Live reviews

  • Dreadzone

Self-proclaimed 'pioneers of UK bass culture', Dreadzone have been delivering a uniquely uplifting blend of reggae, beat-pulsing dub, techno and folk music for the past 20 or so years. Back in 1993 while outdoor raves were still legal, the band formed and began blowing up the dance and techno scene, opening the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury following the release of their debut album, '360°'.

They still continue to bring the party wherever they and are festival favourites- I caught them playing Glastonbury again a few years back and, despite frontman MC Spee now performing seated due to a knee injury, Dreadzone definitely haven't lost any of their energy and zeal onstage. It's clear that playing live is what this band love to do, feeding off the crowd and skanking away onstage throughout. It was impossible NOT to dance to their infectiously driving basslines, tantalising reggae hooks and banging techno beats, and the festival audience, old and young, gave them a lot of love.

Their uplifting lyrics, unusual samples and dirty dance beats came packaged in party belters like 'Tomorrow Never Comes', and 'I know!', and one highlight was when they played an awesome cover of reggae classic 'Iron Shirt'- everyone in the audience was singing the words.

  • Saw Dreadzone in Preston on Friday when they appeared without their front man, Mr Spee, who was apparently unwell.

I've been a fan since '95, seen them live many times before and imho they really should've cancelled this show and refunded our money as they were nowhere near as good without Spee. They tried to sustain it but it was like listening to the rhythm section all night, particularly since the guitarist had already left the band before this tour. I think this was reflected in the audience's reaction as the band just didn't manage to set the room on fire as I seen them do on numerous occasions in the past.

Please, Dreadzone, don't do any more gigs without Mr Spee.

  • I've seen Dreadzone plenty of times over the past 25 years or so, first time was when they opened Glastonbury in 95 where they tore the festival a new one. Whether it's a huge festie stage or an intimate gig to a couple of hundred Dread faithful, they really know how to raise the vibration and get everyone moving, playing dancehallesque classics alongside rabble rousing anthems... genuinely lovely people too, always ready to have a chat and a laugh with the crowd. Love 'em!

  • Dreadzone are one of the most entertaining bands I have ever seen and I have seen a lot!

They are so friendly humble and human.

With samples from films along with the mix of several types of genre Dreadzone have such imagination. Drum and base, folk,African beats, electronica and more.

So many gigs sold out.. The Dread Times tour has been a phenomenal success. Well worth going to see for an epic bounce. Once you see them you are hooked..

  • Another great show by Dreadzone, always play for the crowd and never fail to deliver. Having seen them many times over the years I'd highly recommend seeing this highly polished band if you get the chance. Seeing them in a small venue like we did is the best.
