Biography

  • Jamie T (born 8 January 1986) aka Jamie Alexander Treays is an indie-rock singer-songwriter from London, UK whose distinctive mockney vocals and catchy tunes saw his rise in popularity during the mid-2000s.

When BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe picked up his track “Salvador” in 2006 as single of the week, Jamie T went from strength to strength with his loveable charm and incredible ability to hone into his craft and produce big catchy tunes. His first official release “Sheila” released later that year would become a classic track which helped to define Jamie T’s distinctive and unique style. The video featured notable British actor Bob Hoskins lip synching the lyrics whilst walking down the River Thames, making it ever more memorable and quirky. The single reached number 15 in the UK Singles charts.

The follow up single came in the form of the anthem “If You Got The Money” which peaked at number 13, and also saw him steadily climbing up the charts with continual success as the next single “Calm Down Dearest”, released in early 2007, earned Jamie his first top ten single, scoring the number nine position in the single charts.

With a string of catchy hits at the helm, Jamie T released his debut ska-punk influenced album “Panic Prevention” on 29 January 2007 under his new label Virgin, with whom had signed a five album deal. The album title is said to be taken in reference to his own experiences of social anxiety growing up and ties in nicely with the underlying themes of modern youth culture. Scoring number four and certifying gold, the album catapulted him into the limelight as he toured relentlessly nationwide, playing massive festivals such as Benicassim, V Festival, Reading & Leeds and Radio 1’s Big Weekend. Later that year he was awarded Best Solo Artist at the 2007 Shockwave NME Awards.

In 2009 Jamie T released his critically acclaimed second album “Kings and Queens” which went straight to number two in the album charts. Having acquired a more political stance and perspective fuelled by his frustration with the music industry, it became more of a driving force for themes explored throughout the album. As well as featuring the popular track “Sticks n Stones”, the album also churned out 3 EP’s from its track listing.

Despite the success of his second album, radio silence became increasingly more apparent as Jamie T went off the radar. In 2012 the Guardian newspaper wrote a feature about a Facebook group that had emerged called “Where’s Jamie T?”. Re-appearing in 2014 with a handful of small intimate shows, Jamie released his first material in five years with the single “Don’t You Find” from the album “Carry on the Grudge” released in September 2014. With a more mature sound and refined image, Jamie T came back to reclaim his throne as he continues to exceed expectations and create quintessential anthems that will last a lifetime.

Live reviews

  • Jamie T

A lot has been made of the extended hiatus between Jamie T’s second and third albums, and, apart from the spat of intimate gigs this summer and a rare festival appearance here and there, live moments have also been confined to the memory. Until now, at least.

It’s the hottest Halloween on record, and Southampton is welcoming back its favourite bratty troubadour with an army of the undead. Mass zombie karaoke erupts as he breaks into tonights opener, Limits Lie, before the gloomy atmospherics of Don’t You Find ratchet up the anticipation of the crowd. Everyone is baying to dance, like extras from the Thriller video after ten pints.

The schizophrenic punk rock of Peter grants their wishes, with punishing guitar riffs and a pulsating rhythm enticing the eruption of the first major moshing of the evening. It would appear that punk’s not dead, then, it just emerges every now and again for a dance.

What is obvious as the evening progresses, though, is the command that Jamie has over his followers despite only stopping to say ‘thank you’ between songs. Slower moments reveal the tenderness within his craft, as the acoustic balladry of Emily’s Heart and Love Is Only A Heartbeat Away allow the crowd a chance to mop away their sweaty face-paint as they bellow his words back to him.

It was written that this would be a Halloween spectacular, though, with the encore bringing current single Zombie. Pop punk hooks abound, persuading the mass of undead monsters to pogo beneath the cold rain of airborne lager. It’s the only thing offering respite from the heat, and a nod to the hedonistic nostalgia wrought by tonight’s closing effort, Sticks N Stones. It provides a fitting final flourish by providing those infamous featherweight champions (that are cheap to get pissed) an opportunity to relive their former glories.

Leaving the sweaty faced undead in his face, momentarily encapsulated in his glorious microcosm of modern city living, he’s gone. Proving that there’s life in the little oik still, even though he’s all grown up. Well, nearly, at least.

  • Forgive me if my memory’s a little hazy here, because it’s been so long since Jamie T was actually playing live shows that precisely what he used to get up to on stage might be something that’s faded from the public consciousness, even if the man himself, and his music, don’t seem to have. In fact, now’s as good a time as any to be discussing him, what with new single ‘Don’t You Find’ having just dropped and with a handful of small club shows lined up around the UK, ostensibly to ease him back into the live scene; unveiling the new single on Radio 1, he admitted to having “kind of forgotten how to play everything”. Back when he was promoting the terrific Kings & Queens in 2009, he brought a diverse set to his audiences. Raucous singalongs? Check - ‘Sticks n’ Stones’, ‘Sheila’, ‘Salvador’. Moments of genuine emotional intimacy? He had them too; non-album track ‘St. Christopher’ was a particular highlight, in that regard. His interplay with his live band was perhaps the highlight, bringing the more instrumentally complex likes of ‘The Man’s Machine’ and ‘Chaka Demus’ to life, although he’s out with a completely different lineup this time around; with ‘Don’t You Find’ hinting at a new, darker sound, it’s going to be fascinating to see where he takes his live show next.

  • After concern through last week that Jamie might not be fit after cancelling a few gigs, finally got confirmation the gig was going ahead. Mighty relief.

4 albums in and quite frankly a treasure trove of material I wanted to hear it was with great anticipation when he took to the stage.

Starting with Power of Men and Tescoland the pace and passion of the night never let up. Tracks from all four albums fill the set list.

Highlights from the first album were Operation and If you've got the money. British Intelligence and the Man's Machine from Kings and Queens. Don't you find and The Prophet from Carry on the Grudge and Solomon Eagle and a tremendous solo performance of Sign of the Times.

The main set finished with Sheila, Tinfoil Boy, Rabbit Hole and Sticks n Stones who wouldn't be happy with that? Then of course he finished with Zombie.

Raw, Electric, passionate, epic. I could go on. Tremendous night from quite frankly one of the UKs singer songwriters. A must see if you love live music.

  • Jamie T's music means a lot to me as I began listening to it during one of the happiest times in my life.

So I'm biased. I thought I would never seen him live (because of his 5-year hiatus), so when the new album came out I was very excited.

And Jamie delivered. Very energic setlist, playing almost all of the classics. He left out Sheila but played Operation and Man's Machine which are two of my favourites. The show also included more slow-paced songs as Don't You Find and Emily's Heart.

All in all, one of the best shows of my life. I never write reviews so that's how good it was.

  • Awesome gig last night, Jamie apologised for being late as original date was canceled due to illness however last night more than made up for it! Jamie played a selection of tracks from his new album Trick but really got the crowd jumping and going mental with his former favourites, sticks and stones, sheila and zombie. This a man who can really perform live and you could see on his face he was buzzing off of the crowds reaction to his performance. A top gig by a top artist defo one to catch again.

  • Jamie T has been one of my "bucket list" artists I've been dying to see. This show absolutely blew my mind and was by far the best concert I have been too in my life. His performance was out of this world and I have never seen another artist who has such energy, passion, and stage presence as him. I had been watching his videos and listening to his music on YouTube since 2006 and too see him preform live was almost surreal. I cannot wait till he comes back to California, me and my brother will be waiting to go again!

  • What a delight it was to witness Jamie T at the Independent SF! Ever since his debut album Panic Prevention (one of my all time faves) I've been a fan and have enjoyed his subsequent albums ever since. This show is one I will treasure for many moons to come - especially because I got to meet Jamie after as well :D Would recommend to anyone to go see a show here - you can often meet the artist(s) afterwards as well as a massive bonus! Show highlights: Sheila, Zombie, If You Got The Money & So Lonely Was The Ballad.

  • One of the best concert I've ever seen (it's difficult to choose between this and Bruce Springsteen's one). The audience was wild, the music was alive during the show. The set list was great; in particular Operation and 368 were fantastic. I want to see him again, come hell or high water.

One of the few excellent members of contemporary rock.
