain with the groups La Onda and OV7. After contributing to OV7’s 1993 album, “La Banda Rock”, which sold over 350,000 copies, Kalimba turned his attention to voice acting later recording the dubs to the “The Lion King's” “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and the Spanish dub of “Hey Arnold!”.

By 2004 Kalimba had endeared himself to the hearts of adolescents and adults alike, which led to the release of his critically-acclaimed debut solo album “Aerosoul” the same year. The record was led by the single “Tocando Fondo”, marking his debut on the Billboard Latin Charts and paved the way for his sophomore album “NegroKlaro”. Released in 2007, the record earned similarly popular reviews, aided by the singles “Solo dejate amar”, “Duele”, and “No Puedo dejarte de amar”. A year later the full-length “Mi otro Yo” appeared led by the single “Se te olvido”, followed by the tribute album “Amar Y Querer: Homenaje A Las Grandes Canciones” in 2009.

Live reviews

  • Kalimba

Mexico’s Kalimba has been a performer since he was 3 and appearing at theatres and on television from that early age has clearly helped to shape his live show into the polished spectacle it is today.

One thing he probably didn’t have going for him when he was 3 though was his way with the ladies. From the second Kalimba hits his opening notes the predominantly female crowd are already going wild. Kalimba gives them everything they are hoping for - lingering looks during slow-dance ballads and ferocious emotion as he kicks off for some vocal acrobatics.

It can be hard for an artist who sings and doesn’t play an instrument to really put on a confident performance. With nothing in between you and your crowd, the singer has nowhere to hide but this is where Kalimba absolutely flourishes. The crowd really gets a feel for Kalimba’s emotions as he relishes the opportunity to make a real connection with his fans. Kalimba’s shows are a breath taking experience, especially if you are a lady it seems
